Toriel is a well loved character from UNDERTALE who, to most people, can seemingly do no wrong. She guides and protects the player throughout the first area of the game, but once we reach the end of the zone, she turns around, surprising us by attacking us. While she claims she wants us to prove that we're strong enough to survive, is there a darker, more sinister motive for her actions rooted in her tragic past? It's time to explore Toriel's disturbing backstory...

I never thought Toriel was keeping me prisoner. Was she obsessive and overprotective, maybe. One thing that I will say about Toriel is that I think she's reclusive from other monsters, and she certainly doesn't want to be found by Asgore. I think maybe she wants to ignore the war between monsters and humans and just live in her own little bubble where she can find and care for fallen humans that she can reflect the love of her lost children on. She admits that one reason she wants to keep you is because of her loneliness, but she's willing to put that aside when you want to leave. However, she's become so isolated and reclusive that she doesn't follow you - except in a Pacifist route - and she tells you to never come back, probably because you can't enter the ruins the same way you left them. However, she DOES make Sans promise that he will protect and watch over you, so yes, it's not as selfish as you're saying. I think she's just reclusive with other monsters.

Ever since my first playthrough I saw Toriel this way. She doesn't know you but starts to get possessive and oddly sweet. The moment she wouldn't let you leave I knew she didn't 'love' you because she's the greatest person ever. Still, even before I knew of her past with Asriel and Chara, I always took pity on her. She clearly only wants company and isn't spiteful.

The ways of the broken mind are many and unknown... Stockholm Syndrome is just the start, she could have actually went full-on insane and just rampaged, killing Asgore and other monsters who get in her way... in fact it wouldn't surprise me if there was a fanmade AU where this happens.

Hmm. While I find everything to be entertaining and somewhat educational, it's been explained in-game that the Ruins was the entrance, or palace, of the old Monster City of Home. The traps that were made were made by the plethora of monsters that resided there, as a first line of defense against humans that might follow the monsters underground, so that they might be slowed down, or even killed. Froggits and whimsuns now inhabit the ruins, but you must remember the ruins' name. THE RUINS. It's a ruin of a place that used to exist, now littered with leaves, cracks, plants, and a bunch of the monster equivalents of wildlife, including but not limited to froggits, whimsuns, and even some snails. The Ruins were once a capital called Home before the monsters moved farther in, establishing towns in Snowdin and Waterfall, and establishing a second permanent capital at New Home. Since the door to the ruins have been closed, no one has visited Old Home since at least Chara and Asriel died, since briefly after that, Toriel left and sealed the door behind her to never be found. But in conclusion, the traps were very likely NOT built by Toriel, or Froggits/Whimsuns either. but instead the whole of the Monster Race before moving further underground and abandoning their first city of Home.

Underlab is a great series, but Undertale's world is sometimes overthought, and some answers are simply placed in plain sight, and people examining the fourth wall and game's code sometimes forget that a lot of the history of the monsters can be found in simple lore splerges within books.

She's just as bad as Asgore, if not worse as she didn't do anything to improve the situation or even stop him, she just hid away and waited for it all to be over with the odd distraction of humans falling down and her attempts to keep them with her and a...limited amount of entertainment. | 3:15 - Kidnapping, as she tries to stop them from leaving. | 5:00 - It's later found that one is basically Asperger's Skeletor and mostly harmless, one is psychotic, yet doesn't have any personal reason (to her) to hunt down humans, the other has his hands tied and would rather not fight, if he had the option. | 7:00 - She's trapped by her own fear of leaving, what can you expect from someone who is more of a coward than that "whelp" she walked out on? She's also a hypocrite and irresponsible. Asgore may have some up with a bad plan, but it was the best that was available. Asgore sinned for selfless reasons, Toriel sinned for selfish reasons.

Toriel is selfish. She doesn't care about what Frisk thinks or want, she just does what she thinks is better for herself. She blames others for her problems. She hurts a child in order to others not hurt them, what's very hypocritical. She basically implies "I'll hurt you until you give up your own desires do as I say" and that's scary! She's not exactly sane. If her thoughts truly were about Frisk's wellbeing, she would walk them to the barrier herself. She doesn't, because she was only thinking about herself. Most of her character development in the game is about she understanding her flaws and trying to be better, even if she still has to work on a lot of things still, it's a start

Sometimes all it can take is one bad day to affect someone that badly and losing BOTH of her children certainly qualifies as a bad day (one by buttercut poisoning suicide and the other due to a lethal misunderstanding with humans) She was able to redeem that mistake in time in True Pacifist...somewhat, although she could've stopped the insanity sooner as Asgore lost all desire to fight, once she turned up.

