Impulse Games - • Increase Your Dog's Se...
Leave it (tug) - • Impulse Control Game F...
This game is a phenomenal game for dogs who have prey drive, aggression issues, reactivity, unruley, crazy hyper dog.
I'm not promoting you to play tug with your dog and let them rip you around with the toy, I'm encouraging you to train your dog a leave it (drop the toy) and then to play give and take with them to train their brain and their body.

I did this with my border collie as a puppy since it was the best way to tire him out. I had no idea it was called a flirt pole, I just called it hillbilly dog fishing

Nice! I just wish someone would post a video of someone working with a high energy dog with no impulse control from the beginning. Every video I watch seems to involve a dog that is already trained to drop it, leave it, etc. I volunteer at a local animal shelter, and try to work with the dogs that have these issues to make them adoptable. It's very hard to find any videos of people working with difficult dogs at the beginning of their training process.

Using your body to block the dog from Chasing or a shorter pole. Or not use the tug pole until they reliably know to leave

The dog has to know its basic commands first. My GSD female is very energetic and has really high prey drive along with impulse control issues. I started after she learned her basic commands with a tug toy. Once she learned to leave the tug while we walked I would then have her in down throw the tug and then command her to get it. It took me several weeks of consistency in the basics, then the tug before I moved to the flirt pole. Once she got the tug game down really well I dragged just a rope at first, then slowly brought in my homemade pole. I even can use a long branch with leaves at the end. It just takes time especially teaching the basic commands first.

Loved the video, these two pups looks so happy and obedient!! I play daily with my APBT girl (almost two years old) and the flirt pole but I got kind of a problem, she is like obsessed with it and every time we go out she guides me straight to the bush where I hide the flirt pole in a public garden... she pulls me there there like crazy then sits in front of the bush, waiting for me to get the toy out and play... desperation in her eyes. Most of the times she will not even pee, poo or do anything else unless we play with that damn thing...

Thanks this was great, I like the idea of the whip for a more gentler pole as opposed to pvc pipe, plus I think the different types of poles allows for them to experience more variety especially with impulse control. I am really grateful for the links too. Blessings and nice dogs!

This is great! I just got mine and she tends to have issues dropping an item she wants and leaving it. I guess she does listen to me because I was playing with her and she actually dropped it when I told her too. So excited to see how her responses quicken!

My little 4 month old border collie girl thanks you! ^_^ I'm glad I came across your training videos before others, it has given me a good start with her training (at 2 months old she was sitting and able to recall... sometimes). Now I just need to figure out if I want to get her into agility training at some point (mostly for fun, not for competition).

I always say go get it and then when they actually catch it I mark and reward ‘good job ‘ and then have them bring it to me for the reward that way everything is on cue including catching it bringing it to you dropping it all that stuff

Great dogs, I had to stop doing this as my dog would get too out of control too fast, or at some point she would get too wild. I hope to get back to it because she did love it but I started teaching her more complex games with the ball and frisbee, she likes to paddle things or double bump them as she is half cattle dog/border collie. She becomes a 50 pound bullet so I rather she get that nutsy high collision crazies out of her by herself, keeps everyone and everything safe-lol. She tires out fast enough since she knows a lot of commands and she loves to jump in the pool and I make her wait at a distance. I will try the whip, may be easier for me to handle it too, I had been using a rope on a stick. Thanks and keep sharing I love watching what you do with your dogs.

Hello Kristen, I'm getting a Border Collie puppy this April, and I want to start training as soon as possible (by training I mean cool tricks, like play dead, bow, sit pretty, hug, weave, twirl, spiderman [ super collie's video on Zak George's channel has 'spiderman' if you dont know what that is], jumping over arms, and also doing agility) and was wondering if you knew a good age to start teaching those kind of tricks, because I know that some tricks can cause joint issues if started at to young of age. Also, if its a girl, I'm gonna name her Nuna, and yes I mean Nuna, not Luna, Luna is too common. And if it's a boy, I'm gonna name him Lumi, which is short for Luminous.

An easy way to tell if a trick is okay for a puppy to do, is to ask yourself if it is a behavior that the puppy would do naturally. For example sitting, lying down (=play dead), and walking in circles are naturally displayed behaviors that you're simply giving a name to. On the other hand, doing a handstand is not something you'll ever see your puppy doing under natural circumstances. Their bodies are not designed to carry so much weight on only their front legs, so you should wait for your dog to be full grown (at 1 1/2 to 2 years), before expecting something so difficult from your dog (but I believe most videos showing how to teach this trick also mention this. Jumping over very small obstacles is fine for a puppy, but you should be careful not to overdo it, and definitely not try to test how high your pup can go (exactly how high and how much is acceptable is a much debated topic that no one can agree on). Personally, I wouldn't let a puppy jump higher than the lowest part of their chest. If by "agility", you meant the non-jumping aspects (like tunnels), those have no age restrictions. Have fun with your puppy~

I have an australian cattle dog mix that'll herd and nip at kids if I let her run off. Will this impulse control training help her with that? I've noticed her control herself by teaching her "leave it", "here" (focusing on me instead of the kids), and "whoa: (e-collar trained so she'll focus on me at range). It works well enough for my purposes, but I don't 100% trust her around kids without me constantly paying attention.

How would you recommend getting a dog with 0 toy drive to use a flirt pole? My dog has over the top food drive but no toy drive and I'd really like to use a flirt pole to help with exercising him and impulse control. He is reactive on leash and I've struggled with building impulse control with him. He knows basics (sit, stay, come, heel, up, down, off, etc) but often after so long can't hold himself back from breaking the command to get what he wants.

I just watched a video where a guy tied a bag with treats inside to the end of the pole. I'm not sure if there's a reason not to do that? but it makes sense for food dogs.

If he’s breaking a stay every time you either had too much criteria or went too fast.

I tried this some years ago, but it didn't take the dog long to figure out that grabbing the pole itself and holding it still is the fastest way to catch the toy.

@@nicoleminiuk I got a reactive cattle pup too. The flirt pole is great. The only time he ignores dogs and other triggers is when playing with the flirt pole. He stays engaged until it gets put away. Just be careful with the pole with a young pup to not hurt himself.
