The years slip by. I was only a young boy back in the 80s. I did trolleys 🛒 in Dunnes Stores Limerick Ireland back in the late 90s. Mothers with their babies would pay 1 pound for use of a baby trolley. The winters were freezing 🥶 cold.It was an outside trolley shed. Burger land is there now where the shed was. Managers could be tough and customers would hardly know you were there. There were some friendly customers that would talk to you.😊Managers would laugh when I use to run into reception to get change thinking I was trying to chat up the girl working there. I now work for a landscaper for the last 20 years.😊😅

The is pure pop gold. The harmonic richness of kirsty MacColl's song, reminiscent of the Phil Spector girl group genre, evoking youthful romantic exitement. Tracey's powerful but also slightly ironic vocal delivery - and in this video great comic acting. The richness of the backing vocals. The high "Baby!..." (they got Kirsty MacColl herself in to sing that because Tracey couldn't hit the note). I love melody and this is one of the best. I find it blissfully overwhelming.

Actually, no! The song isn't about that at all. That's the video telling that original story (w/ the clever inclusion of McCartney which makes this immortal). It tells a poignant story that works w/ the lyrics but isn't even remotely suggested by them when reading them. It really is a great video and a great song written by a then-16 year Kirsty MacColl who died tragically young in a boating accident.

Kirsty MacColl wrote such beautifully-crafted songs about young love; I believe she was only seventeen when she wrote They Don't Know. The musicianship here is absolutely first rate, the vocal harmonies are sheer perfection (it's lovely to hear Kirsty's voice so prominent amongst the backing vocals). I could listen to this song all day long, but it's SO perfect that it makes me cry every time I play it - makes me wish I was that young all over again - when everything was fresh and exciting. @@rabfallon4507 From Wikipedia: The production of Ullman's "They Don't Know" was credited to Peter Collins, Waterman's Loose Ends partner. Waterman himself would hone the track, including having MacColl and Rosemary Robinson (the wife of Stiff Records president Dave Robinson) "add Shangri-La-type backing vocals", in Waterman's words, and having MacColl reprise her original "bay-ay-be-ee” to intro the third verse (as Ullman had a limited high-end range).[11]

This is a love song in its purest form. Sweet without being sappy, glorious without being gushy. Tracey sings the tune with enough of a melodic power to give the lyric a lot of feeling while not being melodramatic or over-the-top about it. Besides; the music does that all on its own. By the way...the arrangement sounds like something Jim Steinman or Phil Spector would have pulled...all lush strings, lots of percussion, piano/synthesizers, throbbing bass lines and some admittedly powerful guitar. Music needs more songs like this. Where is simplicity when it's most needed?
