First thank you so much for this video. This changed so much for me in one moment! I was reluctant to click on this video because of being triggered so many times to "forcefully" process my traumatic memories, without ever feeling safe. This is the first time I hear someone stressing how much feeling safe in the present moment can help. I believe trauma can get worse if inadequately handled. Sorry for mistakes, English is not my first language. Waiting for your next video about perfectionism! Thank you once again for all that you do, you are saving lives. All the best, Isidora from Bosnia

Your descriptions of trauma, its personal impact and various treatments are excellent. I’ve had 3 major traumas in my life. I think I deal with them by numbing myself. At one time, I’d describe myself as “ enthusiastic “. That person is gone. My emotions are blunted now & it is difficult to trust ppl again. A few months ago, I summoned up the courage to make an appointment with a local therapist and left a VM. She never called me back. I need to work through these traumatic experiences in life. I’m a young 70. I want to rediscover joy.

Best explanation of how traumatic memories are formed I have heard, it really makes sense. It's also made me realize that adults in children's lives have a responsibility to not weaponize their position of authority over kids in their lives because these kids will need to come back to them for help in processing the events that happen to them in their lives through rrframing essentially reprocessing and if the kids can't feel safe around the adults, they have no way of addressing potentially traumatic situations

I unfortunately can't afford trauma therapy. I have trauma, that occurred when I was also still a baby.. So so much. Just explaining all my trauma i know (there is more, sometimes new memories come suddenly) would cost me thousands of €'s because its so much.. And yes I'm also numbing and it brought me to dangerous situations throughout my life.
@alyssaeschak84343 жыл бұрын
I am in the same boat. What I have done is looked for resources within my means. I bought a book on healing called “Whole Again” which lead me to getting this DBT workbook. Now that might not be the route you go down because my trauma or experience might differ for yours. But the point is don’t give up on yourself. You don’t deserve to suffer your whole life. Do what you can to heal yourself because at the end of the day you’re the one who needs to. And I’m telling you, you can do it. I’m only a month and a half into my process. And there’s no time line but I have maybe one or two things that I can do now that give me even just minutes of peace. Practice, patience, and unconditional love. You can do this :)

This is so incredibly helpful! I've been wondering why upsetting events after I went into recovery/therapy no longer caused flashbacks and weren't as upsetting as it was in my younger years. I was able to move away from a black-white sort of thinking. The example of an "upsetting" event vs a traumatic event was illuminating.

Reprocessing really helps alot with the reframing journey. And the constant, synapses firing off with the trauma needs healing and rest. You are speaking on biopsychology. I also learned exercising not only helps to lower my blood pressure, but so does healthy coping techniques like dealing with trauma. I learned myself avoidance and ignoring my pain, doesn't help make it go away. And so facing it head on, allowed me to desensitize the memory by sitting with it. I realized other people, have their own work to do. And how I have way less problems, trying to save other people's emotions when I needed to deal with my own reactions

Just a fantastically articulated video and motivation to confront my potential avoidance of trauma memories, although it’s been hard to self diagnose never officially been diagnosed and function “well” by typical standards I.e job, exercise , meditation, no unhealthy coping mechanisms no alcohol nothing . Hi Billythekid. Thanks so much for your supportive comments and for letting me know it made a difference to you. Many high functioning people have trauma histories - and I think the question is not just how well someone functions, but how happy they are. Let me know if you have any other questions, or topics you'd like me to address. Someone recently asked me to do a video on PTSD Hyperarousal, which will (when I can get it out!) address the sleep issue, and how both pervasive that is as well as how difficult that is to change.

I’ve only started healing trauma last year. I’ll be 38 this year. My father passed away from a drug overdose when I was 9 and i get flashbacks all the time of the day we found out from the sheriff. I’ve been trying high and low to get EMDR but my current therapist doesn’t see my fathers death as a form of PTSD (since I didn’t witness his death in person), so a trauma yes but not PTSD😢 everyone I know thinks it’s PTSD but I’m unsure and feel a little lost. It has gotten worse over the years..perhaps I buried the pain in my youth or didn’t grieve properly since I was so young. But I find myself reliving that day often and thinking of my father and just cry and feel very depressed

@letsgoBrandon2043 жыл бұрын
@@KingLeonidas_300 It varies. If my mind is on my problems a lot then it's every few days. When things are going relatively well I might not think of them for weeks (a month or so). I'm inconsistent, sometimes I can almost convince myself that there's nothing fundamentally wrong with me, then it all comes back with severe lack of self confidence. Then my mind wanders and crappy memories come back. I feel like I'm an evolutionary dead end, a non-starter, failed experiment.

I’ve worked with my therapist before with emdr to help with social anxiety from past pain and it worked well, but a month ago I went through a very traumatic event with one of my pets attacking me. We’ve tried emdr now but it’s not really helping and I have a tendency to numb out during and after the session. Your explanation of how you need to move between the safe space and the traumatic memory makes sense, but I can’t find a safe place. The attack happened in my home (that I had just moved into three weeks before!) so even the shower or my bed doesn’t feel safe. That is to say, the typical suggestions for relaxation (hot bath, meditation, etc) don’t feel safe and places I’d normally think of (a park on a sunny day for example) don’t feel safe. Really, the world doesn’t feel safe. It seems like negative, intrusive thoughts appear no matter where I try to picture as a safe place. I’m sure this is what is hindering the emdr this time. I’m going to try your mini series, but is there anything else you’d recommend I do?
@BarbaraHeffernan4 жыл бұрын
I am SO sorry that happened to you. How terrifying. I do think EMDR can help with that eventually, but for now it sounds like as physiological relaxation as much as possible is the key. Working on accessing a feeling of safety in the moment in your home as much as you can. It will probably take time. Hopefully the mini series helps. I also did this video live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZXRhXacnrhgoNE - which utilizes a safe place from your past...

I have never truly felt like the many phycologist I have had over the years did much if anything to fix the CBT or trama issues I have had my whole life. I just end up being able to see what they want to see and it make them feel good I tell them what I think they want to hear and in the end they state that I completed the course but I feel the same as I did when I started and in one or two cases I left worse. Now I have these very hard beliefs and rules I live by and just resently I walked to my husband about a few of my deep rules and beliefs in a hope to help him with his anxiety and he was asking if I was okay and how I could believe that being happy is a bad thing. Of course I gave him examples of the reasons and the results of my years of testing out these core beliefs but I am confused to why he is saying I have cherophobia. I am not afraid of being happy I just know that for every good thing there is an equal evil thing so the trama and pain and suffering I went through was a much needed thing to have been thru to get him and the blessings I have and that soon I will have to suffer again to keep them. Never more never less always a balance. So as I was listening to this I had the feeling of giving it the old collage try and subscribed to your channel. If anything it will give me more knowledge to understand things that I myself don't understand. So thank you ☺️
