The best tip I can give about this game relates to knowing how many vehicles you need for a line. If you look at the line overview (? forgot exact name, the one that shows all the lines and their profits), there's a column that you seem to overlook, the 'Rate' column. That column tells you the average cargo flow in units per year, which is the same exact units that show when you click on an industry. You can use this to plan out your vehicles such that the rate of the vehicles is slightly above the production rates of your industries, that way you can guarantee that you're moving 100% of the cargo that the industry produces.
@CamposGaspar3 жыл бұрын
That is great. Very good tip, thank you!
@112Haribo3 жыл бұрын
This is the comment I was looking for. None of the other numbers are important: only look at rate! Also, it is completely fine if there is cargo going to waste on your platforms as long as you're maxed out on demand. For example, look at Loughton and Mablethorpe. Add their fuel demand together and boom. You now know exactly how much oil you need to ship. Multiply that same amount by 2 and you know how much crude you need to ship.

How do you use this statistic when you are combining different industries/types of goods throughout your lines? I don’t understand the rate number when the line consists of e.g. trip 1 with 2x crude, trip 2 with 1x oil + 1x machines, return trip with 1x fuel + 1x food.

some tips: station, signal, rate for station layouts: (more clean, efficient drive through station layout) (c - Cargo platform, P - passenger platform, T - track) what i like to to do is putting down a 1 track station, then have the layout be C - T - T - T - T - C, tracks connecting cleanly to the middle 2 tracks for drivethrough and everything else has to move off the tracks, right before that a diamond. signaling is tricky with it but it works really really good with a space efficient layout using all platforms. basically a one way signal on both ends of the drivethrough on their respected tracks and NON-1-way on the platform entrances both sides right before the merges so trains can start rolling sooner, important for big stations. it also works great if you want a passenger-cargo mixed station, just make it a C - T - T - T - T - C - P - T - T - P, or even a third cargo track between C - P (CTTTTCTPTTP) and make the merges max curvature straight in (41kph), diamond being right before the outer merge(60 - 80 kph), no diamond between outer and inner merge. i do have to say in advance that platform 3 to 5 have to be merged in 2 motions. there is no simple drag and merge. first the curve out the station towards the other tracks, then the one onto the tracks. platform 1 and 2 can be merged with a s merge in 1 motion since it is basically parallel tracks I find it to be a really clean and efficient design easy to handle you also dont have to free up trains with signals, all these "free up signals" tend to do is blocking merges if tracks get really busy. if a train drove through a merge with its full length, the track behind it abd with that the merge is cleared up automatically without any signals to free it up. other one regarding rate, didnt read other comments first tho so it has already been mentioned you dont need to watch trains move goods. in the line overview bottom right corner youll find a column with how much throughput the vehicles on the line have per station per year. the amount of resources produced and shipped also display per year. at the moment of watching the line it is probably around 1000 and the pumps produce 1200. so with this you can do near perfect calculations on how many trains with how many wagons you have to run on a line. Also very helpful for matching city demand with your trucks so you dont put too many vehicles on there. another passive benefit of that is youll have less emissions because less vehicles edit: it's called rate and i see my estimate 1k was hella accurate

looking at "romsey crude 1", i think there's a way of making it more efficient and removing the need for truck entirely. the crude line goes through the fuel station in both directions but you are not stopping, even on the way back. this means the tanker trains are only making money on the run with crude and then making a loss on the return as they come back empty. if you set it to stop on the way back it will bring the oil to the central station on the way back allowing you to make money in both directions and allowing you to completely do away with the trucks entirely and saving you money on upkeep. a bit like what you did further north with the trains going out completely full with crude and coming back half full with fuel.
@josephdurnal3 жыл бұрын
This is what I was thinking, instead of running an empty train all the way back to the crude well, run a half full train of oil that way and stop at the fuel refinery. I haven't done the math but that should be more profitable than trucks at 50% capacity for the round trip.
@BoomerKeith13 жыл бұрын
I suspect that's where he's heading, but wanted to establish the train line first. He basically built it with that in mind.
@tomshackell3 жыл бұрын
Yeah spotted the same. It's a mistake IMO, there is literally no need for that truck service to move the oil: you could just use the trains which are currently travelling back empty and burning cash.

