While I never understood what those JP test are, it's the game core what's matter. It would be years later when I learned about the international releases, being retitles as "Street of Rage" which imo not very impressive as opposed to Bare Knuckle which hits hard by the pronounce alone. Then there's those many cuts on those international releases. No wonder 3 was heavily panned out there, it would probably get way better reception if it stays like how the JP version does.

@@wutang5795 most games of this era had minor differences but they basically tried to ruin SOR3 in the west. Don’t listen to these other people, I’ve played both a lot. The hardest difficulty on the Japanese version is easier than easy mode in SOR3. You were supposed to be able to beat the game with one credit. Also if you don’t die then you’re supposed to build up a star meter that levels up your blitz attack. Blaze’s max level blitz attack is crazy. But SOR3 is so hard you’ll probably never even figure this out.

What I recall about this game was that most reviewers were furious over the censorship in the Western release. *Removing* the gay character was a major sticking point (showing how things have flipped in super dork culture) and there was a massive freakout over the music. It was a lot of things. the censorship, the unbalanced difficulty in the western versions, the broken audio in the PAL versions , the music.... there are lots of things to criticize. Honestly, the music issue is because Koshiro was trying to get sounds out of the Mega drive that it just wasn't capable of with the sound driver they were using. An example of how the genre he was trying to imitate could sound with the right sound driver is the Adventures of Batman and Robin. That game uses a custom sound driver and the music is very similar in genre to what Koshiro was going for in SOR3. With all that said, from personal experience with SO3/BK3, the music grows on you if you play it enough. There is no doubt that the soundtrack matches the chaotic and fast paced gameplay of the game. regarding difficulty, While the western versions were too hard, BKIII was too easy. Actually, the western versions could have been even worse as well. There is a prototype of the US version that is even harder than the final version!

SOR3, at the end of the Genesis era, needed to play it safe rather than be experimental. It needed to look, play and SOUND like a SOR game. Why it failed was because it didnt hit the mark on the third requirement...the sountrack is a major part of the experience. The difficulty I could have handled as long as I was rockin' to some killer tunes but since we weren't, the whole experience became unworthy of our time spent playing it. 🤷♂️

Bare Knuckle III introduced some quality of gameplay improvements, allowing most if not all playable characters to run, the ability to dash vertically, and changed the way special attacks work to reduce the amount of the life bar used if the player is patient enough. Though the music isn't as catchy as the first two entries. Streets of Rage III has a bugfix here or there when compared to Bare Knuckle III, but the irritating choices to change the characters' outfit colours, put the difficulty through the roof, remove one or more unlockable characters and butcher the story kill my enjoyment of the game. I'll live with the bugs in BKIII.

To better understand the pressure that was present on Ancient at the time in I993, Bare Knuckle III was in development at the same time as The Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis), this is ultimately the reason for why both games have Demo or Prototype Tracks that were not properly converted to their respective soundfonts that you can still listen to in the Sound Test and you truly have to commend Yuzo Koshiro and company for working Double Time and change to get both of these completed in a timely manner; as for the production handicaps of Bare Knuckle III, the axing of the extra content (Ash, as well as Round 02 and 07's Motorcycle segments, as well as Round 06's Underground area that was fortunately restored in as close to its original vision in Bare Knuckle III DX) may very well have been a mixture of Time Costs and Quality Control, and looking further at matters I think that I wouldn't be wrong today to say that is a convincing truth: ~ Even if it has never been explicitly stated by developers at Ancient and Sega Consumer Research and Development 03, Ash is most likely a direct reference to Glenn Hughes of The Village People, his Leatherman design was prominent in the I970s and he was still using it at this time before he left the band in I996; this being said though, Ash's gameplay is not properly polished, many of us wouldn't be able to truly witness his peak gameplay capabilities until Bare Knuckle Remake (Streets of Rage Remake) and that alone should be enough to tell us how much was left on the table because he clearly was not ready for American Primetime. Had he not been cut out in the Censored releases, I feel Ash would be more similar to his BK Remake counterpart, he is a very Technical character to master in III because of the precision that you need with every one of his actions and an optimal version of him would've made him far more than viable to be incorporated in the International builds that he would've become a fixture right away. ~ Round 02 and 07's Motorcycle segments presumably had to be axed due to the code for them not being optimized in time for launch, it is believable at this point that these would've been this game's equivalent to the Horse and Surfing segments in The Super Shinobi II (Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master) and if there are some overlaps in their handing then I wouldn't be surprised; we still need to get the Prototype ROMs that have these intact, there should be at least Two ROMs to look out for (the one with Round 02's segment should predate the one with Round 07's by a few months, given their dynamic differences in Menu Visuals) and we might need to get help from current and former members of the Gaming Press who covered Bare Knuckle III's development throughout Mid to Late I993 (if not Early Quarter 0I of I994). ~ Round 06's Underground segment getting shelved was probably also the end result of the area not being polished enough in time for launch, the area is still very rough in older builds of Bare Knuckle III DX (despite how much effort was put in to get it to work) and it truly shows how ambitious this area was originally supposed to be; no matter what, the Poison Gas would've still activated before Axel and company made it out of Mister X's building, the escape from the building is incredibly brutal and if you can manage to do this without losing a single stock then you will have truly mastered this game's handling and routing.

At least the Japanese version is the best game of the series. It's not even a competition. More engaging gameplay, better cut scenes between levels, better graphics, more variety and small details. I personally love the soundtrack, as enjoy eletronic music myself, but I think SoR3 would always suffer from the typical "collective-nostalgia-protection" phenomena. It happens pretty much with everything. After a super successful music album, or book, or videogame, the populace tends to be programmed to overly criticize and even dislike the sequel, due to that. Yes. People are mostly stupid lol.

