I have read about Swedish death cleaning and practice partially by taking pictures of memorabilia items that I can have on my "cloud". Easy access whenever I want and actually more practical since it is possible to find even by searching text f.ex. if what I need is on a page in a book I had. I even digitalised old photos. So I keep only necessary, really precious items.

‼️ I recommend a hope chest or a memory chest for anyone who has a lot of sentimental items they just don't want to throw away. My great-grandmother had one, my grandmother had one, my mom has one and now I have one. It's usually a large wooden chest that's placed at the end of the bed and all of the keepsakes like stuff your children make you or pictures or cards from birthdays, handmade blankets etc go in. And usually a cushion is placed on top of it and since it's at the end of your bed you can sit things on it or sit on it to put your shoes on. So that way it has one place for all your sentimental items so they don't get misplaced or lost and all of the stuff is hidden and it looks really nice and put together. Plus you get a second use out of it as a sitting place. It doesn't have to go at the end of your bed that's just where everyone in my family puts it. If you're the type of family to take your shoes off at the front door it could look nice around that area too. And because of it's limited size it also kind of keeps you from becoming a hoarder as well. If something doesn't fit in that box then you don't need to keep it. So it's easier to part with larger items since you already have a bunch of sentimental stuff stored away you don't feel the need to keep literally everything. ❤️
@lampyrisnoctiluca99042 жыл бұрын
@@WhitneyDahlin Now I want one! It would be perfect if it had a key, like those old chests in the homes of very old people that are living here in Croatia. They tended to be quite big, and would often follow up a newlywed girls into their new homes. Everyone had their chest instead of their wardrobe or closet. Yes, those were also meant for siting on. Wouldn't it be nice if I would get myself a way smaller chest where I could keep the things I love the most? Those crochet doilies my grandma made, so numerous you couldn't fill all the available spaces in the mansion no one of us have, should definitely use between a third and a half of the space. My final thesis at college. That 20 page story my cousin had handwritten for me with half the pages being her beautiful drawings. The 4 notebooks I have been writing in before going digital. A little chocolate box with the jewellery I had as a teen should go there too. Those 5 little things I collected because I expect at least one of those to become expensive in 30 or so years when today's kids start seeing the things they destroyed or lost in the childhood as expensive memorabilia. All the physical photos of my family that I have could go there. And with every passing year, I could add new things there or nothing at all. How big is your box? Where did you get a large chest from? I was thinking of measurements of 70*70*50 centimeters or something of the similar volume. Also, I could save digital things, especially the things I wrote, on the cloud and the USB sticks, which would of course be moved somewhere else with time and that thing being added to the chest. My brother and I have been talking of collecting all the photos we made of his son with our cellphones on one place, like the cloud or the USB and then give them to him for his 18. birthday. Maybe I should just buy the USB, tell him and my mom to send me the pictures thru the Bluetooth, and then just put the thing on the USB. If I would have the chest, the USB would definitely be there. What kind of stores sell those chests? I now really want to know where to go! Oh, gush. It never happened to me to suddenly just want something so much.

I like the idea of putting storage behind the sofa. Very clever. It's refreshing and exciting to finally see someone who appreciates that, in the real world, simply getting rid of things is not always the solution to clutter or small spaces.
@frostfang1 Жыл бұрын
My main priority tends to be accessibility, but sometimes some things don't really need daily accessibility, they need to be put away but still accessible outside of a storage unit. It's really refreshing to see someone who acknowledges that, and acknowledges (and has clients who do as well) that it's a solution and compromise that works well for *them* and for many of us. And also that it's an evolution. Even if they live there the rest of their lives, their priorities might change, and so will how they set up that apartment. I've been able to evolve just my room a lot in the last five years and even as it's more cluttered sometimes, it becomes more accessible and interactive in the way I need it to be, despite there being more stuff.

I call my "organized chaos". As long as my items don't clutter up the common space, he's fine with me doing my own stuff. I also try to rotate items/hobbies out of storage to see if I still am attracted to that hobby/materials or not, if not then I just sell the items as a bundle or donate it.

What revolutionized my thinking - the Minimal Mom talks about a memory bin where you can keep important sentimental items safe that you don’t want on display (I keep old toys and other things over the years) which also provides a container which is not permitted to overflow. I’ve gotten rid of a LOT of things I don’t use and don’t need and my home is so much more peaceful. Energy more freely moves through the space and even though I have a small house, it feels so much more spacious and of course it’s easier to clean now too! Minimalism and Essentialism are growing to be important pillars in my life to maintain a peaceful home.

