I know you have touched on hedgehog health but can you do a whole video on hedgehog heath and what to look out for if they are getting sick. And maybe different treats to give them. What kind of bugs I should be feeding her. I want to give my hedgehog the best quality life but with all the websites telling me different things it's hard to figure out who is telling the truth. If you should feed vegetables and what kinds? Are there any vitamins and what kind. Just things like that would be helpful to know. Because there are alot of different clashing information. I'm also jealous of the people with cheap vets. My vet visit was 300$ and she only had an eye infection. Thank you for your videos your a big help : D

1. I’ve had SO MANY PEOPLE TELL ME THEY DONT EXIST. And I’m like no. They do. They are “pests” in South Africa. 2. They’re naturally defensive because they are prey animals, and they come around eventually (usually). Their emotions shouldn’t be anthropomorphized 3. They’re pigs lol. I always tell people that they POOP SOOOOOOOOO MUCH lol. 4. Like you said, initial cost is pretty nice and easy, but their health is so iffy that a vet fund is SOOOO important. 5. That’s so weird. I am always told “we have to get rid of it because I’m allergic to it” and that’s actually how I got Eleven. 6. These suckers are sooo sensitive to temperatures both ways. I unfortunately know this too well, as you know 😰 7. I always say, “if you don’t like bugs, don’t get a hedgehog. Do not deprive them of a necessary piece of their diet.” 8. NOOOOO. It’s basically like McDonald’s for them. Don’t buy it. Pet stores will try to get you to buy the hedgehog food 😑 But if you look at those ingredients, they are awful. 9. I have hedgehogs that have been around other hedgehogs (all female) their entire lives. But I never recommend it because it’s so risky in other situations. 10. This always ticks me off... hedgehogs have feelings too. They feel pain... this actually makes me sick. “They’re not enough of a pet” is something I’ve been told by my own boss. Yes. When Fox and Wonder attempted hibernation last year, he actually said that. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO (and literally all of yours).

#8 Vets are not nutritionist. They aren't required to have a nutrition classes in order to have a vet license.

THANK YOU for speaking about hedgehogs needing insects in their diet. I used to feed my hedgehog ground chiken (or very low-fat ground beef occasionally for the sake of variety) and a large variety of insects + small amounts of high quality cat food mostly to keep her teeth healthy. I've sometimes seen ppl who assume hedgehogs shouldn't be fed lots of insects because they contain fat, and then it turns out they think insects means just mealworms (which do have lots of fat in them). I fed my hedgehog mainly crickets, cockroaches (dubia and red runners) and mealworm beetles, snails, earthworms (snails&earthworms are super healthy but probably the hardest to introduce to hedgies in my experience) as well as mealworms and superworms. And if anyone has trouble getting their hedgehogs to eat insects, they should still be persistently offered and you can even offer less catfood or whatever else their current diet is. A hedgehog won't starve itself on purpose, and if it is there's something else wrong with the hedgie. But if you keep offering insects and offer less of other foods, they will eventually eat the insects. But yeah, 100% agree with you. Just because an animal can survive on a one-sided diet doesn't mean it necessarily should. Humans are omnivores but we benefit from eating a variety of different things (be it vegan or not). :)

All pets deserve vet care if they need it. That's insane to me. Like "you're very small so you don't deserve medical care." Imagine saying that to a child, someone who has some kind of dwarfism, or someone who is just very much shorter/smaller than the average person. What the heck does size have to do with anything !?! For the last one, I had a budgie when I was little and my parents thought she got sick but they said that small animals dont need vets... she died so i agree with the vet care speech. I would like a hedgehog but i know i wouldn't be able to give it the care it needs as a teen because if it gets sick its expensive so i refuse to get one and believe it can have a better life and i dont want it to suffer. Pets are like babies ❤

My parents taught me a valuable lesson when I had a guinea pig that needed surgery when I was in middle school. My dad let me "choose" but sat me down and said its a lot of money. But when you take on a pet you take on all of their needs. The Guinea pig had surgery and I learned a great lesson. I now have a large very fund for my 8 babies!

This is so cute. We have kind of pet hedgehogs. They live in the wild and we just feed them and provide water over the summer. Living in the southern hemisphere the cuties are going into hibernation so no little critters running around at the moment.

