Cab ride on the intercity services between Utrecht - Schiphol - Arnhem - Nijmegen and Amsterdam. Today I have an extra long video for you guys. Two weeks ago there was a lot of waiting in the shunting video and I know that can be boring to look at. But it's also part of my job. On my channel I'd like to give you a full presentation of my job and that includes shunting.
But... to make a compromise I'm going to take you on a 3.5 hour drive through the country. Most of my shift I recorded that day on my GoPro. I hope you will like it.
0:00 Utrecht Centraal
We start our journey in Utrecht and take the intercity service to Schiphol Airport.
2:40 Utrecht Zuilen
4:50 Maarssen
7:20 Breukelen
12:42 Abcoude
14:10 Amsterdam Holendrecht
15:15 Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena
On our way to Schiphol we have a stopover in Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena that will take a few minutes. This is done because there's too much traffic going on between Arena/Duivendrecht and Schiphol Airport.
24:51 Amsterdam RAI + Amsterdam Zuid
32:00 Schiphol Airport
After Schiphol the train number will be changed to a number with a 7 in front of the normal train number. This means the train is empty and is to be shunted away to Hoofddorp Opstel (train yard) in this case.
40:10 Hoofddorp + Hoofddorp Opstel
In Hoofddorp Opstel our train is split in two. On our way back to Schiphol Airport we have only 6 carriages left of the 10 we had on our first ride. Rush hour is over, so that's why we shorten the trains. Less energy consuming and less train managers needed on the train as well.
49:09 Schiphol Airport
58:30 Amsterdam Zuid
1:03:51 Amsterdam RAI
1:06:24 Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena
At Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena we need to wait for a few minutes again. This is because the IC's between Amsterdam and Eindhoven run every ten minutes. To fit this train in that schedule it needs to wait a little at Arena. Later departure from Schiphol Airport is no option because there's too much other traffic going on there. It's a big puzzle.
Between Bijlmer Arena and Utrecht you can see loads of trains passing by. We have 4 sprinters, 10 IC's, 1 international train and 2 freight trains in each direction every hour between these stations. Our train gives a perfect connection to the train in the Eindhoven direction. Accept for now, because we have a very small delay. But o worries for the passengers. The next IC to Eindhoven is there in just a few minutes. Love that! :)
1:13:15 Amsterdam Holendrecht
1:14:18 Abcoude
1:19:57 Breukelen
1:22:23 Maarssen
1:25:28 Utrecht Zuilen
1:27:18 Utrecht Centraal
1:34:39 Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn
1:37:34 Bunnik
1:39:27 Driebergen-Zeist
1:45:44 Maarn
1:51:50 Veenendaal-De Klomp
1:55:30 Ede-Wageningen
2:01:53 Wolfheze
2:03:28 Oosterbeek
2:04:53 Arnhem Centraal
We continue our journey to Arnhem and Nijmegen. At our arrival in Arnhem we receive an emergency call from the train dispatcher telling there is a person walking beside the tracks between Arnhem and Dieren. Not our path, but because of the emergency call you can hear me hitting the brakes a little. Why? Well, as off this point the driver must drive on sight with a maximum speed of 40km/h.
On the rest of the journey you can enjoy the great views and the many kilometers passing our window.
2:10:50 Arnhem Zuid
2:12:48 Elst
2:15:45 Nijmegen Lent + Nijmegen
On our way back to Amsterdam we run the 3000 IC instead of the 3100. This intercity makes a stop at Veenendaal-De Klomp instead of Driebergen-Zeist.
2:24:06 Elst
2:26:00 Arnhem Zuid
2:29:45 Arnhem Centraal
2:35:20 Oosterbeek
2:36:42 Wolfheze
2:40:46 Ede-Wageningen
2:46:25 Veenendaal-De Klomp
This way both stations have a 30 minute IC-connection during the whole day. Also we pass Utrecht again, but now you'll see we won't make a stop at Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena.
2:55:10 Maarn
2:58:12 Driebergen-Zeist
3:00:34 Bunnik
3:03:56 Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn
3:05:38 Utrecht Centraal
3:11:00 Utrecht Zuilen
3:13:33 Maarssen
3:15:48 Breukelen
3:21:10 Abcoude
3:22:35 Amsterdam Holendrecht
3:23:30 Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena
3:24:34 Duivendrecht
3:26:49 Amsterdam Amstel
Then we stop at Amsterdam Amstel. On that specific line we have 6 IC's, 4 sprinters, 1 international and 2 freight trains an hour per direction. Just over 2 tracks. The smallest interruption on the tracks causes huge problems for our schedules. But at about 95% of the time our trains run perfectly on time!
3:30:13 Amsterdam Muiderpoort
3:33:40 Amsterdam Centraal
I hope you enjoyed this very long ride. Next week there will be a WARP SPEED video of this one. Enjoy your weekend! Cheers!
