For your noise in the tower gearbox, many times the drive will set up harmonics in pumps and fans that cause noise. One B&G pump rep called it "cogging". Most drives will let you skip over frequency areas that cause issues. So just play with drive in manual control and record the troublesome frequency's and exclude the drive from operating in these areas. Good job figuring out what happened and following trail of the illusive "maintenance man/ service work creator". I used deal with a building that had the cooling basin was the lowest point in the system, one power blink and a large percentage of the tower water was on the ground and the tower pumps were trying to pump air. Enjoy you time at the service trade!

Excellent, Thanks for that tip, it seemed to be more noticeable in the mid 20HZ - 30HZ range . Makes sense 👍

The shaft on that motor on tower 1 looked a bit wobbly. Thanks for the video bud

I think it’s the shaft key and anti-seize making it look that way, I was wobbling too up there! Thanks Eric !

Great Video. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice weekend. Why is cooling Tower have alot water like pool ?

The Basin collects the cooled condenser water being circulated through the condenser loop, the pump draws from the bottom of Basin 100% liquid to avoid air cavitation . Thanks for the question 👍

there is a simple solution of putting a reverse trap on the end of that line to keep it full of water and not overflowing your tower or draining your sump when the pump starts up

There may be a check valve sticking the more I thought about it. Thanks for the suggestion too 👍

Sounds like the gearbox is crapped out? Or a bearing in there going bad. Perhaps it has been low on oil before, and there is a missaligment of the gears?

Great video. What do yo think of those ABB variable frequency drives? Reason i ask is because i work on a chiller at an ice rink as well as a big high school, and they both have those same drives, but they have been very problematic. More so the ones at the high school than the ice rink. The school chiller is a carrier unit and the cooling tower is a BAC Baltimore Air Coil brand. I have also worked on the Evapcos as well. What i like about the BAC cooling tower is the fan motors are right inside the tower, and use a belt and pully to turn the blade which i think is way better than that drive shaft system that evapco uses like the one here in this video. Now dont get me wrong, changing those bearings on the bac towers can be a pain especially if the bolts are rusty. I have did many. The ice rink chiller is made by Cimco Toromont, and uses R 717 Amoina for the refrigerent, and glycol for the secondary coolant that is chilled and pump through the tubing in the rink floor. These chillers can be a pain. Also they are not that good at removing the humidity like a standard ac unit will do. You have to have a stand alone dehumidification system with a chiller. The ice rink has a Munters brand dehumidifaction unit. Lots to these systems. Takes people with good knowledge and dedication to keep them maintained.

There are T-shirts available with "I'm not to be truffled with" "Michael says the phrase when he sets rules and people follow them blindly. He also says, "No matter how I look at this, I am in the wrong. And I have looked at this thing like 100 different ways, from my point of view, from their point of view, 98 others, and bottom line: I am in the wrong. I'm the bad guy"."
