Wow I had no idea about these! I've been using mesh wifi routers to try to cover my 3 story house with CAT-5 that can't run gigabit. After watching this I thought what the heck and picked up a pair of Translite TL-MC84-Ws. They worked flawlessly with my existing cable runs - I was finally able to get gigabit speeds upstairs! And these models have wifi built in, which blows away the eero mesh network during testing. One note - when ordering don't confuse the 2.5 Gig models with the MoCA 2.5 version (it'll say it all over the description and title). The units I bought dont have the 2.5 GBE ports on them, which is fine for me. THANK YOU LON!!!!

I just got these exact boxes 2 weeks ago. Great for my 2 gigabit fiber. Now every room in the house has 2 gigabit ethernet. Surprised really since the house is from the 80s.

Hey Lon, the reason iperf seems to work slower using MoCA is due to using TCP protocol to send packets and the additionally latency MoCA introduces. Basically, there's a maximum size of data TCP will send before waiting to receive an acknowledgment from the receiving end for the first few packets and then it will send more data and wait for ACK's for the next few packets and so on. This ensures that only a specific amount of data is ever in transit. It's called the window size and it's basically a sliding section of the data. The issue is when you have additional latency using MoCA (even just a few ms) the ACK's come back slow enough that it bottlenecks the entire transfer. With straight ethernet the latency is sub 1-ms typically so it's not impacted and the ACK's come back fast enough that you can saturate the full bandwidth. To adjust for this you can run iperf with the -w option and specify a larger 1 MB window size to allow more data to be in transit at once to compensate for the latency introduced by MoCA without the need for parallel streams/threads: iperf3 -c [SERVER_IP] -w 1M

You can also run iperf in udp mode. I was testing out my bonded 2.0 bridge and also only got ~500 mbps in tcp but in udp I was getting close to the full gig. It is amazing how much a few ms can impact the wondow size. Unfortunately the hitron box I'm using as a node (coda 4582u) has stability issues so I am moving back to un bonded 2.0 :(

You don't need MOCA splitters, make sure the splitter you're using has the frequency range between: 5 - 2400 MHz, splitters exactly like the one at 5:30. This type of splitters allows you to have both cable TV and satellite TV signal or cable TV and MOCA modem. Regular splitter with the frequency range between 5 - 1000 (cable TV splitters) will NOT work with MOCA modems.

This sort of product is perfect for rental properties/properties where you can't run your own cabling. This seems so much more performant and easier to manage than powerline networking...

I just installed two actiontec 2.5 adapters with 1gbit ethernet and I'm really pleased so far. Connected super easily. Originally was getting about 600mbit speeds but swapped in a moca splitter and now getting about 950mbit up or down.

Thanks for another great review. I bought these and have some observations to share. 1. If you make the DOCSIS 3.1 modifications (only operate on D-High band), you may be incompatible with older MoCA devices. I had some older ActionTec adapters that operated only on the D-Extended band - never got a MoCA connection LED. (I recognize these older adapters are not compatible with DOCSIS 3.1.) 2. The factory configuration has a fixed IP address for the adapter. It's rather clunky to access the interface to make modifications to the adapter. I think I may have bricked one adapter when configuring it - I can no longer connect to it. I've contacted Translite support.

Terminate the unused connectors. The cable companies go to great lengths to minimize leakage. This is to prevent interference to and from the cable network. The terminators are just a resistor in an F connector and easily screw onto any open connectors. When I switched to IPTV, a couple of years ago, my cable company sent me several to fill all the unused outlets. Interesting content. A few years ago, I used a similar device in my work, though I don't know if it was MoCA. It provided 100 Mb and PoE over coax. I used them when I was installing security cameras in elevators. The elevator techs installed the coax in the elevator shaft, from the car up to the machine room. I then used those adapters at either end, to provide Ethernet connections and power the camera, from a PoE switch in the machine room.

Great video as usual. Thanks! If your modem is DOCSIS 3.1 (like mine) then you do have a bit of configuring to do to get these going but the results are worth it. Using the DOCSIS 3.1 settings from the manual leaves you with 3 of the 5 channels so I believe it would actually max out at 1.5Gb, not 2Gb as mentioned in the video. A POE filter stopped my ISP modem from working at all so I used the WPS settings and definitely changed the login password to something other than admin. I have zero loss through mine with coax from the late 1980s. 370 straight off the modem/router and 370 through MoCA.

I got them 2 weeks ago too. 2-3 watt each device need only. Really great that they add a 2.5gbit port to this. Also, I add a 2.5 gbit usb-c-Ethernet-adapter to my laptop docking station, so no need to buy even an expensive 2.5gbit switch, since my internet router owns already a 2.5 gbit port.