SOR2 was more polished. SOR3 had more content but less polished and the music was way ahead of its time. Only now can you appreciate its style. I play both OSTs in my car :)

I'm so glad we had the bare knuckle import instead of streets of rage 3 growing up. It was class

SOR 3 is definately an aquired taste. Ultimately I really came to appreciate the US version after completing it. The ability to run and dodge up and down plus all the additional moves was aweome for mobility and crowd control, making it play the best out of any of the 3 entries. Its still not my favorite entry because its a little too drawn out overall. I think the core combat is the best it ever was, at that time, however. The music kind of grew on me too, though not near the extent of previous games, but it does fit the theme pretty well. The game has some nice looking areas, like the construction area with debris blowing around. Some nice atmosphere. Though the colors looked more dull then previous entries to me. My biggest issue wasnt the extra challenge, but how it was implemented. It feels like your fighting waves and waves of enemies for an especially long time before it lets you inch the screen. The bosses seem to have alot more health and fights can really drag on. A good example is the samurai bosses. Theres 3 of them and they have multiple health bars each. I feel like sections over stay consistantly. Since these bosses can only be hit at very specific openings, this can really be tedious. It was satisfying once I really mastered crowd control and that was definately my favorite aspect of the game, not so much the boss fights. There is a little too much of the same enemy types thrown at you in waves. Enemy types are mixed up but you spend ALOT of time fighting the same enemies before you can advance the screen. Prefer the pacing of the first 2 games. Some bosses really exploit the old Hit and Run or hide off screen tricks that never enhance these types of games for me. For anyone interested I went over the practice process and all the details of my playthrough in this tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZnRoYWoitypqcU I show all the 1 Up locations and go into detail about why I think Zan was a great character for a first time playthrough.

Is Ash in the Japanese version of BR3 on the Sega Collection for PS4? If so is it the same method to unlock ?

I'm sure no one will read my sor2 story... But growing up we couldn't afford game consoles. I was given a busted up Genesis by a neighbor. Sometimes the sound would go out and I'd play in silence for hours at a time. I saved up like 10 bucks and told my dad to take me to a game store called electronic boutique. This was when the PlayStation 2 was already out and they had a few in the back and I remember some guys playing Tekken tag. I was drawn in by the cover art of sor2 and I had enough with the 10 bucks I had to buy it. When I went to the register the employee laughed at me and said " you really wanna buy this" ... I remember feeling kinda embarrassed, but when I got home and finally got it to load on my busted Genesis I was hooked! And luckily the sound on my Genesis worked that night too 😂 best sound track ever!!!

It was my favorite Streets of Rage and I don't care why people think I'm not allowed to feel that way. I am surprised anything could be outrageous about it, though. Maybe now when everything is, but back then?

13:46 - Wrong! :) Mr. X is still alive and in perfect condition. You can actually see him from back view in the alternative ending after you fight at the city hall versus Shiva for the 2nd time in the game. Simply watch the scene at the 14:42 minute of this particular video. :)

I played SOR3 before 2 and even 1 as a kid, so my nostalgia for 2 isn't nearly as strong as those who grew up playing 2 before 3. Without SOR2 as a reference, I thought SOR3 was fine, certainly a quality beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis to put up against the poor SNES Final Fight port (including the "Blockbuster Video-exclusive" version Final Fight Guy that replaced Cody with Guy) or even either of its questionable SNES-only sequels, but for nostalgia reasons I wouldn't necessarily put it up against the SNES port of Capcom's Knights of the Round or even the Sega CD port of Final Fight. Once I got a hold of the SNES port of Konami's TMNT Turtles in Time back then, however, the convo immediately became "Streets of What?" "Who's Fight?"

To me, the gameplay was the bigger problem. The controls on SoR3 were a lot less tight. Skate got a giant nerf, Blaze and Axel became floaty to play. The gouge meter was way to punishing and only reliant on time to fill, wich made u never use your specials properly or without getting a massive health loss. Bear Knucle 3 seens better, but i dont think would be enought

One of my biggest problems was the repetition of the stage 1 theme i mean come on really thats what theyre gonna use for the bosses especially Shiva i would have preferred to hear his sor2 theme rather than the stage1 theme

17:20 - it could be argued it instead predicted Dubstep at least, AI frighteningly can actually make catchy melodies these days Also as for Ash, I vividly remember those days when having a homosexual character, or even mentioning the topic of homosexuality was taboo enough to raise the rating up for a strict R-rating, since it was so controversial of a topic to bring up where kids could see/hear... Even the introduction of Big Gay Al was in itself pushing the envelope for South Park showing a positive representation when American society treated them like the Boogeyman. Though Ash can still be seen and be playable in the Genesis Collection, even on the Switch when changing the games to be the Japanese version

SOR 3 was hard even in normal mode sucks that if you put the game on easy the game ends after stage 5 dont get me started on the jet pack boss and his rocket pack buddies who continue spawning until you beat the boss

Some of those tunes on SOR3 are headache inducing. This game needed more time to be refined and less meddling from Sega of America.

The music was an acquired taste, the colors on characters were borked and it has a lot missing compared to bare knuckle 3. As bad as the OST is beats 4 dubstep ear cancer.

SOR3 is my least favourite of the series due to the atrocious localisation of Bare Knuckle 3 with the ridiculous difficulty spike with the game being far harder than the first 2 games combined. I know many people give the soundtrack a lot of flack but I like the soundtrack even if it’s more experimental in its nature. Anyway great video as always Top Hat Gaming, i definitely enjoy your content.

The soundtrack really did hurt SoR3, only a few of the tracks were ok. Then Sega of America outright sabotaged it with censorship and ramped up difficulty.
