I purchased a red one with a 5 speed manual and the 16 aluminum rims brand new in 2011. Put a TRD short throw shifter just for a better feel and a aftermarket lite weight crank shift pulley. Made it accelerate a decent amount faster. I have 150,000 miles on it and just had my first ever repair I replaced my front calipers because one was dragging. I live in Minnesota with snow and road salt and have zero rust. I also have zero oil consumption. I change the oil every 5k and use full synthetic 0w20. The biggest problem with this car is I have owned it far to long and don't have a reason to replace it. My wife has gone through multiple expensive vehicles since I bought mine. I paid 18k out the door after tax and title. It is a quick little go cart im not sure why the one he tested was slow.

I picked one out for my sister in 2021 when she moved for college. We got a Purple 2010 Scion XD I found for sale online for sale by owner, had just under 120k miles and we paid $4600. It's not my cup of tea but it's been a good car for my sister. About a year prior I got a 2010 VW Jetta Sportwagon. Scion was better on gas but my VW still had a warranty. In summary TDI Volkswagens and Scions are both hidden gems

I'd hate to be that person, but there are some factual mistakes in this video. You mention that the HP is “abysmal” even in 2009, but this is a subcompact car and could be considered class leading in its category. It was faster than the base Corolla which came out at the same time. It is still faster than its modern replacement the Toyota C-HR. 2010 Scion: 128 HP (0-60 @ 8.3 sec) 2010 Kia Rio/Accent: 110HP (0-60 @ 10.3 sec) 2010 Yaris: 106HP (0-60 @ 10.3 sec) 2010 Honda Fit: 117hp (0-60 @ 8.3 sec) 2010 Versa: 107-122HP (0-60 @ 8.3 sec with 1.8l) 2010: Fiesta 118hp (0-60 @ 10.1 sec) Mazda2: 100hp: (0-60 @ 9.3 sec). It is also faster than some modern compacts: 2024 Elantra: (0-60 @ 9.3 sec). 2024 Corolla: (0-60 @ 8.8 sec). Also the oil consumption issues affected the 2.4 liter engines such as the Scion XB, and TC, along with the other Toyotas which had this engine. It isn’t a known issue for the XD, but of course engines can fail in all cars, the 1.8 is pretty reliable.

The 2zr thats in this and the 10th gen Corolla will burn oil after 140000 if you cheaped out on oil or were rocking the 10000 mile oil change intervals while doimg city driving. The valve seals are your usual culprit, but it will also suffer from the low tension oil control ring shenanigans as well. Im at 205k on my 2009, and its losing a little under a quart every 5000. Thats with a 45 minute commute every day (20 plus mile) one way. Thats with Synthetic its entire life. The 2zr is a peak "ok" engine, and does all its jobs very adequately.
@pishia1104
@pishia1104 6 ай бұрын
@@Badjujubee AFAIK, the 2009 Corolla does have an oil consumption issue, but this was due to the engine control module. Did you get the engine control module checked? Toyota issued a bulletin about this in late 2009. It is listed as Safety Recall - A0J. I don't recall issues with the engine itself, the 2.4 L had problems with the actual engine.

And this is why I'm on my second one. My best friend's family needed a car, so I sold them my old one, and I bought another. Both of mine have had the TRD suspension, tho I just upgraded to some Tein coilovers cuz y the hell not. My '12 would get 40-45 avg mpg on the highway, and I haven't really done any testing with my new one. For it's segment, it had the best power:weight. For a small people mover you couldn't ask for more.

I own a 2008 Scion Xd 5sp, and we bought it new. It only has 108k miles on it because I bought a new car 5 years ago, so this is our 3rd car (backup). Overall, it's been pretty good to us. Outside of usual maintenance (tires, brakes, etc), we had replaced the ignition coils and had some computer work done at the dealership. The interior has held up fairly well, and it does not rattle much. The seats are not very comfortable for more than a 2-3 hour drive. There is definitely an oil consumption issue, as it started burning a quart every 2k before it had 40k miles on the odometer. The dealership wanted to reseal something (can't remember what exactly), but I think it was an engine out job, and the quote was $3,500 for it. We passed and just add oil every 2k , and change it every 5k. We live in Portland, so the body held up quite well with no rust (West Coast car). As long as it continues to be reliable as a rarely driven 3rd car, we plan on keeping it around for a while. There are not a lot of new 4-door small hatchback manual transmission cars being produced anymore, and my wife and I like the compact utility of it.

