Reviewing every Andrew Garfield spider-man movie has been something I've wanted to do for years. I haven't seen anything from them since they came out in theatres and in the case of this Andrew Garfield franchise.... I haven't seen them in as much as 10 years.
Join me on this Spidey-cember as I Totally Not Mark embark on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Reviewing and reconnecting with the films that sculpted my childhood and young adult life. This week we are tackling Mark Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 from 2012 and 2014. Do I still not like them? Will they surprise me? Let's see!

Thank you for clarifying that he's a good Peter Parker. As a comic fan, it frustrates me so much that the most comic accurate portrayal of Peter is so hated. I love Garfield's performance in these films, in and out of the mask.
@Mellow_Yellow13
@Mellow_Yellow13 2 жыл бұрын
I was also shocked how hated his performance was. I'm the rare person who grew up with the Maguire trilogy but still strongly preferred the TASM duology. Maguire's performance as Spider-Man being a large factor in that. The OG trilogy were good movies but were very underwhelming Spider-Man movies to me. Shows/movies don't need to do a 1-for-1 adaptation of the source material but the Maguire trilogy pushed that way too far for me.
@trevinodude
@trevinodude 2 жыл бұрын
I think that even in modern comics (or at least comics that take place before One More Day) Peter largely changed and matured as a character past what he was in the Lee and Ditko era, that the Maguire films came out at a time where Peter in the comics was like he was in the movie…. And people didn’t really realize he had to grow into that kind of person. TASM is more accurate to early Spider-Man, which sadly was forgotten due to the sheer popularity of the Raimi films. Now, for the sake of honesty, I also prefer the Sam Raimi take like so many others, but I understood what Marc Webb was going for. I, ultimately, think it was the little things (like Peter skateboarding for some reason) that turned audiences against Garfield’s Peter since comic Peter wasn’t ‘cool’ enough to do something like that in high school either… at least that’s my theory. Anyway, Garfield’s Peter didn’t deserve the hate he got.

I liked that Andrew didn’t do multiple accents. That always bugged me in the Amazing movies. Webb also used a sorta muffled mask direction that made it hard to hear in lower level theaters with people laughing. Which was a negative experience i had because i didn’t want to watch the movies in 3D in the IMAX because I have really bad vision and glasses on thick glasses is always uncomfortable.

28:00 However, even when I divorce nostalgia from Lizard’s design, I can STILL say the lab coat is an excellent choice and oddly missing because the lab coat is part of what represents that Lizard is (or at least was) human. Ironically I think it’d fit perfectly with this incarnation of Conners, so it’s a real shame they got rid of it.

I honestly fell instantly in love with Andrew's Spidey the moment I saw him do that stint at Comic-con after they announced his movie. I could see the passion for the character, that he understood, and instantly became more invested on his take than I'd ever been with Tobey's (as great and groundbreaking as those films were) But then came the comments, and the critics and all the shit thrown at his film and I just... never watched it. I kept that enthusiasm I felt at first buried deep, and went on pretending those films didn't exist because I think I was worried to taint that memory with the experience of a bad film. That changed, of course, literally 1 hour after seeing NWH. I came home and immediately put on TASM. And then TASM2. And then the next day NWH again. I can now honestly say Andrew is my favorite Spider-Man. as I always instinctively knew he would be. Also, I don't know whose choice it was to make Peter a skater, but considering that Andrew is on record saying that he was at one of the darkest points of his life, at his most isolated and troubled, when he picked up skating, I wouldn't be surprised if it had been his choice to round up his version of the outsider type he needed to be. I will die on the hill of his Peter being great.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that Gwen and Peter are the core/heart of the Garfield films. The dynamic between those two and the weight their relationship has in the narrative, especially in the second film, is why I love that series of films; why I love 2 in particular, despite it's other narrative flaws.

i really like that car scene with the child, when he tells him to put the mask on and climb, it powerfully represents what we all love about spider-man: relatability. stan lee and steve ditko gave him a full mask so anyone could be spider-man, they could have struggles in their normal day to day life, but once the mask is on they have no fear or issue to do what’s right.

Andrew wasn’t an angry nerd who learned a lesson. Still whined about his situation in thought bubbles and then did the right thing anyway. That is 60s Peter Parker. I have no clue how anyone got the idea that Andrew is a 60s Spider-Man or Peter Parker. His character is unique in many aspects but takes root in 80s-90s Spidey with the more Everyman role, and big hair. And skateboard taken out of Ultimate. For one, Spidey wasn’t a total jerk to go for a nut shot but he is known for banter. Btw, that was the only scene with comedic banter in the first movie and then the banter just doesn’t exist again until Amazing Spider-Man 2. Tobey does have banter but it’s spread out and some of them are not great zingers, but that is kinda true to comics Spidey as all of his jokes were targeted towards a younger audience since he was limited by the comics code of authority. So, Andrew at least has that later Spidey feel in the second movie albeit with terrible direction as the Rhino continues to ram into cars with people in them intercut with Andrew joking in the window. Andrew also tried doing multiple different accents. Spidey in the comics, has a New York accent in early comics slightly that is just dropped and turns into just a regular American accent in later comics. I personally don’t agree with Andrew’s choice at 4 accents (maybe 5) as the effect he was going for requires a person to use multiple accents if they commonly encounter others in their lives with different accents. Like say Uncle Ben might sound like he’s from the Bronx. And maybe Aunt May might sound like she’s from Minnesota or his friends are from the ghetto. But that is never the case. He just does them out of nowhere. Also, Spidey is prone to technical jargon. Marc Webb directs it so that other people point out the technical jargon and Andrew is complimented but never really talks smart. He just does smart. Which is an interesting direction that i kinda like sometimes. Andrew’s Peter is entirely unique in many ways.

