Amazing bravery. Unless you have actually driven a very fast open topped car you just cannot appreciate just how f'in scary it is! What a beast! What a tremendous race! Caterham wins the curves and the tight places, the Porsche just holds its own there, and then (sometimes) reels the Caterham in on the long straights. The number of times the Caterham breaks loose and slides is hair-raising, frankly, but the driver is simply magnificent. If the R500 were more aerodynamic, perhaps it'd win those straights too. Scary fast car! Hats off from this Yank to the Brits!

That one, on a car so light, is indeed very very difficult. It is not enough to just lift the throttle a bit and match the steering with the car swiveling, you have to match _everything_ to get back to traction _and_ going forward. Also, it took _two_ corrections, that's terrifying.

Colin Chapman my have been a unpleasant fellow in real life, but you have to give credit to the man on the Lotus 7 design(Caterham clone of). What is truly remarkable about the Caterham is not the grip levels but how the chassis and suspension performs once the grip has failed. I know it looks like its on the limit but actually its beyond the limit on its little skinny tyres, of course it takes a driver who has balls to see it through but the Caterham is pretty forgiving, I know because I use to track day one a few years ago, all the more impressive considering the Lotus 7 is a late 1950's design.

@yourfaveshopper8 жыл бұрын
Neil Scrivener Just because he is a good driver and most importantly he has a lot experience, but it's not too much, a couple of degrees more on the landing angle and the Caterham would roll over and that windscreen would go fast, so death would be a 50/50 possibility.

Indeed. In the 60s he said he would build an openwheeler that was so light it would literally fell apart going across the finish line. There are many drivers still alive today who could attest to that. Also, every car he built was a bit different to the others, even in the same category. So when you bend your Lotus at an historic meeting its not enough to order replacement parts becausethere is no guarantee they will fit