Ps. We feed them everything from cat jelly meat too cat biscuits, milk and cream(don't judge the milk and cream, these guys are all healthy). We have a few different bowls as we find some like certain cat meats more. One even goes and eats the dog biscuits. I even flea them and keep an eye out for any form of mange and have a little hut for them to treat and put them back into the wild after.

my mom's friend is trained specifically for exotic pets so if I get my hedgehog she said she will do checkups for him for free because she is by our house a lot, and the only thing I would have to pay for would be treatments (like medication, etc) for veterinary things. I feel really lucky to have her as a family friend and that she offered to do this for me

I loved this video ! Concise , to the point and so much info included. Well done. My hedgie hated hedgehog food, wouldn't touch it so I didn't give it to him. He loved chicken and mealworms and ate cat food and remained healthy. One thing I would like to say is always take your hedgehog to an EXOTIC vet, they know what to look for. My hedgie got a hair of mine wrapped round his leg. It got tighter and I'm blond so didn't notice it till he was in pain. I told the vet this and they checked under anasthetic and said it wasn't and wanted to chop his leg off as it had gone a purple colour. I wasn't convinced. I knew hedgie would give up on life if they did this as he was slightly overweight so I went to an exotic vet who found the hair and viola hedgie was ok straight away running round the same day. I was so happy. p.s. he was so grumpy I loved him for it, but we had a bond and he trusted me no matter what that I would care for him.

I have a vet for my lizard and I really want a hedgehog but I can’t have one right now due to all the other pets I own like dogs and cats and the lizard so I don’t have enough time for one but I will get one when i have enough time and room i will get myself a hedgehog So I know that all animals need vets including reptiles and hamsters and any pet really so I love the hole vet speech in the video. Please keep educating people about hedgehogs.

African Pygmy hedgehogs also exist in New Zealand and were brought there by Europeans in the 1800’s for some reason, and now they are considered a pest- so they don’t only live in the wild in Africa

Hi! I was wondering what everyone’s take on “travel” cages would be? I have just purchased a cage for my hedgie to live in (once I go to pick him up) that is 30”x16”x18.” This would be the primary home for him, but as I’m a college student, I was wondering if getting a slightly smaller cage that would be a little easier to fit into my car when I am traveling the 4 hours home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. would be okay? He would only be living in this smaller cage for short amounts of time, but I wanted to check and make sure that this would not be harmful at all before seriously considering it! TIA!

I know you’ve gone over this but I’m still hesitant on the whole hives you can get and other sicknesses, like is it if the quill poke you or if you don’t wash your hands? You usually can't buy live mealworms online unless its from a breeder. They have to be live or canned. If they are freeze dried or come in a bag, then they aren't healthy. Its like if i gave you a strawberry poptart instead of an actual strawberry

I have high protein cat food for my Hedgehog but I also have a high protein insect formula some things in it are fish meal, chitin powder, tuna meal, crab meal, freeze dried mealworms, and yeast culture. Are these things bad for my hedgehog? Please answer I don’t want to fed her something bad for her :(

Mazuri is a really good hedgehog food, with cat food you need to be aware of the ingredients and quality, not just cat food. Remember that hedgehog are naturally susceptible to obesity, so they need a high-fiber food.

My mom said we will never take the hedgehog to the vet. She said that our cats don’t need a vet why should the hedgehog. We got the hedgehog and we got him from a breeder ( not a pet store or a back yard breeder) and I figured out he had mites. He was only a baby. We went to the vet the next day 😏😄

Makenzie Carman well it depends where you live I live in Seattle and would definitely recommend bumblebeehedgies that where I got my little hedge from but you can also just search hedgehog breeders near me and make sure that they are licensed breeders so you’re not supporting any backyard breeding

What do you do when your hedgehog absolutely refuses to cooperate with the vet? I took my hedgehog for a checkup and she balled up so hard she was harming the vet and assistant and after a while he just gave up. He was trying to check her mouth and she was not having it. I didn't know what to do in that situation. Luckily she seems to be completely healthy and I haven't had any medical issues for the year I have had her.

A bowl of water usually works - otherwise hedgehogs typically need light sedation if they can’t be seen other ways.
