Peter, do you think Toyota went backwards to the 1950's going from a spin-on filter to a cartridge oil filter? Baxter Performance makes a spinon filter adapter. What do you think of converting to a spin-on filter? Why did Toyota make the filter housing out of plastic instead of metal?
@kalani19873 жыл бұрын

If you want a spin on filter, newer Toyotas are referring to spin on canisters. I would stay away from conversion kits as they may reduce the oil flow rate.

Peter, the Toyota guidance for oil changes on our new 2020 Rav4 state that the oil dipstick markers are now "too little" and "excessive," and state to get in the middle of the range. I, like you, always used those as "add/full" lines. Why the change?
@njsongwriter3 жыл бұрын
They are still add and full marks. Too little means add oil and excessive means over-full. Let's not create any confusion here. Nothing has really changed. The oil capacity listed in the owner's manual should bring you up to (but not over) the full mark which would be excessive.
@jeffreydevoti70003 жыл бұрын
On a oil change, take note of the level on the dipstick, it should read exactly full . On used cars I have found one or two that had the wrong dipstick, instead of trying to find correct one, after filling with correct oil quantity, just take a carbide scratch tool and deeply mark correct full level, and reference that to oil level. I know it's in short supply these days, but just use common sense. 🤔

There is nothing wrong with the plastic units as long as they are torqued correctly to 25 N•m ±5 N•m (18 ft.lbs. ±3.5 ft.lbs.). Even the Aluminum units have been known to break when over-torqued.
@peterrudy92073 жыл бұрын
@@njsongwriter Plastic is plastic
@njsongwriter3 жыл бұрын
@@peterrudy9207 I agree that plastic is plastic but I've had an authorized Toyota mechanic tell me that the plastic unit will last the life of the vehicle if it's not torqued more than 18 ft.lbs. ±3.5 ft.lbs. I change my own oil so I'm counting on him being correct. I've changed it 7 times so far and it's not showing any indication of wear or deteriorating. I know plastic can get brittle with age. If it ever breaks maybe I'll switch to aluminum then... But 18 ft.lbs. ain't much. Still if the aluminum one is cast aluminum, I would stay away from it. If it's forged aluminum then I'd be more likely to switch.

The oil filter should be removed first, because it takes much less time to drain all of the oil out of the filter housing, then it does to drain all of the oil out from the oil pan! I always allow at least one to two hours to drain the oil from the drain plug! This way I get much more of the old oil out then I could, if I only let it drain for say, fifteen minutes!