Her husband got angry...so she left him? Wtf? He needed her! When she left, he basically lost all will to live. He actually went through with his plan, which I doubt he would have done if he had had her support. This is how I think too--she left, and he thought, well, I guess this is it then, and followed the plan. Imagine if, in a single day, you lost all of your children and your spouse. You would do some pretty stupid shit.

He wanted to die as penance for his sins, but he couldn't just do it himself as the other monsters would follow, he had to die in battle, where either he takes the last soul and shatters the barrier or he dies and his suffering ends. Toriel didn't take the moral high ground in running away, she was avoiding responsibility when she could've stopped him.

Well, they both made some bad decisions partly based of grief due to personal loss, it's true that she liked killing as much as Asgore did, otherwise she'd have no problem with carrying that her more efficient plan herself, but she unloaded the responsibility on him without thinking about how he feels about it, he knew how questionable his plan was, but he was forced to go through with it or let his people self-destruct due to despair and he was even comfortable with death as penance. (the Underfell version of him is fine with killing)

Isaiah Rivers Toriel would like to make peace but humans are humans. They might backstab the Monsters once they are freed from the Underground. Toriel is not insane! She is just crazy overprotective and scared because she knows what happens to the humans that *she* allowed to leave the ruins. *She* feels the guilt because she thinks it is her fault that those innocent humans were dying when, truthfully, it wasn't. At that point, she was willing to do anything to keep Frisk, or any other human, safe. Including not giving them the option to leave and preventing them from leaving at any cost.

I always thought that monsters had a different psychology, meaning they would behave differently from humans in various situations, like how the monsters didn't really hate humans for underground imprisonment. Another thing about Toriel not leaving the Ruins, I figured she had to stay there to protect any other humans that may have fallen down while the player was on their journey.

Underlab, i have 2 theories! 1: Toriel came around. She is aware of the fate of the other 6 hans who came to the underground, she is aware of what Asgore needs in order to shatter the barrier. Maybe after greiving the other 6 who died, maybe she snapped under all she had to concider (including Asirels death, leaving Asgore and being 'all alone') and decided to let it be what it shall be. When she leaves us alone in the ruins, maybe she wanted the monsters to do her dirty work, killing us so she could take the soul to Asgore to free monster kind. Let's face it, people who don't have any conversation with others and being alone with their thoughts do tend to become unreasonable and or don't think logically. She might not want to have the blood on her hands as she couldn't bare living with the fact she killed a child she cared for. Perhaps she never expected us to make it (hence why she was ringing us as we approached the house, he suprised sentence at the start must of been her thinking it was a minster who had arrived telling her we had died. 2: She left us in the ruins to test the kind of player we would become. Leaving us in the ruins alone to fight or give mercy to the monsters to see what our actions could come to. One time when she would of been talking to Sans, he might of told her of his 'timeline powers' and said the next human to fall down will have many different actions and consequences. Some which do not hard alot but some, some which will set them free and some which leads to a genocidal ruin. Maybe she wanted to see what kind of person we would become and whether or not we will be good, bad or neutral, which explains why Sans judges us for ALL the choices we make in every playthrough. Toriel must want to see whether her trust with the human is good and if she is doing the right thing, keeping us there but for the monsters sake. We never really know any other things those 2 talked about, Sans must trust Toriel as much as she does him if she wanted him to promise not to hurt anyone who comes through. (On some timelines, she might of already been told of our actions so she never made the promise with Sans on some of them.) Well those are my two theories, let me know what you think and if you choose to look into one or both of them, that would be epic, thanks again for your time reading these. :)

Though I agree with pretty much everything here, I think a good reason why she only shows up during the true pacifist ending to protect you from Asgore is probably because of; 1. Her personal connection to him and her personal hatred towards him. Of all monsters I feel like she'd have the most motivation to personally walk up to him and bitch him out when it came down to such a dangerous climax. (Though I can't explain why she doesn't show up on the neutral pacifist ending) 2. News of a human making it all the way to Asgore would probably spread through the underground the most. If anything, sans probably notified her of the event only then because he seems to believe the human can handle themselves perfectly good without any help (from his conversation at the hotel). This is also convenient timing since it'd be the last chance she could see the human before it crossed the barrier forever. 3. Combining 1 and 2, did any of the other fallen humans make it to Asgore? The line "Asgore will kill you" could just mean "the law Asgore created will kill you", as well as some mentions about 'capturing' the human and bringing them to Asgore. That's possibly why she didn't defend those humans after they left, and why she couldn't help them until it was too late since the news probably wouldn't spread until they were already dead. It's flimsy but all I got. I really wish I knew more details about her relationships with previous humans besides Chara. I still think she should have journeyed out with the human from the get go anyway. It also ticks me off to no end that she doesn't answer the phone throughout the entire game after you leave her, no matter the situation. I don't get that at all. On my 2nd playthrough I pieced together the theory that she had psychological problems as well about wanting to replace her kid, and I don't think that ruins the good image she has necessarily. I feel just bad for her, and it makes it all the more heartwreching we have to leave her behind.

