Thanks for sharing these games, I never got to see most of them here in NZ back in the day. Cheers.

I've been watching a few matches lately from the 80s and 90s. Fascinating to compare between then and now; the quality of play seems very similar except perhaps more contact is allowed, tackles etc. I am however most struck by the quality of referees, the lack of player histrionics when fouled and how they didn't surround the ref calling for cards and such. Would love it if player conduct/sportsmanship could be agreed upon by all clubs. One thing I have noticed is how often 'some' players go down like a ton of bricks if a knock is anywhere near their heads and sometimes none at all. And then 5 mins later they are up and running about 🤨 that's just morally wrong.

I'll probably upset a few reds here but for me, the cracks were beginning to appear in the Liverpool team - whilst our best players were getting on a bit. Steve Staunton, David Burroughs, Gary Ablett and Glen Hysen were not good enough and the recruitment got even worse after that. I wonder if any reds disagree or feel the same?

To be fair, without that last minute Michael Thomas goal, this squad would have won the league that season.
@RobCLynch Жыл бұрын
@@louiem2 I think that the Michael Thomas goal came in the last match of the 1988-1989 season, whereas November 1990 was the early part of the 1990-1991 season, so some two seasons later

That was a great formation with 3 at the back, 2 wing backs and midfield with 2 strikers.

Despite the win, It's sad to see that Barnes and Beardsley aren't playing together. Why did Dalgleish even start Beardsley as sub? Houghton too? Then Barnes went off injured. The wheels were truly beginning to falling off this magnificent side.
@DaveWallerLFC2 жыл бұрын
Dalglish (no "e") picked a team to win the game for Liverpool, which they did. His tactics nullified the threat from Gascoigne while leaving enough attacking threat to score 3 goals. It's always a gamble to change tactics and drop good players, but it worked here so it feels wrong to criticise.
@Dead-Ball-Situation2 жыл бұрын
@@DaveWallerLFC of course, but I was making a broader point. The fact that Beardsley kept being dropped (despite having a goal surge) and we didn't see much of him and Barnes play together that season. It was the beginning of the end for this great side. Something wasn't right behind the scenes.

@Dead Ball Situation We were great on this day. Dalglish tried a similarly defensive, nullifying line-up against Arsenal a month or so later and we lost 3-0. I rewatched the highlights recently and we were in that game much more than I remember (as a 6 year old!).

Sad to say it but you must be used to it by now and I've been a Spurs fan since the early 80,s. I've lost count of how many FA Cup semi final defeats we've lost in a row. Hopefully Conte can break that miserable run this year.

Spurs went into this game ten unbeaten, and kept a clean in all but three of those games...and then in this game it started going to shite.

Not interfering with play so not offside. Or was that rule not in existence then?
@pf77462 жыл бұрын
It was in existence, but the interpretation was a lot different to today. But Venables is talking nonsense there, as that was clear an example of not interfering with play as you could get.

Must say I hated how fashionable Spurs were in 90/91, From the commentators to the oppositions fans of teams who weren't playing them that week, EVERYONE seemed to love them. Note how Terry Venables is the manager being interviewed at half time and post match here

waz 312: come off the tail end of the 1980's a football trivia question was: who has won the FA cup more times than anybody else? At this moment in time it was Spurs. The FA cup meant something back then, a lot of pride was still to be found in the game. Not anymore.

Ugh, tell me about it. Most of the lads in my school supported them, for no other reason than Lineker and Gazza it seemed.
