I am in a relationship(10 months) but I am 16 years old. My mom has been divorced 3 times and my dad has been divorced 3 times. I thrive to have a really good marriage and my boyfriend thrives to have a good marriage. His mom and dad are divorced as well and it makes us nervous and thrive to have a really good marriage. Two pieces of advice: 1) God can heal anything and break any cycle - ask yourselves what are the qualities you’d want in a spouse, and what are the qualities that God wants in your spouse. And ask yourself if you’re able to be that same kind of spouse (the one God wants). 2) and yes you ARE young - But high school sweethearts are a thing sometimes, so ask yourself those big questions even at your young age. Don’t let your age prevent you from being obedient to Gods plan, only He gets to tell you who you are and what his plan for your life is… and it may include your boyfriend… it may not. Pray!!! Trust His word and his timing.

I get that you marry someone not for what you can get from them, but for what you can give to them. But what about children? Shouldn't you marry someone who has the same desire to have children or not? I mean if someone says they love you but they would not marry you if you're not on the same page as them regarding wanting children... wouldn't that be selfish? That's not unconditional love, is it?

Well I mean we think those conversations should happen well before marriage as you discuss your desires for a family. You see having children and building a family isn't a selfish thing because you do it together. If you are dating someone who does not have a desire for children and you do, then maybe that is not a good fit. That is not the same as marrying someone for their looks, money, or cool personality. Those things are only contingent on them. Having children is a team effort and both have to desire it and work on it together. Because if we were to apply the logic of "wouldn't that be selfish" then you should just go marry the next person you see because it's selfish to say no to anyone. But that's not right. One of our last tips is talking about how yes, you marry someone for how you want to serve them, but it should also be a good decision. aka. Having those healthy conversations about if you want children or not. I mean why would you not marry someone who also wants to raise a family. It's not healthy to either person to marry someone who has a completely different world view. And that isn't selfish. That is expressing your desires and you are both allowed to have your separate visions but that doesn't meant you need to marry each other if you want completely different things out of life. I hope I'm doin an okay job explaining, but that is a great question

Not only do we have to heal, we have to be strengthened. Kind of like any surgery on an ACL. You get the problem fixed and you heal, but you also go through rehab to strengthen that ligament/tendon again.

I got to meet Dave and Ashley in February when they spoke at Church of the Highlands' annual marriage conference. I'm single and have been soaking up all the things on relationships during the past 4 yrs of being single (actually how I came across your channel back in 2019).