I gotta say While I was meh for ASM1 for a few reasons I always loved ASM2 SPECIFICALLY for Andrew The Suit was magnificent, the scenes where he's Specifically being Spider-man are some of the best in all of the spider-man films excluding the truck crash early lmao, but from him going out his way to help and encourage that kid, his quipping, his movements, the Firehose scene with the fireman hat on is so authentic to comic spidey, to Andrew's masterful body acting. Also he kept his mask on most of the time in ASM2 and I loved that. Its just the fact the film's plot was so clunky & ehh & they tried to do that whole "Only you can be spider-man cause it has my DNA" thing happen which was lame. Overall Andrew is so great & its always great to see him Also Gwen was Best Girl

@Anime School Shooter literally not a fanboy, how about you offer the proof that this man is a criminal, until then he’s proven innocent. Japanese laws are much different than most other countries. This man does not live in Japan. Their laws do not affect him. Their copyright laws however do. And that’s literally no fault of his own. Someone who has accidentally stolen something is not regarded as a thief. Go and read a book about law and find out what happens to accidental thieves. They give the item back and barely even get a slap on the wrist. But that’s fine. You can just continue to annoy people in order to get them to reply to you. Your obsessive need for attention is so brutally clear. That I actually don’t mind giving it to you. You obviously need to cry about something so just get it out!

Glad you returned Mark and I hope this crap doesn’t happen to you or anyone ever again What I like the most about the Amazing movies was Spider-man itself. I mean Spidey in firefighter clothes, he is quippy but different than MCU. It felt really like Spider-man from the comics. It has good cinematography, just watch the final swing from the first movie. I think the hate comes from that it is a reboot and the botched second movie. While the first was decent it will be overshadowed by raimis first movie. The only thing people would praise the movie series they need to do was learn from the mistakes of Spider-man 3 and made good sequels. But Sony made the same mistake and the rest is history.

He’s my favorite actor and Spider-Man. I just related to him more, he had such a likable personality, and I felt for him so much more. He got a lot of slack from Sony who just wanted to make a lot of money and not tell a clever story. If these movies didn’t have him, the first one would’ve bombed and a sequel would never have been green lit. Yes, Holland is a great young Peter Parker for a newer generation, but Andrew just had the best adult Spider-Man vibe to him. I’m so glad he’s getting the respect he deserves these days.

It makes sense though. It was sudden like most deaths are. It was what pushed Peter to don the mask, and made him feel guilty about how Uncle Ben died. Uncle Ben died trying to do the right thing, even if it was misguided. His sudden death came unexpectedly, as Peter thought he would still have time to make amends with Uncle Ben after their argument. After his death, it caused Peter to go on a misguided and vindictive run to find his uncle's killer as a way of dealing with the guilt of never making amends with his uncle, and as a way to find closure.

I was 14 when the Amazing Spider-Man came out; at this point in my life I had become really invested in American comic books. Fueled by the passion of the original Spider-Man trilogy I watched every Spider-Man cartoon, I read so many Spider-Man comics, I fell in love with all things Spider-Man. It was kinda bittersweet though, I gain such admiration for the character starting with those Raimi films but after familiarizing myself with the every adaptation I couldn't really go back to them with as much love as I had when I was younger. Don't get me wrong those movies are still incredibly well written and great pieces of cinema but they just didn't feel like the Peter Parker I saw in the comics. Then came Andrew Garfield, he was everything I wanted. He was the character I saw in those comics, he had the angst and problems I was so enthralled with, he dealt with problems of responsibility I thought were so relatable. He MOVED like Spider-Man, he fought like Spider-Man, that comic book character I had fallen in love with came completely to life for the first time in my life. Don't get me started with that Andrew Garfield clip from Comic Con where he tells everyone how much the character meant to him. That clip used to make me cry every time I saw it. He got it. Yeah, these films are flawed, they can be really messy at times but I will always hold a special place in my heart for them. They mean a lot to me.

I just don't like how he doesn't seem to stand for any real values. We're never given a real scene of him questioning his values or having internal moral conflict, outside of a ham-fisted Uncle Ben speech and a couple of poorly executed shots of him looking at his mask. He's not given any time to question what he stands for after what Captain Stacy says, because the bridge scene comes literally right after he goes onto the roof to brood with Gwen and put her life in danger.

