Everyone was totally shocked when the captain of the Edwin H. Gott came over the radio and said the ship is heading to Duluth! Many people down next to the Aerial Lift Bridge were excited and talking about the Gott's arrival because this ship rarely comes into Duluth.

Hi Mike. I got to give you a high five for your persistence and enthusiasm to capture each Great Lake boat that enters the Duluth harbor. I also enjoy your color analysis of what makes that each boat unique. I'm looking forward to your reporting of the Amercian Spirit when she starts her season shortly. On a side note. I had to travel to Detroit via Toledo a couple a days ago. I saw the Gott's sister ship the Edgar Speer parked at her winter mooring. I was about 1 mile from the boat but the tremendous size of the vessel took my breath away as I drove by the Maumee River Harbor. Also, I see both the Speer and the Clarke AIS are up and running. Hopefully we will see both boats visiting Duluth area soon.

It's incredible to think these 1000 foot vessels are 2/3rds the length of the largest vessel ever built - Seawise Giant that makes them impressive when put into the context of the locks they have to traverse. Great shots as ever.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Hey hypergolic, you really put me onto something. I didn’t even know many facts about the larger ship ever, not sure why I didn’t research that before? 1,500 feet and sadly it was scrapped. I want to thank you for mentioning this! Anyone that wants to check the largest ship ever out, here it is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seawise_Giant

@@vibewithmike And this got ME onto something... I wondered how the cruise ships compare in size, they always look so huge. What I found is that the average length of a cruise ship is...1,000 feet!
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
That is crazy! They almost all look like they’re 1500 feet long but maybe it’s just an illusion because of how tall they are?
@Jodi_W
@Jodi_W Жыл бұрын
@@vibewithmike A little more research tells me the largest cruise ship is Wonder of the Seas. It's 1,188 feet long and can carry up to 9,288 people including guests and crew. Next year a new ship will be launched that is bigger - 1,198 feet and nearly 10,000 person capacity. I've never been up close to a cruise ship but I think it is the height that makes them look so much bigger. Cruising is not something I ever plan on doing...I can barely handle a tour cruise on a lake. 🙄 And speaking of cruising phobias...the Wonder of the Seas is 5 times bigger than the Titanic. And hopefully at least 5 times safer!

I assume there are some tugs to assist the actual docking? That would be great to see. I'm an ex USS Enterprise nuc reactor operator , so I always enjoy seeing big 'boats'. Gonna have to look up the Edwin H. Gott to see if there is any info on the engine rooms and propulsion. I would think these days they have thrusters as well ... so perhaps don't require as much help from tugs.

Oh, I have so much to say on this one! Buckle in! First off, I was so confused by you saying this was a rare sighting because I was thinking, "We've seen this ship before..." Then I realized that I recognized it because it's the ship we watched go through the Soo Locks 8 years ago! How crazy is that?!? And I went back to look at my pictures to make sure I wasn't dreaming things (that's a long time for me to remember a detail like that) and realized that the other ship we saw there was the Mesabi Miner. Life is funny sometimes! Secondly, the weather in Duluth today. Wow. There is no walkway, it's ALL lake. There are waves on the walkway. And I just saw ice chunks floating down the walkway. 🤦‍♀ Also, for some reason the green gate is open. We think it happened in the last half hour. Of all the times, I'm not sure this is when that should be. It was closed earlier. I'm not sure if somebody opened it or if it blew open or something. And that may be how the ice chunks got on the walkway...maybe they came from the remaining bit near the lighthouse. We rewound the video and a big wave knocked it open about 20 minutes ago! I can't believe I noticed it. Another signal from....whoever?!? Anyway, I'm pretty sure they don't want it open but I'm also pretty sure nobody can get to it right now unless they are a strong swimmer. More snow chunks coming from behind the gate now. We're also seeing a lot of people find out the hard way that the waves are coming over the 2nd wall, too. Lots of jumping and running when they get hit by a wave that makes it to the upper level. It's an entertaining time to watch, that's for sure.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
That green gate breaking open is going to be a big story. I rewound as well and saw it open up. I was expecting an even larger wave but I guess it must’ve been just repeated banging from waves? I have to get to the Soo Locks someday, Jodi I’ve never been there. I thoroughly enjoyed everything you wrote. So awesome! I hope this weather means there will be a big group of ships coming in all weekend. It’ll make for some good videos.⛴️⛴️⛴️

I've seen some big ships on Puget Sound, but not that big. It's design seems unique to its mission, hauling iron ore and coal. We don't have those kind of industries, so we've got different kinds of ships. Mostly cargo ships, and most of them from East Asia. Of course running through my mind while watching was "With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more / Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty."

Lucha! I hope all is well my friend. When I think Puget Sound, it immediately makes me think of my times in Seattle. One of my favorite spots is the West Point Light (provided a link below for you and others to check out). I was at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond a few years back, and that area is nice as well. Traffic was pretty crazy, that surprised me. It’s really nice area out there if a person likes the outdoors. Thank you so much for the comment. I hope you come back for more ship videos and more comments. It’s always fun talking to nice people like you. West Point Light: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Point_Light

I know nothing when it comes to these big ships but isnt it common in a harbor for a ship this size to be guided around by a tug boat and/or a harbor master?

Great question! First of all, thank you for watching my friend. You are correct, many of the large vessels need help from the tugboats. Is it the captain driving this ship, or do they have pilots in Duluth harbor? Most larger ocean going ships have pilots navigating into and out of ports in ocean ports. The ports and harbors are far too complex with shallow areas, tides, and other underwater stuff for a captain to navigate. In Rotterdam, Holland the huge ships have to wait for high tide. Because some have a draft of over 75 feet. Bulk ocean going carriers are about 1,200 ft long, 210 ft wide at over 30,000 hp and able to carry over 360,000 tons with a propeller about 30 diameter. These ocean going ships move huge amounts of iron ore from Brazil, Europe and from Western Australia to Chins and India.

@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Debbie, the captain passed on the whistle/horn in this video. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

Question from Scotland and I hope it's not a stupid one, but why do many of the Great Lakes ships have such rounded fronts to them.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Nigel! Big wave to you in Scotland friend! The bows are shaped like that because the ship is initially built to fit into the locks so there’s a more squared off shape. This allows for maximum cargo capacity if they build a ship that fits perfectly to a rectangular shaped lock. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward.
