I had a dog that taught another dog how to sit. I was delaying the treats to try to get a puppy to sit with another dog. The first dog had sit. But the puppy hadn't. So the first dog figured out what I wanted and then put its paw on the back of the puppy when I said, "sit" and then the puppy sit and then the dog looked up at me all proud and I gave them both a treat.

It's a very cool learning modality. There's a trainer named Claudia Fugazza who has a whole training method based on the dog imitating a behavior demonstrated by the trainer that takes this concept to a new level. Watching her videos blows my mind; it's amazing.

Isn't the show a bit outdated though? I mean, I imagine some of the advice is still considered right today, but some things like the whole alpha beta omega thing are now considered incorrect I think. I'd be really interested to hear someone's opinion who has a modern education in this field!

@@SadLittlePumpkin Oh definitely a bit outdated but a lot of it still stands bar the dominance concept. But despite it being outdate the advice given is still a whole lot better than other advice out there *cough* Cesar Milan. I think for a lot of people this is a good starting point of course backed up with other sources from their own research

yes, but not the alpha beta idea that was originally thought. It was debunked by the same man that came up with it when they realised that wild wolves behave very differently to captive ones. when humans put a pack together, those wolves have to come up with a way to live together in an unatural setting. In the wild they pair up and create their own pack together. The parents are the leaders and the pups can go off on their own when ever they want.

Border collies arent THE smartest breed. They're one of the smartest breeds, yes. German shepherds are extremely smart too. I've got two of them. Don't be quick to judge which breed is smarter than others :) they're all intelligent in their own ways.

@@aliequestrian1301 I think they're referring to the general top 10 smartest dog breeds info out there, where the Border Collie was ranked number one by some dude named Stanley Coren. Poodle was number 2 and German Shepherd number 3. I find myself a bit dubious of that ranking though, since the Belgian Malinois, one of the absolute smartest breeds in existence, isn't even in that top 10 while the Rottweiler is... so, hmm. @@animeloverxx8865 all I can say is I raised a lab/border collie from a puppy and I probably won't recommend any herding breed to new owners (especially not with young children) it can be done but for my family mouthing was a serious issue. My dogs border collie mom was a amazing dog who lived in a house with young children but I wouldn't recommend for new owners (or really anyone without a lot of experience and determination 😂) if you're seriously looking for ways to convince them not to I'd tell them a little about the exercise requirements of even a BC mix, and yes REQUIREMENTS. if my dogs doesn't get at least a half hour of intense play in the morning he will get very destructive. He gets another half-hour before bed too. Also, because of the border collie in that mix socialization is very important (without it the dog could become scared/aggressive towards dogs/people.)

Hm. I do need to work on Drop It with my greyhound. He's the champ of Leave It, but has a possessive streak when he takes something. I know how to train this but just haven't had the energy to do it (chronic illness). This video gave me a firm reminder. I'll put it on my daily to-do list.

There's a lot in here about hierarchy being an outdated tactic for teaching dogs. But, I had three border collies at once and they definitely had a hierarchy. I think, as long as you apply it in a way that works and is not demeaning to the dog, it is a perfectly fine method of training.

When we got our dog she was a pup, she is a pit and mastiff mix. I did not want to have to deal with a food aggression at all. So we started off just days after we got her we would put down the food and she was forced to watch us root around in the food and only allowed to go eat after we left and gave an OK command. We have a very very good doggy but she has some really bad habits. Im still thankful we did this food training as i can, to this day, reach down and take a steak out of her mouth. It has also made it very easy if we catch her chewing on something we can reach in and have no fear of her biting down. I knew it was really important to have that control when it came to having a large dog. She looks like a Pitty but is 100lbs, she could easily do some damage if we didn't have that training done.
