My '94 Toyota is due for a chain replacement...perfect timing with this video. Thanks!!

About to perform surgery on a 1989. Driver's side chain guide vanished at 111K miles (it's in the oil pan , no doubt ). Thanks for your videos and for taking the time to produce them

Mine just disappeared too. How'd it go?

It turns out that mechanic that made that discovery was possibly dishonest and at lthe very least, mistaken. The plastic guides were barely worn at all but I replaced them anyway. The truck surprised me with how much better it ran with a tight, no-slack, timing chain system. @@franciscoalvarez292

Thanks for the video. I just ordered a timing chain kit for my 87 22r.

I did a 20r back in the mid 70's . First thing I did was drop the chain in the pan . My Pop was so proud .🙄 😂👍🛐✝️🙏❤️

I don't know your age but you may have been just a boy in the mid 70's, I give you credit for being willing to work on that engine and learn along the way.

@@groutaone I'm a '62 model 👴 🤣 I think I was 15 when that foreign job rolled into our shop. Hilux I want to say it was . First one I ever worked on . Really was a learning experience . I was an adept mechanic on detroit , Cummins , john deere , perkins etc and gm ,ford , and was in trade school . Just a silly time consuming lesson thankfully no harm . I do believe it to be the most complicated gas engine I'd tackled at my age . As we had no manual for it in our very rural Florida cow town . Alway good to hear from you my friend !

Another tip is just get the breaker bar on that pully bolt and bump the engine...and dont worry bout tdc u will have the valve cover off u can check all that when u do the chain

A year ago i replaced the main oil seal. I used a long cheater bar and weged it and cranked the engine a second ( in neutral)and it loosed that bolt. Now I have to replace my broken timing chain. Hope it will be easier 😆

Thoughts on cost of just replacing the timing chain guide?
@richardnessman4804 жыл бұрын
check the timing cover to see if the chain has made a groove on the inside of the cover so your oil doesnt piss out after assemby...

So you would have crank pulley at 5 and the distributor at #1 ?

I am also getting ready to do this to my 86 4Runner I am hoping that what an issue is I have tried everything else it was running great I parked it went to start it the next morning it cranked fired then nothing I have checked the cold start injector it's working the fuel pump is working the fuel pump relay is working I have tried grounding out the wires to the injectors. Nothing and it has brand new cap plugs wires that were done a few weeks before it died on me I am at a loss so thinking of checking the time and chain. It doesn't even want to fire if I give it a shot of go-go juice down the throttle body

I had a 91 4runner and the guide rusted off and popped the chain off! It only had 140K on it at the time. My mechanic said it was 1 in a million.

I thought it was special that the head is held down with the cam bolts. When I fixed one the chain had broken. So I pulled the head anyway to inspect the valves, is there a way to do the chain without doing a head gasket?
@groutaone4 жыл бұрын
I think it has been done by others without removing the head but still removing the oil pan, is it possible to leave both the pan and head on? That I don't know.

So when is the Cummins 12v and NV 4500 coming to life?

How many hours does this take? Should chain be replaced at some interval. ? Or just when you hear noise?
@groutaoneАй бұрын
Some good questions, been some years since I did this, I would guess if things go well maybe about a 10-12 hour job, I don't know about an interval but I could hear mine had a problem.

Alot of this is a waste of time and money if a 22r has had regular oil changes and the chain has music unless the cover has a hole wore through it the only thing you need to do is pull the cover off replace the tensioner and guides seal it back and run it I worked for Toyota for 27 years performing this on many 22r motors all these timing chain videos and hear say are put out there to sell you something you don't need chain, gears 🙄 Take my advice people if all is wrong is the chain rattle all it needs is a new tensioner and new guides. Save yourself the trouble of worrying about TDC, changing the timing gears and chain unless it is completely necessary. On the other hand if you're completely rebuilding the engine from the ground up replacing everything new is highly recommended. Older engines are seasoned to it's original parts, gears etc.