The transfer speeds are due to how MOCA is designed- its threaded by an array of individual channels, and if you look at docsis modems, you'll see they have advertised things like "8x32" or "4x16". Your 400-500mb indicates you're likely using 6-8 channels on the devices.

I believe this moca limitation with the docsis 3.1 is only if the cable modem is on the same coax network. If you run the coax straight to modem and then from modem to router then back to moca device this limitation shouldn't occur.

These MoCA boxes sound like the perfect solution for the problem I have with slow Ethernet speeds in one of my rooms. I have an Ethernet connection in a room where I only get 10 mb speed, as detected by a 10/100/1000 meg switch. Either the Eithernet cable is 10 meg cable, or perhaps that Eithernet cable run is damaged. I have an unused cable TV coaxial connector in that room and all the coaxial cable runs in a junction box near the router., and I could use the MoCA devices to get 1000 meg Eithernet in that room. However, does the coaxial cable run in the house have to be a newer higher speed coaxial cable, or is 20 year old coaxial cable good enough for the MoCA devices? I could also put in a WiFI access point in that room to improve the WiFi in the house. What WiFi access points do you recommend?

Pretty funny that you mention this. I actually got some powerline adapters very recently for my setup. They seem to be more flexible since they run right off the home's electrical wiring itself. It would be cool if you can test out some powerline adapters and compare it to this solution.

I "upgraded" from powerline adapters to Moca. I found that while powerline is reliable (although it apparently depends on your house electrical wiring), Moca is much faster. I have the "1200Mbps" power line devices, and I get around 100Mbps actual speed around the apartment (and around 300Mbps if I have the adaptors next to each other), whereas my Moca adaptors (which are the older 1Gbps ones) will get 800-900Mbps, which is almost as good as an Ethernet cable. Pretty sure these 2.5Gbps ones will be even faster.

I already ran a coax cable to the basement room I am renting because I thought I could have my own modem and account with the ISP, but it doesn't work that way. At least that effort won't be wasted. I just wasn't aware of MoCA and the fact that it doesn't interfere with the existing signals. The main modem of the place only has the one coax cable running to it.

Hi, I have internet from coming from Xfinity split right outside the home and I have coax port on the first floor and second floor where I can connect modem/router. Right now, I have modem/router in first floor. I wanted to use the second floor coax port as well to get a better internet speed. Preferably connect a router to get direct Ethernet to upstairs. Will connecting a moca 2.5 in the second floor directly to the wall port, then router without modem and ethernet cable to PC work or what is the best way in this case. Appreciate the help.

Yes you can! I have one Moca device is connected to my fibre modem, and another Moca device in a bedroom which is plugged to a switch, and multiple computers plugged into the switch. The whole Moca system basically just acts like an Ethernet cable extension (and if you have more than 2 Moca devices then it's as though you have a switch).

Anyone know if Comcast will degrade your speed with Moca 2.0 units? I had an issue with an old Actiontec 2.0 unit. Perhaps it was just old and some components wearing out, no idea. I may add the 2.5 units to my network. I pay for about 400 mbps speed which is all I really need right now. Not a gamer or someone processing lots of video uploads, etc. I have my own Docsis 3.1 cable modem. Thanks!

Yeah... and putting a POE filter in front of a DOCSIS 3.1 modem prevents the modem from working. (At least for mine). Your only security option is setting up the MPS security. After that mine worked GREAT. Zero speed loss from one end of the house to the other.

Excellent review, thank you. I have installed about 50 Moca 2.0 and earlier devices and always use a poe filter to prevent leaking outside. Since spec permits up to 16 remote devices, can I use a Moca splitter for 10 units in my condominium building to give them Internet, but maintain isolation from unit to unit. Does turning on security also enable remote device isolation.

Do the goCoax Moca have this Docsis 3.1 limitation? I did not see anything included in the box to change their settings. Which of the two brands, goCoax, or Translite, would you prefer? Also, the POE filter, even placed outside my house, makes the signal extremely weak from the provider. I had to end up not using it.

I have a couple go coax boxes and an arris docsis 3.1 modem but my internet is not fast enough to get those speeds so it's running in docsis 3.0 mode is that still an issue? Also I checked the splitter it's within range of the frequencies needed for mocaa to work.

Ethernet has many advantages the biggest of course being full duplex data transfers. Also in most cases you're connected to a switch that manages traffic so you're not having collisions when multiple devices are transmitting at the same time.

It's pretty close to what you're paying for. These won't magically make your internet faster. Moca is a much simpler alternative to running cables all around your house which can be expensive and time consuming. Just do it bro no regrets here!
