Thank you for this objective review. Despite all the flashy techs/gimmicks, transmission defect should be a determining factor if you want to keep it long term. Just be cautious of those recalls from engines catching fire risks. Hyundai/Genesis and Kia still have a long way to go with manufacturing reliable cars. They got the performance, technology, and design right. The only thing left is to improve the engine problems that consumers keep reporting about.

I used to work with Hyundai , so if the dealer won’t do anything they need proof of the issue take it to the dealer ask them to keep it start from a cold start. It should do it first thing from cold start don’t take no for an answer . Call Hyundai motor America , get a case number and then . See if they will do anything . If they don’t do another dealer but keep talking to Hyundai Motor America , they are very nice and will advocate on your side !

All they have to do is the software update, and rectify the issue at another dealer. Other than that, no other issues. Notice no tech issues or electrical issues or any major engine issues. Just that minor gripe.

Great review! I've got this car, 2022, all is well, I agree on the wheels, major pain to clean. That said I'm happy to pay for my own oil changes as I wouldn't trust a dealership would actually even change the oil or filter. . The car is good, comfy, has no business having the power it has, (Thank You Hyundai!!!) and it is a blast to drive. No LSD, no problem, who the hell is gunna track this car? I have over 16k on mine in just over a year with no real problems to speak of. 2 gripes, no vented seats and no wireless Android Auto, but neither is a deal breaker for me. Well done! Cheers!

I think many brand has a car that is not very good. Coming from personal experience, I’ve had an Elantra and put 30k+ miles on it and it was a solid car, no issues and interior quality was very good, especially with the assembly. Now I have a 23 sportage getting close to 30k miles and is still as good as new. The sonata though, I did drive it when I got the Elantra and I didn’t like it, there was something about it that didn’t convince me

I have a 2022 Hyundai Sonata N Line, and I've been having the same transmission issues! I haven't noticed the cold start jerking, but I get a lot of jerking while in stop n go traffic. Even worse, one time I lost 80% acceleration on my way to work. No matter how much the car revved, it could not go over 20 mph. Thankfully once I turned off the car, and let it sit for about an hour it was okay. When I brought these issues up to the dealership, they shrugged it off and said there was an ECU update that would fix it. Stated that it would be really hard to recreate the issues so there was nothing they could do about it. When I did my research, I also found out that lots of N-Lines got recalled for transmissions but not mine which is concerning. Glad I am not the only one, and hopefully Hyundai will notice all of the complaints and do something about it!

@@SRTbryan98 I bought mine Used from Non hyundai dealer and purchased an extended warranty cause Hyundai doesn’t allow you to transfer their 10yr/100,000 mile original warranty. So all I have to pay is my Deductible for the claim 👍🏼 It started doing it a few months after I bought the car and I checked for recalls but none came out for my VIN buttt… I work @ a shop that has access to a Diagnostic too and I wanna say over 40+ TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for the car 😳. I called my local Hyundai’s and asked if they had any other similar problems with DN8 sonatas that have come in. Of course they all said no and had no clue on how to solve it unless I bring it in , but like you probably know. It’s not 100% chance it going to happen every time you drive the car. So i waited , it would happen & I would be too busy to take it. Then i would get time and it wouldn’t do it @ all! Until i figured it might be triggered by the first few seconds of driving. If I get in the car for the first time of the day, Cold OR Warm from key to start , and begin driving within the first .5 miles staying under 2k rpm’s. the car will stay in that mode and not let it shift, hit boost, accelerate. So the other day It happened as I was stuck behind a big rig otw to the freeway. Said F it and took it in. I asked the Service Manager to let me take a Tech on a drive to show them what happening because it may not happen again when I leave it with them. The tech has never seen anything like it and was shook like I was the first time lol. Get back to the dealer and they say they’ll run a Diagnostic to see which part isn’t functioning correctly. The Service Manager guessed it was either the Cat or Trans , so he was right on one 🤷🏻‍♂️ The rear main seal was unexpected for them but ig it’ll be good to get a new one ☝🏼

We have a 2023 SEL Plus, only about 7k miles or so but no issues thus far and have a different transmission and half the miles. In regards to the break dust we aren't having that issue, perhaps it's due to the N line breaks. I usually have that issue with American brands. My only annoyance is that in bright sunlight the reflection off shifter hits right below my sun glasses. Insurance was cheaper than some other mid-size but not as cheap as other, really about in the middle. Mine has the 1.8 turbo which is quite decent and in a round trip of about 1000 miles I averaged just below 40 mpg staying "around" the speed limit. Very nice update, thanks guys!

