think we could talk for a whole day straight , wish time wasn't a factor. I want to say thank you for doing everything you do, your patience and passion is so inspiring (beyond words now). the amount of time, work, energy you put into doing all of this, thank you so much for making these helpful videos. I wanted to share something that you may or may not know about, in my experience this has been a game changer but it may not work for everyone. I have been training a VERY "food motivated" dog. First i will ask her to sit/lay down/stay and let her see that i have set down a small treat near her. If she leaves it alone she gets a separate treat. I tell her to leave the treat alone and proceed giving various commands. I usually just practice an extended "stay" and try to see how but if i walk my dog to another area she will remember that the treat is still there. Always giving EXTRA treats for as long as she continues to listen and leave the treat she knows about alone. For me personally this has been the first sort of "stepping stone" to playing the game we all know and love called "how long can i get you to pay attention and listen". It's hard to explain so many concepts with so many words but I hope that anyone reading this will think about this approach and maybe help me to explain or brainstorm ideas. Thanks again Mr. Zak George.

I love this breakdown on teaching stay at the door. My 3-month-old puppy immediately wants to dart out the door in the morning for his first potty of the day. With your step by step training methods, he now sits and waits for me to open the door and looks at me once it's all the way open as if to say "okay mom, can we go now?" I love it and it's all thanks to you Zak! :)

I had the best dog ever. I swear he knew many words, and I didnt knowingly teach him. He had the best recall. He would see a squirrel and start to chase, Id call him and he'd immediately come back. We lived with some other dogs at one point, and a female border collie liked to start little fights. Soon as Id hear them, Id call him and mid squabble he'd come. He knew all sorts of things that I never technically taught him, he just knew. He knew, wait, the difference between go to the tractor or go to the truck. He knew all his toys, red ball, green bone, moose, frog. He knew to go outside and get his piggy that was outside for a few days, knew right where it was and brought it inside. He was amazing. I sure miss Pete, my bff. Gsd/Border collie mix.

we had a scary encounter yesterday with my small dog. we went for a walk yesterday evening and were playing fridbee on a long lead (she is still a puppy so I dont fully trust her off leash). A woman came up and started calling my dog to her “come here” she continued to do so for 3 minutes persistently even after I told her that I dont want my dog to approach. I told my pup to stay and she did so! Thanks to you Zak these training videos of yours are very helpful!!

In the same position here, but our puppy is 4 months old and from day 1,we started watching Zaks guides to train our doggo and I consider myself lucky untill now, because our puppy is learning commands. I'm concious that our dog would not be like Inertia, because we don't have that much time and we're not wise enough, but I think she is happy, and I'm too,so thank you Zak very much for everything, straight outta Romania! Bless!

Wait is one of the easiest things to teach a dog imo. I'm dog sitting for someone currently and taught all 3 of their dogs to sit (which they already new) and wait for me to put the food down and not go for it until i give them the ok. Any time they get up before I tell them I just lift the bowl back up and the immediately get what they did wrong and sit back down. Though I don't think all of them would be going at doing it for a longer amount of time.

Why use stay as a command when you could use an implied stay? My dog is not allowed to break a stand or sit or lie down until I give him his release word. I personally use stay as an emergency/on-a-dime command, or a verbal marker to reinforce the behavior when I know he may be susceptible to break a stay (like standing on my bed ready to launch himself off when I walk out the door). If he breaks a stationary command, I correct verbally and bring him back to the same spot. So I don’t have to keep saying “stay” to make sure he does, he just simply doesn’t move from a position until I give him the okay to. Free shaping is wonderful to help with this!
