One of the reason for the "anime/manga " style of the TV show, is that it was french-canadian made, and anime had been popular in france since at least the 80's. So a lot of french authors, producers and cartoonist drew influence from the manga genre. Another exemple of that would be Wakfu or oban star racer
@EveRosell
@EveRosell 4 жыл бұрын
Oban Star Racer was made in close collaboration with the japanese animation studio though. Another good example would be Princess Sissi about Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

totally spies was the first of those, in 2001. i remember french having an impactful history of making its own animation and cartoon characters in the eu. a lot of comic stuff was from france in finnish library as a kid. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_French_animated_television_series en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_French_animation even back from 70s sometimes faintly on certain animations you can see the influence from japan. they did sometimes co-productions with japan even back then.

@@flightlesschicken7769 I dunno, I liked Crusher's personality better. There was just something about Pulaski I didn't like. And Crusher had excellent character development. I mean, can you see Pulaski sexing up her grandmother's ghost boyfriend? No, didn't think so. Ok, maybe I just liked Crusher because the captain was into her. But seriously, the episode where Crusher's son accidentally traps her in another dimension was good. There's a lot of moments we wouldn't have gotten if she hadn't come back.

Surprisingly, not that much of that in this movie. To the movie's/show's defense, you don't pick up on stuff like that as a kid, only MUCH later into teenagehood. I know because me as my watched this show A LOT for many years and many many reruns ever since we were children. And heck, maybe it wasn't even the show's creators intention (though probably unlikely) to give it that fetish vibe, but when you constantly have to come up with dozens upon dozens of unique parodies to James Bond like capture devices, while also giving them a Beverly Hills spin to it, eventually that's just gonna look like.

"Actually, the aliens are down in the freezer." What I expected to follow that quote: A laugh track. What actually followed that quote: Showing the aforementioned aliens. Consider my expectations subverted. Edit: Actually, no, THIS is the exchange that should've been followed by a laugh track: "You'll have us eliminated?" "Of course not! We stopped doing that in the '90s!" Seriously, the way that character's voice actor read that line made it clear that he was having WAY too much fun with this script.

I'm pretty sure anyone from Europe will be able to take one look at this show and go "yup, that's early 2000s French Television alright". French Animation just has this look to it, even if the actual art style is entirely different (like Code Lyoko). Once you recognise the writing and movement styles of French animation, coupled with their Japanese influences, you can recognise it a mile away. Oban Star Racers is another example of a French show.

@- The Chain TV - I loved that opening song from Code Lyoko and the CGI bits. A few years ago, I actually watched all 98 or so episodes. It's...very formulaic but very slowly, a full story is given and character development happens. Jeremy's voice actor also changed by about season three and I remember disliking the new one. Also, anytime Aelita had to press the button to end the Xana attacks, they showed the exact same animation, never any variation...for about 50 episodes. Still, loved Code Lyoko more than Totally Spies.
