This is exactly the modification I've been looking for. Many thanks for the video.😀

Welding a "Tee" on the end of the pin would help in their removal . Rust and a heavy mower is going to stress that hinge ! Enjoyed your video....more projects , please !

I can't thank you enough for posting this video!! I recently purchased a used 5 x 8 utility trailer similar to this one. I needed to be able to remove the ramp. I plan on using the trailer primarily to haul 10' long kayaks. So.. i need them to hang off the back. Your idea set me on my way. I used my Dremel SM20-03 Saw-Max to cut off the weld on one side. Then.. i was able to slide the ramp off the pin on the other side. I then bought a bolt and nut that was about the same size as the pin and put it in for when i need to use the ramp. Thank you again so much for the idea about cutting off the weld to remove the pin. It worked for me like a charm!!

@@patdugan3563 Yep.. made use of the trailer more versatile in that I can use it with or without the ramp.

Great share, I almost created myself an embarrassing amount of work by cutting the hinges completely off and replacing with new hinges that allowed removal of the gate.

Old post but thanks. I have a small trailer with three ring hinges in three places. Ramp is heavy as heck for a small 5x10 trailer and want to be able to remove it. It was free and will need some work and this gives me an idea how to fix it. I hope you do more of these vids. They're great for us DYI guys

Nice video and solution to the problem. I like the removable pin idea because it allows you to pull the pins and yank the gate off easily as a one man operation. I’ve been contemplating building a removable ramp on a trailer I’m fabricating and I like this idea. I need to fab some stops to keep it in the upright position also which will be simple pins and round stock.

Nice fab weld job 👍 on mine the hinge shaft is slightly bent 15 degree on one side and on the other its drilled out with cotter pin through it as well ,kinda double secure it while each end acts as a stop ! Same result just a little different method 😂👍

On my old trailer I added a third hinge in the middle and ran some bar stock all the way through all three hinges. I capped one end so couldn't come off and lock pin through the other end of bar stock to keep it from sliding out. That way there was no interference with the hinge to lay the gate flat. If I wanted to remove gate I simply removed lock pin and slid the bar stock out of the barrels.

Nice elegant solution. Any other hinge swapping solution would have meant not being able to mount/dismount it with the (obviously heavy) gate resting in the trailer. You've given me a simple quick-release solution to as a method for swapping gate for hinged ramps. Thanks.

I realize this is an older video. And I may add, your solution does work well. But a mere bolt, or two, threaded through the frame could do the exact same thing. Since the pins have to come out to remove the gate/ramp, simply drill holes in the frame on the side of the hinge(s) and thread them for a bolt that would stop the rod from being removing and that would keep the ramp in place until you removed the bolt(s)... Thumbs Up!

You could also weld a pipe upright on both sides, on the outside. Pull the retainer. Pull your pin. Stick the retainer back in the pin. Drop this into the upright pipe. All done in less than a second. And now you don't have a loose pin, and retainer laying around, to get knocked off into grass, gravel, lose dirt, etc, and get lost. :)

Thanks for the video. I can't figure out how to get my gate off short of cutting off the whole hinge. I'm going to try and cut of the "closed" end, remove the grease fitting on the other end and see if I can pound it out. What a pain. You would think they would have faced the hinges in the same direction as well and allowed for the gate to simply slide on and off. Made in China, I presume. Anyway, this helps. Thank you again.

I like the sure trac brand utility trailers, on average $200 cheaper, way straighter, way better paint, spare tire mount included, springs on ramp. Sure trac beats the pants off the Lowe’s and Home Depot trailers

Oh, it looked like you could pull the rod out from either direction...wasn't sure how it wouldn't vibrate out towards the outside...
@codymartin67043 жыл бұрын
I know it's a little late but a piece of rod added to the end of the hinge pin like a T would have been cool

So I am assuming this wasn't the type of gate that slides off the pins in one direction. My trailer gate comes off easily wit a lift and a slide.
@lancehenthorn177 жыл бұрын
Cadenchanchan if it was me I would have made to the style of your trailer and mine as well! Much easier in my opinion. This has been over engineered.

Built trailers with both you guys style of gate hinges as far back as 25 years ago. Been working for 25 years why change them.... lol have no clue what this dude in the video was thinking with this awkward set up.
@DiscoFang6 жыл бұрын
My first reaction was the same as all you guys, why not change the mirror-imaged hinges to same-direction hinges. However given the obviously substantial weight of the gate, it would be essentially impossible to mount and dismount it single-handedly. This is a somewhat simple and elegant solution.

Thanks! How specific should I get? In this video, I was burning .035 ER70S-6 gas shielded wire from National Standard. My welding supply store gives me a good discount on that brand. I put it through a few tests when I bought my first spool of it and it is quite strong.

@kevinhightower61407 жыл бұрын
you over engineered that, all you had to do was stand the gate up and slide it to the right and off it comes
@WideVisionMetalFab7 жыл бұрын
And the other side needs to be slid to the left. So how do I slide one half of the ramp left and one half right?
@kevinhightower61407 жыл бұрын
when you cut through that weld, just weld it back on the opposite side, it would match the left and would slide off and on whenever needed
@coypatton31607 жыл бұрын
Wide Vision Metal Fab not real difficult. You cut the weld from one pin drive it out. Put it back in so both pins slide the same direction the reweld the pin.
@WideVisionMetalFab7 жыл бұрын
The pipes that create the hinges are arranged such that one set is inside the other set. I would have had to cut one pair of hinges completely off and flip it around. It would have taken longer to cut the welds off then the few minutes it did to weld on a ring and drill a couple holes. Then, there would be problem of the tail gate bouncing out of the hinges as you travel down these country dirt roads.
@coypatton31607 жыл бұрын
Wide Vision Metal Fab I could not see that hinges were put in the way you indicate in your response. As for the gate bouncing off, the gate should be secured in some manner any time it is on the trailer and the trailer is moving on any road. Anything else is irresponsible on the part of the person pulling the trailer. Even if flat on the trailer deck a strap should be securing it for the safety of other drivers. This would mean if it did not have a means of being secured in an upright position when it entered your shop it should be present before it leaves your shop.
