We will never run out of uses for the "spring noise effect", LOL! The good: It seems no one got hurt, and we had a meet! The bad: The drivers repair and towing bill. With this in mind, please stay safe and be careful!

@meme-xn6wr3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the problem with this crossing is similar to Ashland, people not from Fairport commonly mistake the tracks for railroad street, a street about 150 feet away from the tracks. Going north, there’s another couple of streets that are easy to mistake. This would’ve been so cool if I was there, to have big long bulky engines stopped infront of me would be awesome. But, I’ve never been smart enough to catch trains that way. Thanks.
@nate47453 жыл бұрын
Where the streetlight ends, the tracks become dark as ink. This intersection, like Ashland, should be bathed in light so that even the worst drivers could see where they're going.

perhaps a mixed blessing though as the light reflects off the windshields in the rain and the dark. But your point is well taken. Perhaps crosshatched apron down the rail a bit with a ramp so vehicles can make it back up to road height again. Bollards connected to the signals that go up and down just outside the margins of the tracks at the road edge?

I think that a lot of people have forgotten that they're supposed to look where they're driving. They want to turn left, they turn left without paying any attention to what might be in the road (or that there is no road there!). I would suggest some sort of low structure (kind of like a curb) with reflective marker paint between the tracks - made so that it doesn't cause problems for the trains, but does keep people from pulling stunts like that.

While not excusing inattentive driving, some of the confusion drivers have at this crossing may be a result of the traffic signal co-located at the crossing for south bound traffic. The signal itself is tied to the lift bridge (located just off to the left, currently closed for repairs) and to wire traffic detection loops located in the roadway between the bridge and the railroad crossing. The traffic light turns red when either the lift bridge is up, backed up traffic is detected or the crossing is activated. This was added several years ago in an attempt to prevent cars stopping on the track due to backed up traffic. “There is a traffic light, therefore there must be an intersection”. Another source of confusion at this crossing, which will be seen when the bridge reopens, is when the lift bridge is up, not only does the traffic light for the southbound traffic turn red, but the south bound railroad crossing activates, but not the northbound crossing. Some north bound drivers seeing this paradox, assume the crossing is defective and stop.
@MattChaffe3 жыл бұрын
Maybe they need to add road reflectors along that crossing so people have some sort of idea as to where they are, but it still doesn't make sense. At least we didn't have another accident. Hopefully the police and people involved called the number on the gate, like many people should do if they get stuck.

It looks like the accident happened at 10pm. The bike shop closes at 5pm. Very little reason to turn left right there. Its possible they over shot Railroad Street, but again, all those shops would be closed at the hour. You do have T-Foots on the right, but I think they are closed right now.

Phil, we call them flares over here. I guess the guy didn’t want to be run over while he inspected things...
@drivingnewengland-thedrive3 жыл бұрын
It’s part of CSX “Stop and Protect” procedure. The fusee’s are placed on the center line of the roadway at the location of each stop bar or stop line. The fusee’s are being used in place if the crossing signals. The rules of the stop and protect do not specify all the different conditions possible, so when one is in place and it’s nighttime the fusee’s must be used even when the crossing signals are working.

First, what is a "Spring Noise Effect" and why are these vehicles making left turns onto these tracks? I live approx. 80>100mi from there. It would be nice if there was alot more of a description as to why these folks turn left over there. Intoxicated, dumb, or what?
@asclepi3 жыл бұрын
Sir the "spring noise effect" refers to the short artificial sound effect you would hear at exactly 0:21 in the video, its general meaning is along the lines of "uh oh, someone is being dumb right now". There could be several reasons why car drivers decide to venture on to the rail tracks, although it always boils down to poor driving habits. It could be a distraction (often from their phone), following GPS instructions incorrectly (ie turning left when it says to turn left in 0.5 miles), intoxication, lack of situational awareness (often due to speeding), and so on. Note that in any case the full responsibility lies with the car driver and they should and will be liable for all damages to either the rail infrastructure or their own vehicle.
@StereoMike063 жыл бұрын
You need to be a real idiot or completely toasted (from one of the 6 bars within 500 feet of the tracks) to do this. The building to the left is a Bike Shop with a tiny parking lot. It's past 10pm from the time, so no reason to go into this parking lot. Only explanation is they thought it was lift bridge lane about 100 feet past the tracks where you have bars and restaurants and a large parking lot.
