As you mentioned, I would love to hear more about your transition from the corporate world. I'm sure it's a very inspiring story with lots of ups and downs. Particularly how you managed to get such a high level while studying law and then working full time. For example, were you already really technically proficient at a very young age and "only" had to regain your chops after not being able to play for a while? Anyway, really happy for you and that you're sharing your journey with us. Thanks!

Ok, good to know. It's something I'm kind of waiting for the right time to discuss. I was the opposite of a prodigy. I used to cry looking at sheet music because I was afraid of it. I also quit the guitar once. I didn't really start playing until I was 13. My progress took off when it did because I had crazy passion and I started playing a TON, 4-5 hours on weekend days and then most days after baseball in high school for 1-2 hours at night. College and law school I kept playing, but a little less. First year of law school I essentially quit, but after that I got much more serious and started playing every day no matter what at least a little bit, and then as a lawyer again there would be weeks where I didn't play. It's always been a constant struggle to improve, but now that I'm a touring pro I'm practicing the amount I desire (I shoot for at least 4 hours a day every single unless a travel day, absolutely no compromising, period, end of story) and that's not counting the time I play on stage... since doing that my playing has absolutely skyrocketed

Thank you for your kind words. I have practiced a ton and played in a bunch of different bands, made a bunch of records, and constantly looked for further guitar education through books, lessons, teachers, etc. I still study and try new things every day! Like Guthrie said in a recent interview, if everything you are playing sounds good, then you aren't practicing right. You have to try things that sound horrible and keep working on them to get better!!

Hey Dante, from your perspective up there you prefer standing audience or seats? Do people behave different having the option to seat?
@DanteFrisiello Жыл бұрын
Great question. For a concert I always prefer a standing audience. How can you dance and move and feel a groove and rhythm if you're sitting? Sitting shows feel like auditions, or like recitals. BORING zzzzzzzzz!!!!! Hahaha but I also would love doing clinics or other casual things where people are sitting. It doesn't matter. Put me on stage and I'm going to do my thing at 110% regardless of any context or circumstance. That's what I do

Thank you for sharing. Tell us about your parents were they super supportive? You weren't afraid to break out and follow your passion, not everyone can do that. Explain where your confidence came from please.

OH man that's a great one. I think a whole video should be dedicated to my journey and that's a good topic for sure. One day I'll tackle that massive project. In the meantime let me give you a short and quick answer. Confidence doesn't come overnight. It has to be built by getting your ass kicked and failing a billion times until you eventually learn enough and become competent enough that you know you will succeed. I still experience this now. I seek failure, constantly. Failure is a great gift because it is how you learn. I made terrible sounding albums because I wanted to make music, and that was the best I could muster. I didn't care. I didn't let the bad sounding result stop me. Not everyone's first album has to be god tier - it shouldn't be. But I learned how to make something that sounds good by making tons of bad sounding things. Failure is the gateway to success. Everyone says "OH MY GREATEST FEAR IS FAILURE." That's such bullshit. That's the completely wrong mentality to have!!!! Failure is the gateway to success, period. If you're afraid of it, you'll never learn or improve. You'll just be the same shell of a person doing whatever you have to do to survive instead of doing something meaningful with your life. My parents always encouraged me and supported me, though it did take them some time to understand what I wanted to do with my life and why I would want to throw away such a well-paying and prestigious career - but they eventually came around when they realized it was the only way I'd ever be happy.

@@DanteFrisiello that is awesome! Such a great outlook! Never the victim even in the face of defeat! So much more productive to go “ well shit… that didn't work, let's try this”. Those words will help so many people. I've done the same and have found in reflection a clear path in the rubble that led me to a higher ground and gratification. Even with success you can look back and find something that you can do better. Steve is a great example of someone that just keeps moving up. Thank you for taking the time to share. ~A
