I think what the boys are missing in regards to Sydney’s family watching Shogun is the fact that this is the second version of this story after a famous 1980 miniseries. For many Americans the former series is nostalgic & what our perception of Japan was for quite a while (the history & culture). The boys are all non Americans while Sydney & her family are. So likely Sydney’s parents probably watched the original Shogun miniseries back in the day like most Americans did. PS: I have no proof, but I feel like the Shogun restaurant chain was inspired by the miniseries. Shogun as a title wasnt really known to Americans. At least one got its name after the other.

@PorscheT18 ай бұрын
I thought the same thing! It's been decades since I read the book, but I knew something was off. This adaptation made it seem like Toranaga was lost/unsure of himself in the middle. Perhaps the show was trying to make this part of the whole act that Toranaga was putting on to fool his enemies, but it really didn't come off that way.

@@PorscheT1 I think it was because the show spent too much time keeping the audience in suspense. You could've cut maybe an entire episode of content in the middle and come to the same conclusion but with the audience less annoyed about Toranaga stalling around. I feel like they should've made it clearer earlier that it was all an act. It felt like they were sacrificing good story time just to not 'spoil' the reveal.

@@kiritsugu5365 eh non of the decisions in the middle seem appropriate or fair regardless. Trying to get your generals to kill themselves is a terrible plan. He should have died. Twice he only escaped thanks to his son deciding to do a murder. Fun Facts: Shogun is so good to the point where the main actor/producer of the show Hiroyuki Sanada got them to hire Japanese etiquette teachers to make sure that everything they did was accurate to the time, the language is literally from the time & not modern speaking. Just to be clear Shogun is a fake story inspired by real history of Tokugawa Ieyasu & William Adams. Also its a bit of a romanticized story by James Clavell who was actually a P.O.W. of the Japanese in WW2. And HULU saw how successful Shogun was and bugged Hiroyuki Sanada for a season 2 even though series is technically finished because there was only 1 book.

Belatedly commenting: Quite the interesting talk about why we don't see/don't call/don't get "truly original" stories anymore. You should look up/read into the idea of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth, though it might be one of those things you would rather not have known. I do think, anime-speaking, that eastern/Asian myths might do a better job at trying to challenge the Monomyth than your typical western media piece. As far as echoing either Tolkein or Herbert's Dune, the thing that sets them apart from other authors (in my opinion) is that they created entire cosmologies and Gods for their settings ahead of time, rather than just wing it with "soft magic" explanations for the history of the world (or Universe) Also, Connor's John Blackthorn impression is solid gold.
