I soldered a beep-beep chiming relay to the oil pressure light on the dash board. In that way I get an acustic warning when the pressure is too low. I had the beep-beeping at idle or at very low revs, and whe this did happen, I changed the pressure sensor on the engine and that ended the problem. But I've kept the acustic warning... !

Why does the oil pump inner and outer need to be marked? Inner rotated independently of outer no?

What kind of milage is on this engine, and can regular oil changes as well as the annual service help in avoiding advanced oil pump wear?

+Paul B I have no idea of the mileage of this vehicle. The 300tdi could easily achieve 350 000 mile easily without too many problems if good quality oils are used and the vehicle serviced properly. I can say when an oil pump will wear up however.

My D2 TD5 has lowish oil pressure at hot idle (0.8 bar when stopping at signals just off a motorway run) on my VDO gauge. The warning light never comes on, but at 145,000 miles, should I assume this is bearing wear? Would there be any point checking out the oil pump/relief valve or just ignore it?

I'd not ignore it. Is the gauge accurate?

+Land Rover Toolbox Videos I believe the gauge is accurate (VDO sender and gauge, Tee'd to stock sender & idiot light). I would suspect worn main bearings , but that repair would probably be more than the value of the vehicle. I could possibly replace the oil pump and relief valve at the next service, but that at least another £500 as the TD5 pump is part of the ladder frame. It might be more cost-effective to put the money in the bank toward a future remanufactured engine. OTOH, I once fitted gauges to a friend's old GM 5L V8 to find it had such low hot idle oil pressure it would not move the needle of rest. Obviously a low-stress engine, but it did soldier on for many more years

I've not looked at the Td5 internally yet however most engine oil pressure readings are taken from the galley before feeding the crank. I'll take a look at the engine data when I get a minute. What viscosity are you using?

+Land Rover Toolbox Videos I have the D2 serviced at an independent 4X4 specialist (in business 25+ yrs) so all I know is it is semi-synthetic. The TD5 sender attaches to the rear of the oil-filter housing at the back of the engine. I found specs for TD5 pressure - 3.0 bar at idle cold (which I have, or near enough) and hot 1.5~3 bar @ 3500rpm - which I also have and more. The idiot light triggers at 0.2~0.6 bar. Mine never even flickers - the lowest I see is 0.8 and again only at the very first stop (idle) after pulling off the motorway. There is no spec given for hot idle. I think the TD5 oil pump - while not that difficult to get to compared to the 300tdi, is a bit over-engineered :-)

Oil pressure when cold is a little bit of a red herring but if you are using 5W30 then it is looking to see if it is pumping the thinner oil successfully. Test is always engine will at running temperature that way we can see when the oil is thinned that it will still pump at a specified pressure. I would have thought as a gut feeing that the oil pump may need attention. Would i be wrong?

Marking the pump gears with a scratch is a terrible idea, don't do it - the damaged metal can then score a groove into the cover.

Why does it need to be marked at all? Inside rotates independently of outer.... Obviously I’m missing something.?
