For just honing the cylinder a torque plate isn't necessary, though, if you have it, use it. A torque plate is a must when you resize the cylinder though.

Great experiment for sure. It was worth the time and effort to see if there was a difference. I didn’t think there would be a difference, but was on the fence due to how the VW cylinders clamp between the head and the case. Now, on a typical small block or big block engine, the distortion is different due to the head studs are stretching holding the engine block and heads together. I’ve seen a difference between using a torque plate and not using one but again we’re working on VW’s and not V8’s.

It made me curious seeing builders like ACE using them... they do work great at a cylinder fixture to hold them when I honed.

The difference between the experiment here and what you see in most V-8 applications is here only honing was done. If a resizing(cutting) of the bore had been done, as is done on V-8's when TPs are used and significant changes are seen..that would have been an interesting experiment.

Dial calipers are not an accurate measuring tool, they are good for quick reference. Micrometers are what you need, best to buy every size up to 4”, you will need all of those for engine building. Also bore gauges read in 5 tenths two ticks equals .001. Try to just move it slowly until you get the highest reading and that is your number.

if you ever get bored ,,lol, measure a jug in the torque plates then heat them to 160/200 deg and measure for distortion,,,,,,thanks

Only case ( aluminum ) to use for turbo engines. Less flex in the mains.

Nice info Jason. But I need to ask you. Why are you using a copper gasket on the head? From all my info given to me from builders, are that they just seat the barrels as usual with valve compound into the head. I have ran 26 pound boost on a cool day. No leaks.

To be honest I'm still a turbo novice so I'm learning and going with what the top dogs recommended. I'm actually going to be coating the copper gaskets in Yamabond this time, but I haven't had any leaks from that area so far.

Nice bro Comming along nicely Hey Jason can i ask a stupid Question ,Im Putting stock Barrels and pistons in bess , I don't Have too Worry about Deck height do I , Should be the same compression Ratio as stock There AA stockies , Should be the same as the Maile ones that were on there shoudn"t they ?

Hey Brian, happy Friday man! To be honest you should always check the deck height and cc your combustion chambers. The piece of mind alone knowing your compression ratio is worth it.

My thoughts are at 28 ft lbs what are plates gonna do? It’s not like the cylinders are made of rubber and are gonna flex At All🤷🏻‍♂️

Still a bit of torque, true its not much, but it's still kinda cool to check. I'm going to check the old cylinders as well. May help in finding issues with those.

2 tenths of a thousand out in a barrel will hurt the sealing capacity of the rings ( ring bounce) , if turning 9 thou RPM in all the gears. Thus a reduction in HP. For street eating Cobra's and Hellcats, weight per HP rules.

Some applications such as supercharged, turbo, nitrous and endurance applications may require .001"-. 003" to be added to the minimum clearances in Table 1. Cold water pickup marine applications may require an additional .002"-.004" clearance. Table 1 Bore Range Min. Clearance Sport Compact 2.500 to 3.625" .0030 to .0035" Sport Compact 3.626 to 3.999" .0035 to .0040" SB Applications 4.000 to 4.200" .0035 to .0045" BB Applications 4.200 to 4.600" .0040 to .0050"
