CORDIO has steered the formation of several Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) in Kenya and Tanzania, leveraging local community interest and participation in mangrove, fisheries and sea grass conservation to formalize such groups and introduce VSLAs as a tool for sustainable conservation finance. These VSLAs have relied on physical ledger to record transactions, hard cash for deposits and withdrawals, and no base funds to offer a security net.
In 2024 and through funding from the European Union and the United Nations Environment Programme, we piloted an initiative to address the challenges posed by the current limitations of most VSLAs in coastal Kenyan communities. This is that story.
