Transfer case Leak?

My dads Jeep Rubicon has a transfer case that keeps running dry. There are no external leaks, and we are not sure where the fluid is going, but no matter how much ATF we add to the transfer case the fluid leaks out somewhere. Is this a transfer case leak? Let's remove the np241J from the Jeep and figure out what is going on.

My transfer case is leaking . Its been sitting for a while without running is came back from out of town and there a nice puddle of gear oil in the drive way under the transfer case . Im taking it to AMaco transmission s

If you already pulled the transfer case out than the hard part is done. Taking the transfer case apart and replacing seals, resealing the case halves is really not difficult at all. Transfer cases are pretty simple.

In this case, no. There’s a plug that came loose. No amount of additives is going to fix that.

How difficult is just to replace the transmission output shaft seal. I think thats my problem. Hopefully not as bad as your dad's problem here.

A lot easier. You still have to remove the transfer case, but that’s as far as you have to go. With the transfer case out or the way the seal will be right there.

Excuse me but where exactly did you have transmission fluid leaking from? My 86 bronco is leaking from its connection of the transmission to the case and it has probably caused the inside of the case to be torn to shreds but I would like to know if this might be the same problem as I’m having or if I might have a different problem

The fluid was coming up through the splined shaft and overfilling the transmission. When this happens the fluid would come out of the vet tube for the transmission.

There is a plug inside the input shaft. You have to tear down the entire transfercase and replace the plug. It sounds worse than it is.

@@EmbarkWithMark thanks for the video... Is the "plug" different from the seal for the transfer case? Sound very similar to what we are having happen on our 94 F150.

@@BLong-if7dv You are welcome. The plug and the seal are different. The plug goes in the transfercase where the input shaft goes. The seal goes in between the case of the transmission and the transfercase. hopefully that word salad makes sense.

So we did a fluid check and noticed the transfer case was dry. I filled it up and after driving it we saw fluid coming from the vent lines. We also checked the transmission and saw it was over filled. The transfer-case has no visible leak, transmission over filled, and possible fluid coming from vent lines if you keep adding fluid to the transfer case. Transfer case will have no fluid or low fluid levels after being driven for short distances.
