I went back and forth on Wrangler or 4Runner for months before purchasing. I went with the 4Runner for two main reasons: 1) As much as I like to think I spend a ton of time off-road, it accounts for maybe 1% of my driving miles. The 4Runner is just miles better than the Wrangler on pavement - especially if you have KDSS. 2) Reliability. No vehicle is perfect, but Toyota reliability is head, shoulders and torso above anything made by Fiat-Chrysler (or Stellantis as I think they are now called). Do I sometimes wish I had a solid front axle? Absolutely. Do I wish I could fit 35" tires from the factory without having to drop a few grand in modifications to make it happen? You betcha. Do I regret going with the 4Runner instead of the Wrangler? Not a chance.

It’s interesting to watch 4WD comparisons from both the UK & USA; in the USA they compare their local product with Toyotas, in the UK they compare their local products against Toyotas and nine times out of ten the local product wins - the one common theme is that both regional testing teams mostly put their products up against Toyota products which says a lot about how good Toyota 4WDs are.

When I traded in my Jeep I traded it for a 4Runner. That being said, My Jeep wasn't a wrangler. I had Jeep's version of a Cadillac, The Grand Cherokee. I feel the Grand Cherokee would go nearly anywhere my 4Runner will go. Mods for a Grand Cherokee isn't as available or easy to find as a 4Runner or Wrangler. What made my deciding factor to trade the Jeep was, I couldn't keep it out of the shop. It was always breaking down. I realized as much time it spent in the shop was equivalent to a whole month out of a year. Or another way to see it is I made one payment and didn't have it. Time to go. Reliability was my reason.

I don’t know which GC you had but I had a 2016 with the hemi and off road package. Closest you could get to a trail hawk before it was released. It’s off road ability was a joke. Doesn’t matter how you feel. I traded for a 4runner TRD. The GC was so bad, it’s an embarrassment to the Jeep brand. I also lost track of the number of times it was in the shop. The 4Runner is much easier to keep track of because it’s 0.

I went from a 4Runner to a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is very comparable to the 4Runner offroad. And for me, my 4Runner had quite a few problems while i owned it. One of the most annoying issues are failing front brake calipers. Pistons would seize every other year like clockwork, even if i purchased replacements directly from Toyota. But the biggest issue was frame rot. After a few years, my frame was very rusty way beyond surface rust. Eventually, it became a big issue, despite the fact that i powerwashed the entire undercarriage after every winter. On the other hand, my Jeep has had zero issues and no rust. I'll probably never go back to 4Runner again. The 5th gen is a joke, still using the ancient, inefficient 5-speed automatic transmission. The body is from 2009. Really Toyota?

As an old man I liked Fords growing up. Got mocked due to "Found on the roadside dead. Fix and repair daily." Now I'm hearing "Just empty every pocket" for Jeeps. I've researched deeply what I wanted last year for overlanding, longevity, reliability, etc. and got a 4Runner Off Road premium before the chip shortage. I need a daily driver also. Problem is Toyotas aren’t reliable off road. Daily driving yes, off road no. When crawling remote places, repairability is as, or more important than anything else. IFS can’t be fixed on the trail when you pop that cv axle, (unless you carry a spare axle around) and if you wheel it, you are going to break it. Ever loose your abs module in a 4 runner? Hard crawling tends to bash them into a fritz. And when they go, so does your four wheel drive, hi and low, with no way to get it back. It’s a bad time if your 13,000 feet up. There’s very little you can’t fix on a Jeep while in the dirt. And short of hitting the main computer with a hammer, nothing is going to kill your 4 wheel drive and leave you stranded on a mountain. 4 runner is a good daily driver for the pavement. But nothing stays in tact if you wheel remote places. I give Toyota the ON PAVEMENT reliably point. JEEP wins off road reliability all day.

