Touhou 8: Imperishable Night - Extra Stage (No Commentary)

Beneath the full moon, even plants sleep through the hours past midnight.
In a human and youkai's trial of guts, what is there to fear?
Victim of the ultimate sin, where can you be found?
At last the extra stage. Compared to others before it this stage is a lot more organized than what you would expect. However that's only because enemy attacks come at you so fast that you have plenty of time to prepare for the next wave. Nothing is really that slow in this stage however in many cases the attacks are aimed at you so you can prepare an easy quick escape.
Keine is all about memorization more than skill. Hell her first spell is all about finding the safe zones. However this does not make her easy by any stretch of the word rather it adds to the stress of not almost requiring you to find and memorize the proper way through her attacks. But lord knows with Mokou right behind her you'll have plenty of chances to practice against Keine...
Mokou...not as bad as Yukari but definitely tougher than Ran and Flandre. It mainly comes from the fact that to beat her you...well quite frankly you have to try to kill yourself. Don't give me that look that seriously is the theme of this fight, almost all of the ways to beat her spells involve you moving all over the damn place a lot more than you would against other bosses and in many cases literally flying towards the danger is a lot safer than running from it. It fits with the whole immortal Mokou thing...but I'll be damned if I don't feel like a particularly suicidal moth that keeps dive bombing a flame. To note bizarrely enough Mokou's cool down phases feel a lot more difficult than her spell cards and later on they actually come at you so fast it's just pure twitch dodging to beat them.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Extra stages. I remember I damn near fell off my chair the first time I fought Flandre and saw how many freaking spell cards an extra stage boss has. But to be fair the spell card count isn't as bad as it seems. There may be a whole lot of them for you to struggle through but the difficulty cuveis a strage one. You have hard spells and suprisingly easy ones staggered in between giving you a moment to catch your breath. For example her first spell "Moon Curse" is fairly difficult but then her following second, third, fourth, and fifth ("Flying Phoenix", "Forgiving Shrine", "Xu Fu", and "Honest Man") are fairly simple while then her sixth spell "Hollow Giant" then ramps the difficulty right back up.

LatenightPC Just keep at it I'm sure with enough practice you can do it. One thing that may help is spending some time in spell practice mode to fully memorize her spell cards. I know I spent A LOT of time experimenting and figuring out tricks to beating spells like her 1st and 6th ones.

+MegamanOmega184 probably a bit late, but the two cards you mentioned to be one of the hardest, gave me little to no issues, moon curse is all about finding the gap between the green shit, while the thing with woo is, that dodging all the random shit was pretty easy 4 me. i captured it actually on my first encounter. by far the hardest spell was honest men, at least for me, while volcano also was a tough one

Why is Marisa/Alice flashing rapidly during the mid-boss?

It's a trick called the Malice Cannon. The Mari/Alice team may be the "strong" team of the four but by themselves neither Marisa or Alice do anything substantially more powerful than anyone else. But this trick only this team can pull off, by quickly pressing and unpressing the focus button to swap between the two of them both characters shots stay on the field just long enough to overlap doing massive damage. It does have its drawbacks however, because you're constantly pressing the slowdown button it makes moving while doing it a severe challenge, but if you're fighting a boss where she stands still for a long time (like all of the mid-bosses spell cards) that ends up being a perfect time to use it.

Also if you are playing with a controller (me) it can be really hard to hold the fire button and rapidly press the focus button. Especially since I don't like using L and R anything other than bombs.

Hmm. Last words like that are always triggered by making the time requirement in the stage and with the requirement being only 10 I thought it was impossible to not reach that spell. This is just a guess now but perhaps it has something to do with not dying to her last spell "Hourai Doll".

Well, I used the Malice Cannon whenever possible, but "Possessed by Phoenix" is a timeout spell, so shooting won't make it end faster.

Are we looking at the same spell card? Possessed by Phoenix is her second to last spell card at 17:19. There's no familiars, there's not even Mokou, that's the one where she leaves the field and leaves a phoenix aura around you to shoot at you for a minute until the timer ends.

MegamanOmega184​ Yes, there are familars, the circle things that fire the shots from the wings. Using Malice Cannon on those depletes the HP bar and thus break the spell before time runs out. It's her penultimate spell since Imperishable Shooting can not be triggered.

For my older video's, I have a "New Commentary Version" where I give instructions that can help you (cause KZbin nuked annotations) But for that ray in particular. It's odd, but so long as you're on the side of Mokou it's coming from/moving towards it. It won't kill you. I'm not sure where the exact cutoff point is (cause by all means, it looks like it should be killing you). But so long as you start moving towards where the next laser's about to come from after dodging the last one, it should work consistently

Determination is a force that exists outside the boundary of death, so a Determined human in the sense of Undertale can overcome death until he accepts the outcome. The Hourai Elixir has you exist outside of reality. You can still interact, as we can clearly see, but you can't age or die by any means. While a human with Determination can still decide their own fate (and subsequent end of life) while being bound to their natural limits, once consumed a human with the Hourai Elixir accept existing for all eternity, in the literal sense.

@@sanstheskeleton679 In a very rough sense, I'd say that Determination has more advantages than the Hourai Elixir. The thing is, Determination can be overcome. As we've seen in Undertale, when an individual comes around with more Determination than you, all those benefits don't apply to you. And as we've seen in the Genocide and Pacifist route, large quantities of Determination can change you from the inside. Whereas the Hourai Elixir can't be taken away once consumed since reality does not affect your state of existence anymore. Also to note is that Determination, unlike the Elixir, is not immortality.