I have 2008 automatic. Bought it used. Have no complaint. I don't understand why these car people always talk about "power." It's a little everyday car. You are not going to tow or race in it. It has plenty of power to go 80+ on freeway. Enough power to drive on a regular street and kill people. You can haul thing, drive people around, and do anything a regular cars do.

I bought it new in 2010. Here’s what you all should know. There’s a problem with the computer with how it controls the transmission in the automatic. Toyota won’t acknowledge it but once you know what not to do, you can get around the problem. Had the problem since it was new. The ac condensation line gets clogged every so often. Just unclog it yourself. The water pump died on me at 60k miles. The alternator died on me around 150k miles. Other than that, it’s been solid. Even the original battery lasted over 7 years.

I owned a 2009 5spd and don't understand your comments about power -- it had plenty of zip and pickup and merging was no issue. I got plenty of stops for speeding in it! One understated perk is this car's low center of gravity, making it excellent in snow (with snow tires).

Kind of an incomplete review. The rear seatbacks adjust for angle. The car is not slow. Motorweek did the 1/4 mile at 86.5 mph and 16.5 seconds. That is close to 80's muscle car times and speeds. DOHC engines are designed to be revved to accelerate and all you did was lug around in it. It has a close ratio 5 speed and not an overdrive 5th and that is why it revs so high at interstate speeds and gets lower mpg. You lelt out the neat storage compartments in the dash. Mine has the Toyota Racing Development rear sway bar and mine handles like a GO CART!

Speaking about power, it has plenty of power to scoot around town running errands. The only thing that I m not a fan of is the turning radius, I wish it was tighter. Besides that, the Scion XD is a great car to own!

I've had my 2011 XD 6 years and it has been very good to me. Long story short it's more fun to drive a slow car fast and I've loved this car. If you want all the details read the rest. Bought at 70k, currently nearing 110 and it's only been routine maintenance and a couple wear parts that weren't overly expensive or hard to get, I just use the nice synthetic oil and don't put off oil changes when the light goes. Most years my maintenance & repairs has been well under half the American average of ~$900, and only rarely neared or exceeded that number. Under powered is a fair statement and the mileage is just good not great especially for the 4 speed automatic, but the vehicle is very light and while it has no clutch it has spots on the shifter for all 3 of the lower gears, so you can use any individual gear effectively on more demanding roads. I've gotten it over the Appalachian mountains dozens of times, highways and backroads, by just driving smart and using the vehicle properly. I've done that trip with the car literally packed full while moving, surprising amount of space in there with seats that fold flat (probably more than most new pickup trucks). Handles good even in bad weather when it has to, if it bit twitchy and with an unreasonably large turning circle for such a small car. Handles even better now with slightly wider tires than OEM. I intend to do preventative work to keep this thing on the road now that I'm living where it snows more. Every mechanic I have ever taken it to says to keep it on the road, and as someone who wants cheap, reliable, point A to B transport without frills and with decent audio I can't do better.

Had a 2008 Xd. It went with the ex-wife. Was sorry to see the car go. Not the wife. She drove it way over 100K miles before buying a Highlander. I own a 2010 Xd. Went to Ft Worth to buy it. White with a stick perfect for AZ. It had just come off a lease & had 10K miles on it. Only has 60K+ miles now. Both Xds did well. Its no speed demon but with the 5 speed it does just fine (IMO). Driving cross country thru the midwest it cruised at 85 mph with the AC blasting to keep me comfortable in July. Without AC on it gets almost 34 mpg on the freeway. Have owned 5 Toyotas since 1983. Great cars. You think this is slow? My '83 4wd pickup was around a 100 HP with a 5 speed. It did everything I asked of it till 215K miles. Bought a '98 4Rnr because the 22r motor was just tired and did not pull the AZ hills on the I-state unless I downshifted to 3rd gear. Arigato!
