It’s up there, one of the greatest albums of the 80’s, and by far the greatest, greatest hits album ever, of any group.

It was 'True Faith' that grabbed me by my 14-year-old ears when it hit US radio in '87. It became one of my very first 12"s and I've listened to the 10+ minute dub, the 9-plus minute remix, and 1963 countless times since. My 16-year old riend would play Substance on a boombox in the back seat of his car on the ride to and from school and I was hooked for life.

Too late to the party. But never too late for New Order. Dig a little deeper into history, for the REAL magic. Including Joy Division. It was, is and has been a wild, magical, mystical ride. It provided a genuine soundtrack to my life.

I’ve just discovered that Substance has been reissued in a Deluxe 4CD package with the original LP on CD1 & CD2, the extras from the cassette release on CD3, and the famous “Substance Live” gig they did in 1987 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Southern California USA taking up CD4. Then I looked at the tracklist and to my abject horror I discovered that the live CD cut out their 3-song encore, where after 30-50% of the crowd had left thinking the show was over, the band returned to play “Atmosphere”, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and their cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sister Ray”. (Luckily the full performance including the 3 encores is still here on KZbin someplace, I think. I have it in FLAC … )

16 in 1987 bought the Australian thick-case 2CD "Substance", and with the next week's wages bought a CD player! The Australian promo poster had the leaf upon blue of the"True Faith" single and wording "Substance 1987", naively we laminated it, doh. Buying next anything New Order, Joy Division and anything Factory meant they'd nearly all be the Australian releases, and especially the cassettes for "1981-1982", "Confusion", even the first white cassette for "Brotherhood" are now among the rarest and hardest to find for collectors, but the treasury has been within us and our sharing our passion with our peers and family juniors, it seems a universal we've shared as New Order fans worldwide. Peter Saville's "dichmomat" innovation for the"peony blue" and"coral red" photogaphic art was a standout, the limited edition of 1000 "The Gatefold Substance" 2LP is a treat to have, a high fidelity pressing I believe. Factory donated one to every employee for their birthdays, and one for the first ever telethon for the "Children In Need" charity, which we've ended up with! A second brilliant series, thanks to all involved!

It's a good series this although I wish the episodes were a bit longer. I'm fascinated by how the songs came together and understanding the different roles in the group - how everyone collaborated on lyrics including Rob Gretton, and its interesting to learn that Gillian wrote some keyboard parts for Shellshock, True Faith, World in Motion etc and I never knew Hooky wrote the sequenced bassline for 'Touched...' - more geeky facts please!

My friend got Substance and we played it to death! Then I bought it on Cassette (cuz it had the B-sides too) and played that to death. Then Technique came out...and that my friends became my favourite album, ever. The End.

Substance was the album that really put New Order on the map with the US. Got a copy in 1989 when I was first buying music. I knew BLT and True Faith. It took a bit for me to warm to in. I was really into Depeche Mode in 1989 (cannot blame me 101 had just come out) In the summer of 1990 I while on a road trip with 30 other kids I traveling over 12 hour I finally listened to Substance both cds from start to finish. I was hooked. 1990 to 1991 I was getting anything New Order on my limited income from cleaning tables as a teen. Electronic album coming out was big day for me as a teen. When Republic cam out it got delayed for a week. I was so pissed, but for me it was worth it. Regret I remember my sister and I listening to it and she said it was the best thing they ever did. I would say there are two types of NO fans, the Joy D. puck and the electronic pop fans. I fall in the later, but have come to enjoy Joy D. over the years. I still listen to New Order an their side protects a great deal. Lowlife and Republic being my two fav of the band, but I did enjoy the new stuff they put out. Finally got to see them live in 2022 with another of my favorite band Pet Shop Boys.

Hilarious. Apparently in the USA after seeing the TBTHOG video, hair metal fans would turn up to a NO gig, and would be disappointed that NO weren't hair metal ! Does anyone know what type of Jaguar with a CD player Tony Wilson purchased ?
