George was so gracious with his time and so gracious to have you play such valuable instruments. This is the best video I’ve seen with Gruhn ever. To be able to hear these instruments played of this vintage even if compressed with KZbin. It’s as close as most of us will ever get to hearing them. It must have been quite an experience.
@DrJeebles3 жыл бұрын
This may be my favorite video you guys have done to this point. I have a feeling you could interview him every day for years and not come close to hearing everything this man knows about guitars. What a character as well... I know that was the first mandolin featured on this channel. Thanks, guys!
@PaisleyPatchouli Жыл бұрын
George Gruhn's childlike enthusiasm for guitars and music is so infectious! It also takes 50 years off his age when he gets going! ;) What a champ! You probably had around a million dollars of incredibly desirable instruments go through your hands in that one session!

Old bone's seasoned to perfection.. Those were someone's pride and joy at one time. Between the craftsman's building them to the people playing them. Absolutely amazing. Bravo to you for your awesome playing.

Man your fantastic playing made those beautiful instruments sound heavenly. The tone coming out of every guitar you played was noticeably different. You had an experience of a lifetime with the private tour from Mr. Gruhn himself. I'm jealous.

Very nice finger picking on the old Martin's! That first one, from 1842?, was just amazing, can't imagine it in person! Glad I looked back to find this one.

I really enjoyed this (as I sit here with my Quad O sinker mahoghany custom shop). I do think that some great bluegrass players cringed when they noticed you totally ignored George's offer to see a Loar.

Is that quad-O sinker mahogany out of this world or what?
@CharlesCornettFL11 күн бұрын
@willowspringfarm6526 I played 12 sinkers at George Gruhn's and they were vastly different from each other. I've never seen a guitar that *commands* you to wait until the right one speaks to like these do. I ultimately found mine from a guy that bought it *to learn on!* He was a great knife maker (think $2000 plus custom knives), but never got going on the guitar. And yes, it's wonderful.

You should look up Gruhn + Billy Byrd, or go to the banjo, or Martin, or mandolin forums all over the 'net to hear more about that great store. So many folks took their prized possessions or family inheritances to Gruhn only to get aggressively pressured into selling for a penny or two on the dollar. Just like when George offered Billy Byrd $1,000 for his refinished D'Angelico at a time when Gruhn was selling original D'Angelicos for $45,0000 and refins for $30,0000. Good people.
