@Swiftbow
@Swiftbow 3 жыл бұрын
@@CaitlynWemyss Well, sure. So mass transit: - Reduces freedom of movement (people can only travel on designated routes) You can try to add more routes, but this increases costs. - Reduces cargo capacity (people can only bring home what they can carry, which is less efficient) - Shunts costs to tax base, instead of to those using the system. (So, instead of paying for your own gas, for your own trips, everyone has to pay for other people. What you think of such a system is probably based on your political preferences. I hate paying for other people, and I hate other people paying for me.) Now, buses of course have tickets, but they do not pay the entire cost of operation. - Rail systems require considerable capital to put in place, and mobility is even more limited than buses - People with motion sickness suffer when using mass transit. (This is more of a personal problem, but I'm not the only one.) - Costs are NOT generally less than personal transit. Example: I used the city bus in high school and paid for a (discounted) student punch card for it. After I bought a car, I compared the cost of gas week to week with the cost of the punch card. Gas was LESS. Now... there are some other costs with owning a car. But still... - Time costs for passengers. (In almost all cases, it will take you significantly longer to reach a destination. I use my own example again. To get to school by car was 10 minutes. It was 30-40 minutes by bus. One time, when my car was at the mechanic, I had to use the bus to get to the auto shop to pick it up. About a 20 minute trip with a car. Nearly 2 hours by city bus.) I hope this was informative. Some of these problems are solved with more routes and more buses per route. But some of them are more difficult, and all of them cost more and more money. Benefits also vary based on the size of the city and how congested the traffic gets. I live in a medium-sized city (~500k)with (to be fair, mostly) decent traffic. Edit: I have a more recent example of using a park and ride in Denver to get to a Rockies game. We paid to park for about $5, then another $10 for my wife and I to use the light rail. It took about 45 minutes to reach the game including rail time and then walking from the station to the ball park. Also about $5 for the dramamine I have to take to use a train. (We had some more fun getting back, due to some bathroom issues and missed trains, but that's a whole other story and not the light rail's fault.) But regardless of THAT, we could have parked MUCH closer to the station, paid $15-20 to park, and saved about half an hour for the same amount of money. And also not be time-strapped to reach the station before a train left, or encounter a full train and have to wait for the next one (which also happened).
@Swiftbow
@Swiftbow 3 жыл бұрын
@@CaitlynWemyss The problem with the argument "more people should use mass transit more often" is that the people saying it USUALLY mean "people other than me." I'm (mostly) fine with mass transit being widely available for those who need it. I am NOT for being forced to use it, which IS a goal of many behind it. (Seriously, their advocates have put forth their policies at transit meetings I've been to.) Anyway, motion sickness primarily stems from movement that the brain doesn't expect or can't process right, like an equilibrium thing. So, if you're driving the vehicle, you feel nothing. Passenger seat is MOSTLY fine, because you can see and anticipate most of the what the driver does. Backseat is... variable. Sometimes it's okay, sometimes it SUCKS. (Rumble seat, which I tried once... no. I threw up.) The key part is being able to see turns and hills, etc. (Air on the face helps, too.) The light rail trains and buses have ads on the side, though, that make it harder to see through (plus you can't see out the front of the vehicle at all). That makes me sick. And forget about the side facing or rear facing seats. Good grief. (I also can't (well, shouldn't) ride spinning rides or rides that go backwards at amusement parks. Basic rollercoasters are tolerable.) Feelings of motion sickness start as light dizziness, to persistent dizziness, to outright nausea, and then to vomiting. It often takes a good hour or so to feel better after it hits. Dramamine helps (usually), but only to a point.

@@Swiftbow Depending on how you live, gas can be heavily subsidized too. Sometimes A LOT. So fairly comparing bus fares to price of gas is not that easy. It's very possible that your government subsidize less for your bus fare than your gas, which by your own logic would mean other people are paying more for your gas than your bus fares.

@fakecubed
@fakecubed 2 жыл бұрын
No, the way flat Earthers' minds operate is they find something that will make you look angry and ridiculous, and then troll you relentlessly with it, as a meta commentary on how you've elevated television scientists into high priests of a humanist cult. Funnily enough, as part of trolling you, they're doing actual, real science, which starts with questioning everything, and devising experiments to gather data, and not merely believing something because somebody told them it was so.
@benthomason3307
@benthomason3307 2 жыл бұрын
@@fakecubed I've spoken with enough flatheads to know that that's complete bullshit. If they were doing real science then they'd change their beliefs the moment somebody pointed out that Australians can't see Polaris. Or that shadows at sunset slowly climb up the sides of tall buildings, which means that the light source producing them, the sun, is moving down. Or that known airline flight paths make no sense on a flat disc earth. Take your pick, really. Also, The only reason you have for suspecting that the world outside your home country exists is because everyone else insists it does; are you going to start questioning that as well? Also, from what you've said, it sounds like flatheads don't actually think the Earth is flat, but only claim as much to rebel against society. Which is the definition of a bad faith argument.