I spent a lot of time thinking about what might have happened if Asgore never declared war after Asreil died (worst case scenario) first of all General hopelessness leads to lawlessness and looting and once human 1 falls and makes their way out of the ruins only to be attacked and killed by a decently powerful monster who then steals their soul and crosses the barrier and then proceeds to take even more souls from the nearby town not stopping at 7 which at that point they can just steal all souls in the surrounding area and as their power grows so powerful they take the souls of every human then possibly even every monster and no amount of determination is going to fix that

Hey, I wanted to note something related to the acronyms episode from a bit ago. I think ATK may stand for "ability to kill" because A: the more attack you have, the easier it is to kill monsters. And B: it's *ability* to kill, as you can gain ATK without gaining EXP or LV (equipment), so it's not automatically evil.

Notice how when he becomes Asriel in the final battle, he has completly different motivations? He wants to reset the world so he can bring back Chara and do everything again, most probably to avoid their deaths.

Actually, the validity of the theory behind Stockholm Syndrome has come into question recently, and there are some psychologists who don't believe it exists. Whether it exists or not, though, it is interesting to think about Toriel seemingly trying to induce dependency on her to keep Frisk with her. But Frisk will continue to grow, certainly, and I'm not sure how Toriel expected to keep 40 year old Frisk (or even 20 year old Frisk) in the ruins. Wouldn't she just be making us even more dangerous to other monsters if we ever decided we had enough and wanted to leave? I'm not sure if being bigger and stronger physically has anything to do with fighting monsters, or if our strength would rely entirely upon our equipment, but assuming things work like they do in real life, adult Frisk, just by the nature of being a more coordinated and bigger adult would likely be stronger. Even if she destroyed the door, couldn't Frisk just dig through the rubble and leave? It would definitely be harder for a child, but for a determined adult, I doubt anything would stand in Frisk's way. I personally think Toriel was really just trying to protect Frisk, though you can't deny that she was at least a bit selfish. I can understand her refusing to leave with us. Maybe the thought of seeing all her former subjects distresses her. Surely, since she has ways of getting food like cinnamon in the ruins (in grocery bags no less) she has some people she's comfortable seeing, so I don't think she's entirely isolated. But it could be that she's just foraging and has old reusable bags. But supposing that she really is that isolated and truly doesn't want to leave the ruins, I might understand her not wishing to go with you to protect you when you leave. And while I do understand her desire to not talk to you on the phone after you leave, that's also pretty selfish. (She must also have extreme willpower to not even pick up out of curiosity. Especially since she seems to let it ring out.) I mean... if I let a child wander out into danger, I probably would be equally compelled to pick up and not pick up. On the one hand, if I really cared about the kid, it would bring me so much relief hearing every time that the kid was alright. On the other hand I would be dreading someone else on the other end as confirmation that the worst has happened. I suppose Toriel just didn't want to be too attached since it would just hurt more if what she expected (Frisk getting killed) eventually happened. But at the same time it's pretty selfish for a grown woman to go "I care about you, but I'm also not going to help or support you at all if you leave me." I really don't know what to think of her, but I still love her. She may be very motherly, but just because she isn't perfect doesn't mean she's any less of a good goat mama. Also, about the bonus fact about snails - yes they are gastropods, just like clams. Which begs the question. American people will eat clams and scallops and other gastropods from the sea fairly willingly (some, like oysters, are eaten raw) but if you asked some Americans (or even any other group unaccustomed to snails) to eat a snail, even one sauteed in garlic and butter, most would turn up their nose. I think that's funny. A snail is nothing but a mobile land clam. Clams and snails are basically the same and it's silly to me that people will eat clams but not snails. Maybe people just have this sense that snails are dirty bugs while shellfish are just... well... shellfish. Whatever the reason, I think it's fun to point out that snails are just as edible as clams and more people should give them a chance! Though I dunno about snail pie. Unless Goat Mom sautees them in garlic butter, I don't think the snail filling would be anything too delicious. Mostly just chewy and bland.
