I saw Toy Caldwell in a small bar in Durham Connecticut, I believe it was 4 months later he passed. I was devastated, I grew up with marshall tucker, I stood literally 4 feet away from him for that whole show. I remember he came out and said, “Well, because of contracts Im not supposed to play any MTB songs, but hell, I don’t care Im gonna do em anyway” Then they busted into Ramblin and blew my mind out for the rest of the night. Toy Caldwell was an outrageously talented guitar player

And Paul. He was the youngest member, started playing with them when he was still a teenager and drove those guys like the engineer of a freight train. Incredibly talented, hardworking player who blew most drummers away with his innovative jazz stylings that helped make this band's sound so unique within the genre of southern rock. But each played his own essential role in that sound, and the chemistry and energy and tightness were something to behold live. I saw the last show of the original band (check out the "Live on Long Island" recording from April 1980). I remember being devastated, hearing reports on the radio of Tommy's accident in Spartanburg just two days later. At school the next day, I told my friend Brad, with whom I'd seen the show at Nassau Coliseum, that Tommy was in critical condition and we followed the story for the next week until hearing he'd passed away at the age of 30. As Toy's late widow Abbie told me a few years ago, Toy and the band were never the same after that, though the other five plowed forward with Franklin Wilkie on bass for a few years. And they still put on some great shows before Toy, George and Paul (and eventually Jerry) had the good sense to move on, knowing things could never be the same. I almost don't want to rehash previous comments I (and so many other fans from the '70s) have made about the next 35 years of the so-called "Marshall Tucker Band" because, having been present at that final show, I find the whole story incredibly sad. Obviously, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I find it stunning that some commenters actually rave about the atrocious cover band still masquerading as MTB. Somehow, Doug's managed to play "musical chairs" with a rotating southern-rock Spinal Tapesque lineup that could never remotely resemble anything like the original band. Especially given the sole remaining member's figurehead status and his near-complete loss of any vocal capabilities. I hadn't intended to submit another rant on this topic. Nor am I trying to be malicious about the path Doug chose. He had an extraordinary voice and range , probably among the best in rock history, no exaggeration, and listening to his vocals in the original band still gives me chills. But I prefer to remember the band as it was, the Marshall Tucker Band that existed for less than a decade, a band that never got quite the recognition it deserved. Of course, neither did Toy, one of the most talented guitarists and gifted songwriters of his generation. Thankfully, we have the old albums and videos to keep the band's legacy alive. And finally, Toy and his band's version here of "Running Like the Wind," is tremendous. If anyone could nail a great Marshall Tucker song -- and even give it a unique twist -- it naturally would be Toy Caldwell. To anyone who's still reading and has a shared love and appreciation for a band that had such a positive impact on so many lives, thank you -- and keep listening!

@@kurtjustin7918 I don't think there's any way that I could agree with you more. You seem to know a lot about the band that's great. I remember when Tommy was in that accident and I heard about it. I didn't know if the band was going to continue on as I knew Tommy was the driving force behind the band. The next album that came out I can't say that with some of their finest work but I was glad to see it anyway. I seen the tribute band and I looked at my wife and I told her this is just a bunch of guys playing Marshall Tucker music. Lot of people think that Doug ran the band into the ground .I agree I don't know about the deal with Toy and Doug it had to been bad I new Doug had a big head thought he was the greatest. And I did like Doug he did have a voice. Phyllis was the one who called me and invited me when they got inducted into the South Carolina Music Hall of Fame. I enjoy that evening it was happy and sad at the same time. As far as I know that was the last time they had gotten together. Thank you so much for your post I did enjoy reading it knowing I'm not the only one that feels that way

@@nautiquecowboynautiquecowb5317 Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your own special memories of the band, nautique. It's heartwarming to know that so many fans from that era remember the Marshall Tucker Band so fondly. They were -- and still are -- a joy to listen to. I actually didn't get into their music until late in the original band's career. I remember the excitement I felt when I bought "Together Forever" and was amazed by the musicianship. The opening track, "I'll be Loving You" is stunning, combining each of their unique talents, and Toy and Doug were at their absolute peak. I'm not sure Toy ever sounded better (or faster) than he did on that song, which to this day may be my favorite of theirs. And Doug's soaring vocals are hard to capture in words. Then, two songs later comes "Singing Rhymes," which you also commented on, nautique. Like you, I consider it one of my favorites. It's a beautifully arranged showcase of their talent, and displays them stepping a bit outside the box with Toy and Doug sharing lead vocals. Jerry's flute -- and, of course, Toy's trademark guitar (I think he plays both acoustic and electric on this track) -- kind of pull the whole thing together. It was probably at the 1980 show I mentioned before -- Tommy's and the original band's last together -- that I recall a few fans walking around the arena with a huge sign (I think it was a bedsheet). It said something like "MTB SINGING RHYMES 1980." Much later, I heard an old interview with Tommy (check it out if you can find it somewhere on youtube) where he talks about the title "Together Forever." Speaking of the original band, which sadly lasted only another two years because of his passing, Tommy said something like, "If you don't catch the Marshall Tucker Band this time around, it's gonna be your only chance 'cause there ain't gonna be another Marshall Tucker Band after we're done." He was so right. That album, and the cover photo, and the live shows I was fortunate enough to see, are etched in my memory. I'd like to think their musical legacy will keep them together forever, for us and for future generations. Thanks so much, nautique, for helping to rekindle the memories that keep the band alive.
