This has been happening for years in JHB with tourists in Rosebank right at the Shell garage situated next to Rosebank mall. Tourists goes to the market and are lured to that ATM. It's an entire syndicate operation which Rosebank police does nothing about. My partner was robbed there and that's when I found out it's a regular thing that nobody does anything about. I've given Rosebank police a hard drive of the footage of the day we were robbed but up until today, nothing was done

It wasn't always like this. And some of the country is still functional and operates under the rule of law. I would take any detour to avoid Mthatha. Take the back roads out to Coffee Bay. It would double the journey time, or even more, and necessitate an overnight stop. But it's still preferable to giving any chance to a town that has ceased to operate under the law.

For the most part SA is safe for now. Just use common sense. We often travel from Cape Town by car up the West Coast; Namibia; along the Garden Route and as far as Port Alfred. Haven't been to umtata or Durban in years tho.

None of us would know about this if it weren't for C/Blanche. I've never seen news of this anywhere. I get the impression many small towns in SA are not doing well. Many owe millions to Eskom etc. They are being badly managed, which allows the criminal element in. I would say the best thing we can do in SA right now is to form neighbourhood watches with patrols and cctv cameras where possible.

One thing I always exercise is limit your withdrawal amounts on the app to only the amount you know you'll need for that day. Never have a limit of R10 000 just leave it at R100 or R200.00 secondly if ANYONE approaches you at an ATM never speak to them instead stop anything that you're doing and block the card.

I was subject to police corruption in Umthata, and have had goods stolen off the back of my bakkie when stuck in traffic ( yes, everything was well packed and tied down, they just cut the ropes). It's a very scary place to go and work in.

We are South Africans and we rode from Empangeni to Port Elizabeth at the first robot at Umtata we were block off by a car and a man said we had to pull off at the garage. Thankfully the man saw we were renting a car that had a tracker in. He did ask that we had to draw money as we had to pay to ride thru Umtata. When we said our card has only R10 in and we live in Port Elizabeth hê said its fine we can go as we don't have to pay. I don't recommend tourist going through Umtata . We did call the police and they said that it's not safe at that spot they hi-jack cars to pull off and rob the people at the garage.

I visited the Nelson Mandela museum, shopped at the Savoy Spar, had lunch at the Mike's Kitchen on my way to Mdumbi for December holidays. Off course there is crime there and everywhere in RSA (and in Italy amongst other countries). I never felt unsafe.

We assisted German tourists in two separate card skimming incidents in Cape Town some years ago, the one couple was told they had to get a 'permit' for the SIghtseeing Bus at a specific ATM, the other had her card swopped at a garage. Within minutes both lost large sums of money. Luckily both were reimbursed by their credit card companies as they had opened a case with SAPS. Even locals can easily fall victim to these scams - if something doesn't feel right, move along.

I have a guest house closer to EL and warn all my visitors they should not be distracted or detracted in Mthata. They target older couples. An elderly Austrian couple’s card was cloned and within 22 hours R75000 was withdrawn and spent at cellular shops.

Everywhere is a hotspot. I'm from Mthatha. Don't stop for anything. There's a small town after Mthatha called Tsolo (about 40km from Mthatha) on your way to Durban. You can stop there and refill. It's much safer than the hellhole that is Mthatha.

Sad. Just another example of how South African citizens themselves are shooting themselves in the foot and destroying a better future for their own children concerning foreign investment and economic growth.