I wonder if that Sonata was made in Alabama or in South Korea and, if it was made in Alabama, then why Hyundai hasn't closed that plant. Here in Puerto Rico the majority of Hyundais and Kias (if not all) are made in Korea and you can still see Hyundais and Kias from the 90s and 00s running and with relatively high mileage.

I had a 2023 Santa Fe 2.0 turbo ultimate trim (in Canada) and I had the same jolting problem with the Transmission at cold start since it uses the same wet dual clutch. From what I was told by several dealerships, its apparently the transmission checking that everything is in order. I believe it states something along those lines in the owners manual as well and they say it's b/c of the design of the dual clutch...that's maybe why most newer hyundai/Kias went back to the 8 speed auto. Nonetheless hopefully u don't have anymore problems...great video keep up the good work 😊

Hi guys. I leased a 2021 Santa Fe Hybrid. It has been so unreliable. It stopped accelerating on I-95 in Milford, Connecticut. It was a month old. The dealership kept it for 18 days for a “software update”. Then a little later we saw the low antifreeze light on the dash. Finally all lights came on. The dealership is not helping. I work for an auto glass replacement shop here in Canada. A customer brought in their 2020 Hyundai Tucson for a windshield chip repair last. It had 100,000 kms on the clock and all the vehicle did was shake and rattle as the engine ran when we brought into the garage and out of the garage. There was also a slight squealing sound coming from under the hood. It did not sound good. My coworkers and I thought there was something wrong with the engine. Initial quality and value maybe good, but long term reliability needs to be more important.

I drove a 2018 Tucson for 5 years... had ZERO issues whatsoever with it... if you work with cars, you should know 99% of the long term reliability isn't who built the car, it's WHO OWNS THE CAR!!!! Maybe the guy who brought it into the shop thought you should do an oil change once every 100,000 miles whether it needs it or not... there are people like that out there, and your "i saw this one car that rattled" is hardly a scientific study of Hyundai Tucsons. Your anecdotal experience is hardly something to go "well, I thought Hyundai's were good until heard that one story from a glass repair guy!". Come to think about it... I've pretty much lived through every stupid internet meme... 1) I've owned a Hyundai and had no problems 2) My Hyundai had a dual-clutch, never had an issue 3) My Hyundai had a turbo engine... gee, and it was reliable 4) My Hyundai has never been stolen 5) My Hyundai has never spontaneously burst into flames. Just goes to show stupid internet meme's are just that... stupid. If you take care of your car, it will take care of you. I did, however get rid of my 2018 Tucson after 5 years... since I loved it so much, I replaced it with a 2023 Tucson Hybrid... had that about a year now, no issues either.

