Awesome videos man. I'm doing a reassembly with this motor on an 85 Celica so appreciate your approach.

Sir what brand are your metal timing chain guides. I'm doing a complete rebuild on a 22re. I ordered a complete rebuild kit and they sent me one metal guide and a plastic guide for the passenger side. i must confess to having leaned heavily on your vids as well; as others to do this build. from one OCD mech to another thanx for your efforts.....lol

Thanks for watching, I'm sorry I don't know a brand name for the guides, I found all these parts on Ebay if that helps.

Hey Groutaone you forgot to shim up the tensioner you should have 2mm slack when you released it your one looks like 12mm it will rattle.

There are arrows on the two oil pump gears that face out, so you can see them.

What did you do in order to get the old part of the head gasket off?

I have a 89 re motor if this is an efi motor, Did your old timing gear and chain have a thrust bearing in between the cam and timing gear? I saw one in an exploded parts drawing and thought that maybe this part could have got lost or left out then again could be only for carburetor vehicles.

No sir mine did not.

There is a thin metal disc that goes on EFI models, that carb models don't have.

@@groutaone thanks for reply.. Motor has been together and running for 400miles now... Reinstalled OEM everything except put a Teflon metal metal gaurd on chain area driver's side of motor... I just was puzzled why dealer parts pic showed one and was concerned about proper alignment. Pulled cover again to check and re-adjust valve lash... Everything seems to be aligned and fine. Dealer pic must have been for carbureted model with mechanical fuel pump. And if I am wrong time will show on timing gear teeth.. so far it's fine.

Wrong ! The washer must be fitted only for EFI the carby models have a cam follower between the dizy gear & cam so to operate the mechanical fuel pump. Please Note: if these are not fitted the distributor gear will not mesh correctly. 🧐

Thank you for your What you stated I will seriously look into this..what I noted when I had it apart was there is a spacer with a "tit" on it that lines up and pushed in a hole then that is somewhere in the order of things..where distributor gear gets bolted on to the cam... But then there was an additional spacer sandwiched in the mix where the distributor gear gets bolted to the cam.. I was told it was to align the mechanical fuel pump lever and mine is e.f.i. this was the spacer shown in the exploded view of the dealership parts diagram that there seemed to be varying statements about why it was/wasn't, should/shouldn't be there... Now I don't know if it was lost in the process when sending the head out with the cam. but now since I am going to be in there anyway probably changing the cam and rockers.. I will ask a rebuilder and distributor what the deal is... Take everything into consideration and put it back together... I wish I knew someone with an 89 e.f.i. 22re who has there valve cover off so I could look.

I gotta ask did it end up leaking?

I should maybe take a good look but I think it is sealed enough that it does not drip oil on the floor.

@@groutaonedid it leak? I just did this and took your advice and method on the head and it leaked at the head and timing cover. I’m starting to think cutting the gasket off is bad advice my friend.

@@Muskokajames Sounds like your silicone or sealant has a problem holding.

@@groutaone I just re did it all, I really took time cleaning the head area with a light 180 grit sand, I’m praying it bonded better this time. If it doesn’t seal again I’m probably going to start from scratch, remove the head this time and put a new head gasket in.

Also I don't think anywhere in this video series I use words like "you should do it like this" instead I am showing how I did it.

Well it is obvious you know what you are doing. But, the lower timing gear, which side faces out? Mine is flat on one side, has a hip on the other. But your video barely shoes that sprocket, and when it does, it is out of focus. When you are putting it on, the camera is aimed at the lower radiator hose. So you know what you are doing, but nobody else does. Not criticising you wrenching skills, and i know how tight that space is, its just well not helpful for some of us to watch and learn.

One side of the gear should have a mark or a dot by one of the teeth, that's the side that faces out.
