It's fine showing how it's done when it's out on the bench or when the wing is off but what I really want to know is how to go about it when it's buried in the engine bay under metal pipes with no room even for your hand let alone turning space for a spanner !

I bled my system as per the Disco 1 manual and didn't have any air bubbles. The sequence for tightening the tiebar fixings are different too. Ps. the tip from this man i do recommend is when changing oil filters, use grease instead of oil on installation and the filter won't come loose in service.
@ButchE30M3S145 жыл бұрын
Hot tip: Put a silicone tube/hose on the bleed nipple on top of the steering box that goes into an oil catch pan before disconnecting everything, then start the engine. The oil will be pumped out trough the hose, once you only get air shut engine down and your oil bath will be reduced greatly.

Excellent video! I just have one question... during installation of steering box, I assume steering wheel and wheels are straight ahead...THEN you reinstall u joints onto spline of steering column and steering box spline...but Then you centralize the drop arm,,,does swinging this drop arm a few inches during “centralizing “ turn the steering column thus throwing the steering wheel out of whack? Pls advise, Thx

Absolutely smashing ... reached a new level with that one...really smooth and flowing with no dead spots ... well done chap ... Have you tried the 2.8 box yet?

soon. welding on the rear end then a fresh A frame ball joint. Down to the MOT then we can get on with some road testing and a fresh suspension set up.

Just wondering I have a 2002 Discovery is the process very similar as I can’t find a steering box change on a discovery 2... and to be fair these are probable the best videos I’ve found on KZbin! The only thing I cant really see on mine is the pipes at the top but I’m sure there’s a way. As a separate question not related after removal I want to clean and recon the steering box as a spare but what’s the best way to clean and degrease the unit? I have a few things to recon now but there far to dirty and I just can’t seem to get them clean.

I'd wouldn't bother TBH.

The pump works ok, the steering is good, but the pump almost got stuck last week. The bearing felt very dry and moving badly. I managed to inject some grease under the dust shield behind the pulley bracket, but I saw that there is a bearing seal there, so most of grease injected didn't even reach the bearing. It's a pity to replace good working pump because I cannot service this bearing... =)
@trailerfitter26 жыл бұрын
Okay i get what you are say. Pity it's not repairable but if the bearing is dry then the pump is unserviceable and will need replacing.

Hello, I own a defender 130 1998 300tdi and the steering box is leeking, need a new one. Will the one you suggest fit? Also the link on description is not working. Also I live in Australia so if you know where I can get the steering box from please let me know.
@chrishiggins18289 жыл бұрын
+FOODwithRowan Chef Hi, sorry I don't know where you can get parts for Land Rover Defenders in Oz. Yes the one in the video will fit as you can see. There are a couple of different steering boxes and these can be identified by the amount of bolts on the top plate. The most common is the 4 bolt. Regards from the UK.
@chrishiggins18289 жыл бұрын
+FOODwithRowan Chef I'd also like to add if your Defender is original and not been messed with it would be advisable to order a steering box off the VIN number. Not all steering boxes have the same pipe fitting threads the same.
@rowannancarrow69199 жыл бұрын
+Chris Higgins thanks heaps. I may have to order from bearmach and ship it. Or rebuild mine. Thanks again

Its never helpful if you do stuff on the bench and miss out the things that people struggle with. PLEASE SHOW US UNDOING THINGS IN THE VEHICLE where space is limited and radiator hoses and all sorts of other things are in the way.