@kevinW826 blanket statements just show the stupidity of the person making them. Adolph Hitler is a dead person, but not all dead persons are Adolph Hitler. Care to change your statement from "Hyundai Transmissions" to "One specific Hyundai Transmission". (Dual Clutch... a Transmission EVERY company has a problem getting right... not all Hyundais have a dual Clutch, in fact, few do. All other Hyundai Transmissions are just fine, in fact a lot of them, like Hyundais CVT are preferred over other companies). It's people like you that throw away an entire barrel of gold because a dog took a whiz on the side of the barrel. Your one anecdotal story or dumb interpretation of "one Transmission = ALL Transmissions doesn't hold up against the facts. Consumer Reports, JD Power, Car and Driver and countless car reviews all heap praise on the safety and reliability of the vast majority of Hyundai vehicles. I was definitely looking forward to this review as I’ve been leasing the same model since last November w/~17,000 miles so far. 1. “The Shake” is interesting, as I noticed it early on cold starts but mine is consistent with only one jolt every single start, I let it warm up in the garage, and it’s fine driving after that. I assume it’s some type of tension release, especially since I am prone to driving it harder than the average person. 2. C&D had a 40k mile long-term tester and mentioned the exorbitant amount of brake dust on their tester; I just keep a cloth handy and wipe them down periodically between washes since it’s consistently prone to heavy dust. 3. The maintenance service intervals are great; however, I am disappointed that I paid to replace the front brakes and rotors at 12,500 miles. The advisor tried to get Hyundai to pay for them but they declined; I ride/race motorcycles as well as cars and refuse to “ride down” brakes yet they were worn down beyond potentially resurfacing, so I’m now keeping a close watch on them. 4. My fuel economy is incredulously abysmal (typically ~19MPG but been below 10 many times 🤦🏾‍♂️), but I expect it having come from driving a G35S to this, and know my foot is heavy. 😂 My road-trip MPG is always good though. 5. 13:28 i tried setting the vents in the system to close but that feature doesn’t seem to work and the vents open consistently when I don’t want them especially in the summer allowing hot air into the cabin - I just figured a hack to close all the vent slots to keep smells/hot air from blowing into the cabin at least. Incredible review - surely appreciate seeing this one! 🫡

The problem with hyundai/kia is that they keep making new powertrains. It's great to experience new technologies, but it tends to have a lot of issues. Toyata has developed a few engines for decades, and it rarely has problems with them. 2.5t engine and 8speed dual clutch in that Sonata came out to the market in 2020, so I didn't expect them to be reliable lol

Wait and see if the transmission gets better or holds out long enough to get you out of warranty. Mechanical issues (never) fix themselves and Hyundai dealers (always) avoid taking care of issues untill you force them. Good luck with the squeak.

Honestly the N line has the dual clutch transmission and for most, if not all companies, ive never heard good stories from these transmissions. From luxury companies such as mercedes, audi etc, to companies like Ford. Ive never heard big issues with the regular transmissions on the Hyundai's or Kia's. Just the DCT atleast from what ive looked upon.

Hey guys! Great video. These newer sonatas are holding up much better than older ones, we havent hsd any come in for MAJOR issues other than a few hybrids. The transmission jolting that you are feeling is it checking if there are any issues with it, and everything is in order.

My goodness there are a lot of doom sayers and “my goodness what if this or that happens” in here! Condemning a product because of poor StealerShip interaction is not fair on the product, it’s up to the dealer to do the right thing, if they won’t budge then go the level up and use whatever rights you have as consumers in your region. We are lucky here in Au, our consumer laws keep companies and their outlets fairly honest. As for reliability issues for Hyundai vehicles, I guess you could always use the old rule of “In a barrel of apples you generally always find one bad one” As a family we have collectively owned more than 15 Hyundais of various models and have not had one major issue, yes a few minor niggles to do with squeaks and rattles but other than normal wear they have all been affordable and reliable.

See you traded this Sonata for the 24 Sante Fe with DCT issue. Did you do this because the Dealer was unable to fix the DCT in the Sonata? This is quite a concern as I was considering a new Sonata N Line? I have a deposit on a 24 Sonata AWD instead but I wanted the N line extra features. What should I do? Deposit is fully transferrable & refundable so no risk but don't want a better equipped Lemon ! Maybe just keep my 30000 mile 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 AWD Sedan with 32000 miles .It's been great for 6 years but know not under warranty. Hyundai just issued a recall on my car so I have to park it outside? All these scenarios are ridiculous for Hyundai. After 12 years with Hyundai/Kia is it time for me to buy elsewhere ?
@CarConfections

While we were initially a bit concerned about this Sonata's DCT jerk, it never got any worse and would come and go. We traded for the Santa Fe to get something fresher on the channel not out of concern. Should you be concerned now based on our Santa Fe's much worse transmission issues? That's going to be up to you. N-Line is much more fun to drive but has a more mechanically complex powertrain as the trade-off. Hope this helps