Finally, people have started realising Andrew was infact, Amazing as Peter Parker, while Tobey wasn't. As someone who's read the comics, and watched the cartoons (90's animated series and The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon) | have to say that Maguire was not a good Peter Parker at all. In fact, he was terrible. In the comics, Peter wasn't some spineless pushover who was afraid to talk to women. In the comics, Peter is charismatic, has a spine, will confidently talk to women. When he met Mary Jane for the first time he was confidently flirting with her, and he has a sense of humor in and out of costume. There was a reason why he attracted Liz Allen, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane. Maguire's Peter was too afraid to talk to the girl that was living next door to him for years. In Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spider-Man's very first apperance) The comic shows him asking a girl out. Yes he gets rejected, but at least he had the confidence to go up and ask her. And this was before he got his powers and gained more confidence in himself. Pre-Spider powers comic had more confidence than post power Maguire Spider.

Something I recently found quite interesting is that the monologue of Responsibility and such in TASM#1 is very similar to a conversation between Peter and Uncle Ben in Ultimate Spider-Man series where Ben finds Peter at a party the night after he ran away from home. You should definitely give it a look cause I'm pretty sure Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield took a lot of inspiration from those comics.
@jakesully007
@jakesully007 2 жыл бұрын
You're right. In fact, the scene in the movie is copied almost verbatim to the conversation you're referring to. It's Ultimate Spider-Man issue #4. It's funny how a lot of people, who ironically claim to be die-hard Spidey fans, say they don't like the line because it "changed" how Uncle Ben said it originally, when in reality the TASM films sticked closely to source materials.

This part at the end about how we go on, about hope, really hits home for me too man. I've been going through a pretty bad time. 2 years ago I started up a business and I sold a wholeheartedly believed in it as my path to success in the future that I dropped out of school to pursue it. Towards the end of last year things started to look like it wasn't going to pan out. That really hurt. It was really difficult to go through that. It was the first thing in life I had done that was my choice, the first thing I did to top off the railroad tracks that most people find themselves on. To fail in that crushed me. Hard left turn, but I typically don't like movie songs that are made by popular artists, but I was in love with Kendrick Lamar around the time the film came out and that song that Alicia keys did with Kendrick featured perfectly in capsulates the spirit of Spider-Man in that movie. I used to listen to it all the time as a kid. Last month my girlfriend played the song while we were on the way up to visit family and it unlocked a core memory. I bet they wonder how I go on. I simply say it's on again.

This exactly! the way they delivered that final message Gwen had for Peter was done perfectly alongside with the rhino scene, the way the citizens and even the cop became instantly relieved that their "Hope" had finally come when they least expected it was done beautifully and it encapsulated what Spiderman meant to everyone and the song with Alicia Keys in the credits is amazingly done from the song itself being one of my favourites to how it fits in the entire movie and even how it fits in the credit scene. Hopefully everything goes well for you my guy

The Amazing Spider-Man was a movie it took me years to see what Marc Webb was going for, and having been curious to see what could have been, I actually made a fan-edit of both movies to try and cut any bit of studio meddling as I could, going off of Deleted Scenes and even notes from Kevin Feige for the sequel, I can absolutely say that these were movies that were actually decent movies robbed by studio interference. Andrew is by far my favourite of the three actors to portray the character and while No Way Home really let Tom Holland shine, it was Andrew that stole the show and I was angry at the fact he never had the chance to truly shine, which is why I really want him to come back in someway

You like every other old head think because you watched the raimi trilogy that that’s how Spider-Man/Peter was suppose to be. There are tons of flaws in the trilogy but it’s all ignored, yet for the TASM duology they’re always brought up. I watched the trilogy in movies as a kid and enjoyed them. Then I got into comics and realized how unlike Peter he was and rewatched them and started to notice all the mistakes. It’s literally just nostalgia, and bias.

I stand by this especially sense re watching these series. But the scene with Flash in school after ben died is PURE talent in every regard. it touches the comics on how flash is abused by daddy, helping lead to his "douchey" bully nature. He literally tells him how it feels good to feel this power, then to come back and say he's sorry about his uncle's death. Flash has a heart, he just can't bring it out often. Honestly I think ALL 3 itirations so far are gold in their respective manners. I do find tom to be the "best" of them all overall, but each version brings a great, unique "flavor" to the Pete/Spiderman we have all come to love.

Welcome back, Mark. Your message about hope at the end was easily my favorite part of this critique, though I would put the turning point of Garfield's Peter having a conversation with Capt. Stacey being a close second. While I can't say I share the same sentiments on liking these films, you definitely highlighted well just how much this pair of films tried to tie itself to Peter's early depictions in the comics as dealing with anger and bitterness and overcoming it to be who his uncle believed he could be. I do think you have a real knack for finding themes that get overlooked in these movies, such as how each of the Raimi villains were reflective of Peter in some manner. One thing I do appreciate, though, is just how much Andrew really does have a passion for the character and how that may pay off for him once more. It's good to see this analysis among other youtubers who took looks at this pair of films and I hope this year treats you better.
