Touhou 6 - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil: Extra Stage (Marisa A vs Flandre Scarlet)

I finally did it! This Stage is now something I don't have to worry about anymore. Here I fight and defeat my favorite character, Flandre Scarlet. But unlike the shot types I've been using in my last 2 Normal Runs, I chose to tackle this Extra Stage with Marisa A
Character: Marisa Kirisame
Shot Type: A (Magic Missile, Star Dust Reverie)
Difficulty: Extra
Starting Lives: 3 (Default, cannot be changed)
Starting Bombs: 3 (Default, cannot be changed)
Pros:
- Very strong and constant shot type (Prolly the strongest of the 4)
- Faster than Reimu
- Focused shots can get a boss's HP down very fast
Cons:
- Bomb is weaker then Marisa B (But at least better than Reimu B's....)
- Short bullet spread. Might be bad if bosses move a lot and you don't have much room to follow them
Now to describe the Extra Stage: This has been a pain to do. Think it took me a total of 20 hours (Not all in 1 day, mind you) to finally get a run done that survived till the very end. In order for me to fight Flan successfully, I need to get enough resources to start with and capture quite some of her Spellcards. And this stage is prolly the least generous of the Extra Stages when it comes to extra lives and bombs (Only 2 extra lives in total can be gained here), so I had to (Near) perfect the entire road to my favorite little vampire. It really made me wish I could skip the entire thing and go straight to the boss fight.
Since bombs don't damage her in any of her spells, it can only be used to save your hide and still you have to be prepared for what comes at you afterwards. So Marisa B's bomb was pretty much nullified for me and I figured I might as well go for the better shot type. At some Spellcards, I was able to time my bombs pretty well. You'll see that at Counter Clock and Maze of Love. Spellcards will be explained in the annotations.
As usual, the dialogue got sped up at the Replay, so I edited as good as I can to slow it back down to normal speed. Of course the tradeoff is that I had to put in the music manually, but no problem there. It's pretty accurate. Fraps wasn't being friendly with this run either, so I had to record it twice and should one part of the first recording lag, I was able to fix it up. It also dropped the fps from 61-62 to 57-58, but no biggie.
Well: Now that that's done, I'm off to Touhou 7 pretty soon :). And btw, don't we all agree when I say we need to see more of Flandre? :( Someone should help her control her power, so she can socialize more

Q: Where did the annotations go?
A: There used to be annotations in the video showing what my approach was to the whole Stage, but KZbin has completely removed annotations a good amount of years ago. I'm probably just gonna leave the video as it is and maybe I will redo the whole stage one day without the hitbox patch (No promise). Speaking of...
Q: Why is your hitbox shown here? Doesn't that start showing from Touhou 7 onwards?
A: I used a patch that will show your hitbox for Touhou 6. Call it cheating if you want, but I can't for the life of me play bullet hell shooters without a visible hitbox (Maybe one day I will try tho). Besides, it also helps me see if I actually got hit right there when I die. You can find the patch at moriyashrine.org . Note that the version of the patch might be different from mine, as the site does update things from time to time

It's true that I rarely see a playthrough with dialogue. It can have 2 reasons afaik: 1: They prefer to stick with the gameplay, skipping the dialogue (Doesn't always mean they don't care) 2: Dialogues automatically speed up in a replay, so ppl get a bit screwed up even if they wanted to show it. Same thing happened with this vid, but I edited it to bring it back to normal speed I will try to get the dialogue on all my vids. I just hope I don't have to restart too much. These games are hard :P

I just beat this with Marisa A for the first time with some help from this video so thanks for that. The annotations were also helpful. I saved the replay so I might upload it if I ever figure out how to do that. Not my finest run since there were some really stupid deaths on spell cards that I normally clear. Like just running down into a crystal even though absolutely nothing is threatening me. Twice. Still, I didn't die at all until the actual boss fight but I did bomb all 3 of Patchouli's spell cards even though I can occasionally capture 2 of them. Lots of derping at the end because I panicked but with a little luck I managed to clear it. So yea, it feels pretty good.

well , it's surely because she slept a major part of her locked time ( her dialogue with reimu) that or because she is a youkai : they aren't humans and don't fonction like them . that could have play a part about how she stayed somehow "sane" also , i lost hope on seeing flan in a official game again when she doesn't even appear in the backround in HP ( was REALLY hoping for flan to be in here...)

On another note: Sorry I haven't been uploading lately. There has been some other games taking most of my time and right now I'm focusing on getting those things done as soon as I can. But I will continue this, no doubt about it. I just have some things to settle first. Next up on the Touhou list is 7.5. What's gonna take most of my time there is getting used to the controls. As far as I've experienced, it's tough to handle. Sure hope I won't have that at the other fighters...

All that to find out that the extra stage itself takes even more effort than the boss. During the practice, I always felt that the stage and Patchouli were wearing me down and Flan was just there to finish me off

Yep. It's the best strategy if you're just want to survive the run and you don't care too much about highscores. If things start to look hectic, it's best to be safe and waste 1 bomb rather than just chance it and lose 2+ bombs and a life.

As a matter of fact, I'm surprise that Flan still is somewhat sane after being locked up for so many years. Any normal person would've completely lost his/her mind and would be found in a straitjacket of some sort. Flan however, although being a bit on the crazy side, does still show some sanity over there and I really don't feel she deserved to be locked up. I'm still waiting for her return in an official game (Not counting Shoot the Bullet)

I still can't do it, only once i have reached her without dying and with the 2 extra lives (but without my bombs so...) and after that i don't understand what's going on.

It sucks that they removed annotations so long ago. They were a much bigger help than they are right now. I might be able to get them back, but I'll have to take some time to see if the current tools that KZbin provides will be of any use. Other than that, it takes some concentration to beat these kind of stages. Only bad thing is there's no real practice mode for it. I think that would've made things more tolerable to do

Funny, Royal Flare for me was the easiest spell she comes up with. Especially with Marisa A since you can rush it like I did here. But even so, I do admit you need to be able to squeeze in the right gaps for this spell and it needs to be done smoothly

Yea, it sucks. And there was no way of knowing for sure if the claim is legit or not (At least when I took a quick check on the company, I didn't see the song or anything Touhou related show up, so I don't know). At least it's just a claim, not a strike, but still... Well, it has to be reuploaded either way, just because of the annotations being gone. I just hope I can get this all fixed soon