Here's my take. If anyone would like to read, I grew up in a jeep household. Lifted jeeps rock crawling side by sides wheelers. Grew up out in the woods. My mom had a 07 jeep and it drove like shit stock took forever to heat up. Always had seal issues, transmission was replaced 2 times from the dealership when it went out. Had nothing but issues with suspension bolts loosening up after lift kit was installed. Had to do a bolt check every other day. Even took it to professionals to make sure nothing was wrong. Tires bumpers exc. Was built to wheel and it did so well when it wasn't being worked on. My first 1995 4runner was bought from a crackhead neighbor who needed money and I needed a vehicle. I absolutely did not want it but I needed a vehicle and it was cheap. Absolutely beat the piss out of it for about a year till some seals started going like oil cooler seals but I had 4 bald tires on it and I mean bald. A couple were showing wire they were that bald (I was 17 and broke) well I went smoking with some buddy's and we went to my buddy's property and it had no business climbing a hill as steep as it did with bald tires. Winding through trees in mirror to mirror fit while having to pin it to make it up a slick hill. From that day on I realized truly how capable a stock 4runner was even with bald tires. I now own 2 of them my daily driver is a 1995 Toyota 4runner 5 speed has the 3.0l 3vze motor and is built for overloading as I fish and travel to fish as the guy said in the video it is a mini rv. I have 8'6" musky rods that are 1 piece so it's extremely hard to travel and fish with them well the 4runner allows me to fit the rod on the ceiling while keeping ALL of my valuable gear inside my vehicle locked while I sleep on the rooftop tent. Having been around a jeep growing up my whole life being able to remove the top isn't that great. Honestly. I'm not against jeep but I know from winter driving conditions I'll drive. 4runner over a jeep in the winter all day long.

4Runner = reliability, space and comfort when going to Starbucks as well as light to medium offroading. Wrangler = Cant beat a dual solid axle set up and tech for offroading. Don't even try to argue this when it comes to hard/extreme rock crawling. Convertible.... None of the offroading in this video is close to pushing either of these vehicles to their true potential. An outback or practically any vehicle could do this with decent ground clearance.

Watched the video and the 'test' is pretty indicative of the type of trails/offroad I go on. Not real animal. I do like independent suspension. However, the active track I'm not familiar with and at one point the right front tire of the 4Runner was spinning and the truck was transferring power to the other wheels. That's a concern - Anyone have a suggestion as to how to resolve? i also like the extra towing capacity. This would be a 2nd vehicle for off-road fun only. Gas mileage of either is too low for my driving.

Guys you’re really not comparing apples to apples. I’ve owned both. Comfort on the road is owned by the 4Runner. Off road capability is owned by the Ruby. My Rubicon is the most capable off road street legal vehicle I’ve ever owned ….. but has very few manners on the road. Wind blows it all over. It wanders like a blind nomad. Then there are the electrical “issues” that seem to haunt all Chrysler products of late. Poor radio perception that actually varies from vehicle to vehicle…. The way that Bluetooth disconnects randomly with no rhyme or reason. The 4Runner could never compete with my jeeps locking differentials. But the comfort and QUIET of the 4Runner compared to the Ruby has the 4Runner the winner by far on the road…..and off. Just two very different vehicles with very different functions. Love them both but for very different reasons.

All of them take their Jeeps in for problems as often as an elderly person goes in for check ups... Not personal, just being candid from a unique perspective here in Dodge country... I also sold Carwash systems in 3 states for 10 years to Dealership Service departments, had many Service & Parts managers that I dealt with & they conveyed the same "reliability"... It can be done with simple spacers which takes 45 minutes... As far as reliability... No jeep guy wants to put that foot forward in comparison to 4Runners if he is really a jeep guy because it simply cant be made... I just like apple to apple comparisons... If someone is going to flaunt a vehicles capability, the Tires have to be apples to apples or its not even a proper comparison... I considered a Trail Boss myself but went for a Wrangler due to the fact the Wrangler had the convertible top, and also the size difference. The Wrangler is much easier to daily. I think you'll find that the size of the Silverado will be the biggest factor for you. It's got a lift, it's got a locker, nice aggressive tires, it's a beast, but it's tall, wide, and long. The jeep can go places the TB just won't fit. If you're going to take it out on trails, have it ceramic coated for protection. I didn't, and I have trail stripes I need to buff out on my Jeep (hurts to look at on a vehicle that's less than 6 months old and only 6k miles).

I went from a JKU to a 4Runner and don’t regret it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my jeep, but my wife didn’t find it comfortable to ride in and with 2 kids we needed more cargo space when going on week long trips. The Wrangler (IMHO) will always be the most capable with the solid front axle, OEM front locker, and sway bar disconnect, but they’ll also always be second fiddle in on-road ride comfort. Go to jeep and Toyota events and compare the number of rigs that get towed there on trailers and you’ll see why more people that do longer trips prefer Toyotas.

