Graded me my purple belt back in the day. I remember looking at his feet and thinking they looked like slabs of meet. He was an imposing fella. Loved his training sessions.

Terry was a legend round Merseyside.Used to do the doors at some clubs. There was a big kick-off in a well known rough club in Birkenhead and Terry walked through dealing out kicks to the head.Apparently scored 11 knockouts....or so the story goes.

He was teaching either Arnold or Stallone some moves for a movie. They were having a bite to eat and their old teacher shows up. Some big hardcase from Hollywood. Trying to impress Terry he told him "I've had 3 fights to the death". Terry coolly asked him How many did you win. Arnold or Stallone burst out laughing. Sorry I cant remember exactly who the star was but it was 40 years ago.

It was Arnold, he and Terry O'Neill were quite close friends for a while. I think Terry had a small role in Conan the Barbarian as a result.

I had the pleasure of sensie's wisdom and skills when I studied at Manchester polytechnic. Eventhough I trained Korean karate (Teakwon-do) everytime I heard he was coming to grade the shotokan club I would attend just to be inspired from his expertise not mention his ethics and just the way he was. Fighting karate men. These old school practitioners didn’t know that “karate don’t work.” They just whipped people with it.

Spot on! After training 4 hours a day, 6 days a week for at least the first ten years , I became super fit but still was not confident enough with my skills. After much soul searching and taking a break for 2-3 years, I began to realise that over 50% of what was being taught was impractical. Together with Bruce Lee’s philosophy on the martial arts I re-evaluated my art and began to change things to make it workable. Then I started to gain some success!

Bill Uk, I am honoured by your comment. I am not taking the credit away from all my instructors (Ray Fuller, Jimmy Patterson,Pauline and many others). Years on I have met those who were ahead of me and some have commented that karate does not work. It was a phase that I went through in my journey also. The basic form ( i.e., kata and basics ) are the foundations. How you go onto develop these two in freestyle is the key. I once questioned my friend and teacher Jimmy Patterson on the effectiveness of kata and it’s interpretation. I felt bad because as knowledgeable as he was he was unable to show me a way forward. It was years later, through different disciplines, that karate or it’s development into a complete discipline, truly started to come together as a complete form. I thank my God for the wonderful people I met on my journey and thank you again ,@Bill UK, for your kind words. God bless you all.