This is the first time I've seen you actually add something, but the finished apartment is so much more inviting. There is now a place to sit and relax - look out the window, read, watch TV. Just what you need when you come home from dealing with a big city. You did the only possible solution that still results in good chi - go up. Stack things to utilize the space. Brilliant!

Thank you so much for sharing these transformations of real life home spaces. You share with so much enthusiasm, humour and understanding for how people struggle with furniture placement in their homes and open our minds to flow, fun and clarity. More power to you. Let the good vibes flow.

It's weird I never knew this was a thing, for years I have used graph paper for my room layouts, each square would represent one foot (12 inches). And the same for the pieces of furniture in the room I was doing, graph paper with cardboard stuck on, very basic representation but its quick and works for me. Great video❤️

Someone divided people into learning styles in 4 Groups and one was “model builder”. It’s one of the less common styles. There’s also “quick starter” (wants to learn by doing/ trial and error) , and researcher (will not start anything until full research has been done, then will do a thing to completion at a speed very unlike the quick starter, and I forget the 4th one.

SO much better and, as you say, this flat looks far more spacious even with the sofa. Storage is key imo and making sure that things you use often, are easily accessible. That way you'll put them away afterwards... Keeping work surfaces, tables, desks, ledges, even the floor, clutter free makes for good energy flow and a feeling of space.

Great job rearranging and organizing! find that my glasses fog much less if I wear my mask high up on my nose and use the nose metal to fit it tightly around the bridge of my nose.

Enjoyed the bonus lesson at Ikea and that you show before, after and share your process and teaching! I am certified in interior decorating and have had an interest in feng shui which I have casually studied for decades. I think your fun videos are a very nice change from researching feng shui in books, plus are you married? Teehee

She has a bunch of space up by the ceiling where she could put up floating shelves with doors. Essentially, all that storage behind the sofa could go above the sofa and floating storage units could go all along to the other wall. All she needs are the bolts. Then the sofa can go against the wall and the room opens up bigger. She could even have a longer sofa.

Storage!!! It's the best! I personally love open shelves. They may not be feng shui approved, but they work well for me. 1. I will actually put things back (unlike with cabinets) 2. I remember what I have. If the stuff is small/ugly, I do put it in a basket or tote, though.

Great improvement, a good outcome with minimal expense. What I can’t understand is why the blinds are pulled down in daytime. What horrendous sight are we being shielded from?

What a giant, US-sized fridge! I know very little about England, but when I lived in western Europe we had either no fridge at all or a small dorm-room-sized one. The redesign of the room (with the new couch) is brilliant! I'm jealous of all these young professionals and artists who can afford the services of such a great designer. 😁 ❤

I think you're so clever at what you do. You really are such a positive & joyful person to watch-you always cheer me up. But every time I watch a video of the tiny, impractical,inhuman spaces that developers have been allowed to build & make huge profits from I feel enraged. How it is allowed?!

This was part of the modernist movement after WW2 that tried to house as many people as possible in the shortest time. It’s among the reasons cities like London, Tokyo and sooo many cities around the world have so many shoebox dwellings for its people. They didn’t think of the psychological / mental health and relationship implications of having people living in such small spaces. This is why I also don’t like the glorification of the “tiny house” movement. It’s fine for a weekend getaway but not tooo live in. We don’t need big suburban American style homes nor do we need Tokyo style “mansions”, but humans need a healthy amount of space. I learned recently that even small fish need 1 gallon of space per fish in a tank.

@@ownedbymykitty270 Yes that makes sense in cities I guess.And of course many people didn't own very much & the capitalist onslaught to buy more & more hadn't really begun either. But my grandparents lived in a post-war,3 bedroom, semi-detached council house. It had massive cupboards in every room,a pantry,a huge back garden for growing their own food,a huge front garden for leisure,a Raeburn I used to love making toast on a toastng fork -an outhouse & boiler for clothes washing & a coalhouse plus 2 huge sheds. Minimal affordable rent too. It was luxurious by comparison to what's on offer these days. My daughter's friend lives in a one bedroom flat+ kitchen/diner/lounge in one room. Zero built- in storage other than food cupboards & a small cupboard in the hall for coats/hoover etc. They want us all to consume but don't build space. Yes definitely stressful to live in. Now you have to rent space for your stuff in a storage company!! It's dystopian isn't it?

@@sally6074 The people that buy so much, shop at CostCo, the ones with a 70” TV’s… those people are generally above middle class and also tend to buy large homes. For the average worker, the average size of apartments in cities tend to be small.