You make hard mode look so easy!! Thank you for great tips and great content! I would like to comment about the signals on the train tracks - the train will stop before the signal if the "block" is occupied so in the way you set it if there is suddenly a queue of trains (or like two close trains) then a train can stop behind a signal and block an intersection for other trains too Oh and you can choose the tank color before adding and buying :)

I play the vanilla game now, I did struggle with the principle on how a coalmine distributes its production amongst the steelworks it can reach... but now I made a road from each steelworks to two iron mines and two coal mines... and then a zig-zag connection from one steelworks to the other, and to the next... every coalmine wants to distribute to every steelworks roughly evenly, so you end up with the largest part of the coal making multiple trips across these zig-zag connectors... and the beauty of it all... these trains are balanced in two directions, so you run the strongest longest trains at record profits. On top of that I also don't hesitate to make a train deliver coal to one far away steelworks and then iron back to the steelworks closer by... it doesn't work with coal both ways, then some coal stays in the train, and I'm not sure the pay then is worth it...

Tip one : Tractive effort has close to zero effect. You can happily ignore that number. Look only at engine power and top speed. Surprisingly, the monthly price maintenance is (almost) solely driven by the power. Second tip: You are paid for transportation per km, not efficient delivery. e.g. make sure your vehicles are fully loaded even route migh look wierd. Example : add new train line from Oil rig to Fuel production. Then remove road vehicle line from Oil refinery to Fuel production. Then move the Fuel road cargo station from FuelProduction fab next to train station by the Oil rig. Yes, your customer delivery line for Romsey fuel starts at Oil rig. As result both train lines will be transporting liquids back and forth and print money like no tomorrow.

If your production is 100, and you need 2 unites to produce 1 product, you need 200 units of input per game cycle. To match this, bring up your Line Statistics tab, and look at the line's "Rate". Match the Rate to the required input (in the case provided earlier, that would be 200). Much easier to manage the moving target this way. Add or remove cars to get closer to that ideal "Rate".

Instead of multiple trains I usually do really big trains with multiple engines. This way there is no traffic problem, sometimes I can even get away with a single track. At your oil line, I would just add another locomotive to both trains and make them longer, just two trains needed.
@kenbarney38433 жыл бұрын
For cargo lines you want to match the line rate (viewable in the line manager) to the production rate. For example, if your crude oil well hs a max production rate of 400 you want your line to have a rate of 400 or o bit above.
@kilo3633 жыл бұрын
Enjoying the series. I don't understand your thinking with the Romsey Oil line though. surely the oil train should be bringing back fuel to the middle station (so earning on 2 of 3 legs) and then truck the fuel from the refinery to the town? You seem to have an extra unnecessary step in the chain

The reason the extra crude oil train came out of the other depot is because, as you clicked the button to clone, there was a train blocking the path to the nearest signal on the route from that depot, so it used the other one since it could get to the station from it without the path to the first signal on the way blocked

Unless Squirrel did it in off camera, a large problem in the in city's is not getting full fuel coverage he only placed 1 drop-off in the city's and it will have grown way beyond that one unless he got very lucky at this point should be 2 or more points.

So squirrel. In the 1800’s I was transporting hundreds of people between 2 cities in trolleys, making lots of money. I decided to build a passenger train and nobody went to it so I abandoned the project. When I unlocked planes I build a flight path to each city and it was super popular, for like 3 years, then my trolley line died. Then after 3 years the planes died off and people went back to the trolleys. Is there like a “new technology” buff where when a technology is new, like airplanes, people choose those over the old transportation to a brief period?

So this is a bit far back, but the BR 75.4 is actually the better value than the A3/5 for hilly terrain. Costs and running costs are based on top speed and power, basically ignoring tractive effort. So some of the costs of the A3/5 are going to the extra top speed, which isn't being used on a hill (and not at all in this situation due to the wagon speed). And the BR 75.4 gets far more tractive effort for the money. If you double-head BR 75.4s, you wind up with more power and significantly more tractive effort, for only slightly more running costs.

You dont really need to seperate crude lines and oil/fuel lines when you are using trains id say. You design it so that your rate is equal to the crude production and your crude trains can go back half full to the fuel refinery, they will be profiting full on the way from crude to oil and will profit half to the midpoint where your fuel refinery is, that will make you profit 1.25 instead of 1 on the crude trains. Yes, it will be slower since it stops midway (so might profit slightly less than 1.25, but will still be more than 1), but still will be fast enough id say to catch the production rate of a single crude, and once you hook up the other crude which is in southwest of the oil refinery, your 1.25profit line will profit 1.5 since your oil refinery will be able to fill your trains. After that you can shuttle your fuel to east in a seperate line with a faster train building and using a 3rd rail (presumably after you unlock faster liquid tanks and trains so that you can start with fast tracks and with a train design to capitilize on that.) between fuel refinery and crude. Edit: wrote this like a minute ago and seeing you midway station I think you already planned something like this xd so nvm