I had both the 5 gen 4runner, and now the jeep rubicon with the turbo 2.0. I'll admit I miss the 4runner, the drive of it but man was it horrible on gas. I'm in canada, I would get about 16L/100 km on city and highway... No difference. I had no lift, I had ko2s but stock wheel size. Another thing that pissed me off was to make my 4runner offroad ready aka again steel bumpers, lift, sliders, skid plates... I would have to spend another 10-15 grand easily. My rubicon 2.0 does 8-9L/100km highway and 11 in the city. The rubicon jeep feels so much more solid, well ya there a lot more metal. the rubicon came stock with skid plates, sliders and front and rear lockers. I know its a dodge fiat or w.e but ya it feels solid. The resale value for both are amazing in canada. Both rate at the top of resale for vehicles. I would say the 4runner has the better on road drive feel, but burns way more gas. It is also less offroad ready stock.. something to keep in mind.

The 4Runner is an excellent overlander plus some, but not having lockers, sway bar disconnects, and a winch really limits the amount of sketchy stuff I would do with it. 4Runner vs Wrangler is really apples and oranges to me. Maybe a lifted TRD and a JLU may be a little closer, but add the Rubicon package and performance will favor the Rubicon. That being said, I’ve never been in a Wrangler of any sort that will beat the ride and comfort of the 4Runner. They’re both incredible, but just a little too far apart for me to compare.

I think you said the T4R had 285/70's and was stock, how did you fit 285's on it, i thought it needed to be lifted for 285's?

I’d pick again my Gladiator over both. Bc for me I need the bed. If the 4Runner gets a 10/10 for Overlanding, then the Gladiator goes to 11. And losses of the break over and departure angles it causes doesn’t affect the trails I run. Between just these two, again the Jeep. Main reason- modifiability. Sure you can on the 4Runner, but Jeep is easier and more that you can do to it. For me, being able to customize your rig for trails you run and what you carry is one of the most important aspects of any offroader. 4Runner still a great rig. Hope Toyota doesn’t ruin it with next gen- add a few more gears and a bit more oomph under the hood and leave the rest alone.

@@BigYellow1500 so if no one likes the Jeep truck thing why did you buy one? I mean your comment was to dis the Jeep truck thing, not about its reliability, and now you say you bought one? Man don’t argue with your wife. Lol. If true, that sucks, but I have 33K+ miles in 13 months, including about 12 blue and some mild black level trails a year, and no issues. Lots of others I know personally with no issues. You can find any veh that some people have had issues with. My dad has had a number of issues with his Toyota Venza. My last rig was a Land Rover, not known for reliability, and I had 5 years of no issues until it was in an accident. So 🤷‍♂️. Hope you find something that you like and is reliable. 🤙

Jeep Wrangler should get another 5 points to Gryffindor for having more country songs about it. Take that, Toyota!

On my 3rd 4runner in 30 yrs. Can't beat their reliability and resale period. My 2019 still drives like the day I took delivery, not a rattle or squeak of any kind.

I bought a jeep gladiator rubicon a few days ago. I wanted the 4runner trd pro but it was getting harder to come by and didn't want to wait. I've also ordered a bronco but haven't even made into production and been waiting forever. I love em all but I'll stick with jeep for now and maybe buy a trd pro 4runner later

I think that's called off road, but here there are bush trails, there is a reason why I see alot of Jeeps in the Yukon😁 I have almost 190,000 Yukon miles on my '14 Rubicon 😂 I've done preventative maintenance over the years. The main search and rescue vehicle I depend on besides my 96 SportSKS 144" to reach people in distress during the winter😁 Keeping my Jeep Running is like keeping a SkiDoo Tundra250 maintained. Strait Axels, winches(front and rear) are simpler and required when your here in Ak

Great Video y'all love both these Vehicles I couldn't choose so I went and saved 48.000 bucks and got me a 4.0 Jeep grand cherokee WJ with solid axles front and back yeah might have to spend some money on some lockers but I still saved a bunch of cash and still have all the room and comfort I could ask for..

We do wildlife filming - lots of it. Have tested both vehicles to their extremes over the years, and when it's just you and mountain lions and tigers and bears, oh my - and a few hundred thousand dollars of gear, you will choose a 4Runner for it's real-world capability and reliability every time. That said, Jeeps can be oh so much fun when that's all that is at stake!
