Born there in 1939 Beaumont Ave & 187th street. Basically a little diagonal from Artuso Bakery lived there 22years until I married, go back Bout once a month to Arthur Ave to shop, touch base with a few old friends , It certainly has changed in the past 60 years ,but no matter when I walk the streets even though most of my friends and Family have past away their spirit is always there.

I am so glad you included Mario's Restaurant, one of my favorites since I was in undergraduate school across the street at Fordham University 40 some years ago. I now live across the country, but return to my favorite neighborhood in the Bronx regularly and always include a mass at Mount Carmel and the Arthur Avenue Market followed by a meal at Mario's.

Tom, watched your video last night and got the biggest kick out of it. I was born and raised in Belmont/Bronx, and they were the best years of my life. I LOVED that neighborhood in the 50s/early 60s ~ as far as we kids were concerned, there was no better place to grow up. AND we had the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden as our very own back yard. I wrote a book about it (it's still available on Amazon) and opened it with "Love Letter to a Neighborhood." (Belmont/Arthur Avenue: Little Italy in the Bronx.) Straight from the center of my heart. So, thank you for your wonderful tour ~ so glad you got Gil Teitel in there, he's a great guy! I only wish you could have seen it in the 1950s...99% Italian, with hilarious people on every block. Centanno! (Thanks to Lucy too!)

Even when I studied at Fordham in the late 70's it was still at least 98% Italian - heavy on the Neapolitan.

I am glad the Bronx is getting any attention here! Seems like Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens get all the love. There is a lot of history of the Bronx that has never been covered on this channel, but would love to see. Some old Bronx Historical Society tours are all that are up. The rest are pretty non-professional.

It's amazing to me. To know about Wall Street or The Empire State Building is one thing - to know about the history of a family bakery on a tiny part of the Bronx is off the scale. How the hell do you remember all this stuff?

Much of the movie BRONX TALE was actually filmed in the Ditmars area of Astoria, Queens, NY. A lot of the original Italian Bronx either no longer exits or is populated by other nationalities. My favorite Italian sports figure is the outfielder slugger Rocky Colavito. I understand that he lived in the Belmont area of the Bronx during the 30s, 40s, and the early part of the 50s. He was very popular in Cleveland and Detroit back in the day. Rocky is having a hard time to qualify for the Hall of Fame. Maybe you can help him , Tom. There is a Rocky Colavito Fan Club on line.
