Thankful and grateful for this video. The shorter the video, the better for all. For example, we do not need to see how you fill all the oil. Not a sermon, just a thought.

I like a technician that cleans work are and parts as he goes. I thought I was the only one that does LOL. Also that silver part is for draining the filter but I never found one that works, they normally get frozen stuck

Thank you, very straight forward and honest info.

Peter, as I’m watching the video you put the new o-ring with the flattened o-ring and use the first old o-ring you took off to put on the filter housing.
@rk22cc2 жыл бұрын
this did seem to be a sloppy video for you?? Torque specs?, replace the small oil drain gasket??
@koomo8014 жыл бұрын
I don't waste time with the filter drain, either. If it's already sealed there, why introduce a possible failure? I put a quart-size freezer ziplock bag around the filter when I remove them and it catches all of the oil as I unscrew it.

Looks like you have the oil filter cap removal tool for the 1.8 liter engine found in the Corolla and not the one that fits thus RAV4. I take that back. It seems that O'Reily has some sort of universal wrench that is suppose to work on all Toyota oil filter caps. Other companies make two different wrenches. Also, proper procedure is to drain the oil filter housing before removing the oil filter cap to make less of a mess. At least you mentioned it. I think it would have been better to do it that way and then just mention that you normally just remove the whole thing.
@chillios22224 жыл бұрын
Always changed it without raising it and nothing special except I got the Toyota wrench tool. Sometimes the drain plug will not loosen. I've also used the drain plug to tighten. Yeah no need really on the silver cover. It does have its own seal though I believe. Do pay attention to the groove when u remove. You can feel the gap with your fingers. These do drain for a while. Grab a coffee. I have like 2 of the knockoff wrenches. They work ok but the factory one is nicer.

Love your videos! Would you consider covering the VTTI cold start rattle that seems common. My 2012 2.5l Rav4 is suffering from it. I am not sure if it can be ignored. Thanks
@9ZERO6 Жыл бұрын
It *can* be ignored, however only for so long. The correct repair is replacing both VVTI cam gears. Shop around, some shops charge way too much. I just did mine in 3 hours. However I have a decent amount of mechanical knowledge. My 2010 Rav4 4 cylinder was rattling quite loud when starting cold. By the way, I used a set of aftermarket gears from Amazon that cost $150.00. OEM parts are much more expensive.

hello. mistake #1.never remove engine oil cap and dip stick and leave open like that.any debris could get in there.the correct way is to unscrew the cap completely and leave it in place;same with dip stick ,pull up a bit to break seal. mistake #2 always open silver cap first,gives you a chance to drain filter cap and at the same time put anew seal;it's provided in the filter and seal kit.don"t be lazy. keep up the good work .

Great video, thank you! It has encouraged me to try changing the oil myself in our Rav4. Did you always use torque wrenches when tightening in the dealership? Or would you often just hand tighten by feel?
@jasonfoo86514 жыл бұрын
if you dont have a torque wrench. when you screw on the oil filter, screw it til it hits the base and do a 3 quarter turn. for the oil drain bolt just hand snug, do not make it super tight. And dip your finger in your new oil and lubricate the new oil filter gasket so it helps removing the filter easier next time when you do it. And make sure you get some cardboard to put on the floor or your going to make a mess unless you have a bag of absorb all. and dont forget to write down your mileage when changing.

Any difference between filtering capabilities of this type of filter vs spin on filter? Why does Toyota switch to this design. Gets very messy and chance of failure
@greggtracton25882 жыл бұрын
I was always taught to fill the filter with clean oil before replacing it. Why did you skip this step? Also, you’re teaching people how to change oil at home, so it’s nice that you tell us how to tighten without a torque wrench, but how about showing us how to do it *without* a lift or pro oil catcher pan? Essential questions arise, if you think like this… Do I have enough room under the car without lifting it? Does it matter if the car is level?

The wind must blow south approximately 5mph if it's 10mph the oil change will be a waste

Thanks for your video. I get that Toyota is saving on the disposable steel can but the old style was so much easier. Sometimes I take it in for as oil change and sometimes I DIY. I have the filter wrench and all but this time the filter was put on (at a dealer) with a death grip and I'm afraid I'll break the cap. Is it any easier to remove when cold or hot? Or any other advice? Thanks!
@chillios22224 жыл бұрын
I think it's easier when it's still warm I have burned myself a little but I think warmer always easier.
@user-tb7rn1il3q3 жыл бұрын
I think you have it backwards. The 19 and newer use the steel canister filter. The old RAVs use the junk cartridge filter.

Have u tried amsoil motor oil
@ToyotaMaintenance4 жыл бұрын
not yet , very expensive , right ?
@rightlanehog31514 жыл бұрын
@@ToyotaMaintenance Amsoil Signature Series Full Synthetic is simply the best oil on the market. When used in combination with a long life oil filter, its extremely long service life makes it cheaper to use. Project Farm KZbin Channel did some thorough testing comparing all major oil brands and it came out on top. Some people think Toyota is too expensive and buy a cheaper brand, do they really save money and time in the long run?
@robertbonner59734 жыл бұрын
Peter Boissiere AMSOIL is expensive and not sold at a lot of auto part stores . After watching the project farm oil test , Pennzoil is the oil I use . It barely lost to AMSOIL and was better than AMSOIL in some categories. Plus , it’s available at most part stores , and a lot cheaper, especially if you buy it at Walmart. In addition, Pennzoil has mail in rebates online , which makes it cheaper than most oils out there .
@koomo8014 жыл бұрын
@@robertbonner5973 Amazon currently has 5 qts of Penzoil Ultra at about $21, and occasionally dips below $18. Hard to beat.

How often should I change my oil/filter when using Synthetic Oil? I heard 5,000 miles and others are saying 7,500-10,000 for synthetic Oil, but im not sure what to believe. Same 2010 Rav4
@bradleycross59873 жыл бұрын
Does manual say 5K? Also depends how hard you drive vehicle and if you want to baby it (5K) or need to save money. I would monitor color of oil and once it starts to go dark replace it. Likely with a max of 7.5K or 12 months.
