Finally I have made it outside of Moscow. Kirov is 1000km from Moscow by airplane. I was fortunate to fly there to take a look at a very TYPICAL Russian Supermarket. I am continually told to visit shops not in Moscow, so here I am in Kirov. I finished of the video back at my local shop. Let me know in the comments how this compares to "YOUR" local supermarket in the country where you live? Let's here a few reviews and how it compared to Russian supermarkets. Very few people in the store. The shops in Finland are otherwise the same, but there are always too many old ladies and pensioners in front. I assume that Russian pensioners order food for home delivery online. It's smart, but the social life is easily reduced.

For people who ask themselves the question "why so few customers?" I answer: there are a lot of such stores, literally next door. Also now almost everyone orders delivery, it is almost always free and fast. Specifically, this chain of stores delivers half an hour to the door, free from about $5. People like to go to big stores on weekends to buy a lot, and this is a small store near the house, to stop by on the way from work when you need to get groceries that quickly run out (milk, eggs, bread)

@dumdum8538Күн бұрын
The location is important. I live in a small russian town and it seems like two supermarkets can have vastly different number of customers even if they're only one street away from each other. Some are crowded to the point of it being hard to walk though and some are empty. Maybe people just have their preferences. Or maybe it's middle of the day on monday and everyone's at work or in school.
@dumdum8538Күн бұрын
@@A.Bellini well it's the most popular chain of stores, not the most popular store obviously as it's pretty empty people wise. Russian towns are built of districts that combine living spaces with their own small shopping areas, hospitals, schools etc. It means that people of any particular district will mostly go to their own supermarkets, the nearest to their house. So there's A LOT of supermarkets, mostly Magnet's and Pyaterochka's. There are other names but these two made it their shtick to be located almost everywhere and be as accessible and large in number as possible. They're everywhere, always standing ass to ass to each other lol. Their traffic depends on the number of people in their district.

"Some call this floor the "crazy floor," the "drunk floor," or the "mad floor." Several years ago, an experiment was launched, during which it was found that this type of floor actually increases sales, with customers making more unplanned purchases. Simply put, people more often looked away from the floor to the shelves with goods. This floor attracts and surprises customers, however, some customers may find it too unusual, causing unpleasant sensations, dizziness, and even nausea, which may discourage them from visiting the store in the future. That is, the flow of regular customers may decrease. As a result, Pyaterochka has not yet continued the experiment and left the unusual floor only in already opened stores."

Truly shocking how the Russians are struggling without even the bare essentials! Meanwhile, here in sunny California, we’re living in a land of abundance-everything your heart desires is freely available. Just politely ask the shopkeeper to unlock the steel bars, and voilà, paradise is yours! Sure, most of the food only racks up a modest 30% interest on my credit card, but hey, I don’t have to pay in cash like those poor Russians. Sure, their groceries might cost a mere 20% of what I shell out at Walmart, but at least I have the privilege of stretching my payments out for months. After all, someone has to keep the bankers on Wall Street thriving, right? Priorities!

3300km from Moscow. Novosibirsk. Pyaterochka is located on part of the first floor of my nine-storey building. Its size is smaller than the one in the video. But the assortment is slightly smaller. The prices are about the same. In general, small chain stores are very popular in Russia. A Magnet is working in the next house. There is a Chizhik ("Finch") and a Lenta ("Ribbon") across the street from me. In the next block there is another bigger Pyaterochka, Yarche! and Maria-Ra. In all of them, the prices are about the same, but the brands of goods differ by 40 percent, I would say. Almost every store has its own brands of products. Fish and meat stores are also often chain stores. There is a "Fish Day" and a "Torgovaya ploshad' ("Shopping area") in front of my home. One for fish, the second for meat, milk, cheese and cottage cheese from local farmers. Separately, there are chain pastry shops and bakeries - Khlebnitsa (Breadbox), Kulikovsky and Dudnik. These are the shops that are less than a 10-minute walk from my apartment. I live 4km from the city center. Stores compete with each other and in order to attract customers, they make discounts on different products. We have an "Edadeal" app to keep track of which store is more profitable to go to today, for example, for canned green peas (this is one of the most important components of the classic New Year's salad in Russia)))) I'm too lazy to follow this, I just go to the Pyaterochka in my house, but my grandmother (74 years old) loves this app very much and always knows where the discounts are and where it's worth going today)) The same application (Lekvapteke) is available for pharmacies. We have a lot of chain pharmacies. There are 4 of them in my Neighborhood alone. During the day, people like my grandmother go shopping, i.e. pensioners and young mothers on maternity leave. Pyaterochka even has an additional 10% discount for pensioners from the moment of opening until 13.00. After 5 p.m., the shops are crowded. Because mostly people work until 5 or 6 p.m.

Hi. Love the vids. I'm noticing a "trend" toward convenience, luxury, and "comfort". While there is nothing inherently wrong with those things, they should be limited to a small percentage of daily life. Russian society shouldn't live like people do here in the USA. Also, Russians shouldn't lose that "toughness, surviving, and making the most use of what is on hand" way that they are known for. It's virtue. Don't trade it for western "luxury".
@WoozyPolarBearАй бұрын
I always believed that in America, convenience is synonymous with laziness. Did you know that in America, the younger generation gets about 25% of their meals delivered through apps from take out fast dinning restaurants, and that the prices for delivery are about twice the in restaurant price and triple to quadruple what it would cost to buy the food from the grocery store and prepare yourself. Pure laziness, and poor financial behaviours.

Из федералов есть "Метро", Магнит, Перекрёсток, ВкусВилл, из не продовольственных - Лемана Про (бывший Леруа Мерлен) - в общем, есть что обозреть. Wow Russell, you took a long journey for this video. Good for you. Eggs in Canada are always refrigerated and come in packages of 12 or 18. They are about $4 to $7 a dozen. I have mentioned previously that our prices are outrageous since the pandemic. We don't have the large variety of chocolate like seen in your video and the loose single candies, which look amazing lol, aren't really seen here as well. The majority of our soft drinks are not refrigerated but rather on the shelves in the aisle. Only recently have grocery stores started selling liquor and wine. We used to have to buy liquor in a separate store that sold only that. We have self serve coffee in some supermarkets. I find it very interesting in all the varieties of ketchup in Russia. We have basically 2 or 3 varieties and that's it. Someone in another video mentioned that salaries are much lower in Russia than they are in Canada. What is the average salary in Russia? I have no idea. In Canada, the average salary is about $30,000 give or take. Thanks for the video Russell. Well done!

The salary is very different from region to region. As a resident of Moscow, I earn $1,000 a month, but this is considered a modest salary for Moscow. In the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, the average salary of the working class is about $ 600. And now I'm in the city of Murom and I've seen job offers for a bartender for $300 a month. This is not enough, but it should be borne in mind that most families in Russia have at least one apartment in their ownership, so many do not have to pay half their salary for rent (this does not apply to Moscow, where a lot of people rent housing coming from other regions). Sorry for my English, the translation was done by an AI translator.

Keeping staple food items at a low cost is a much better system than handing out money for people to use on food as the USA does. The people on government food aid end up eating junk or expensive stuff. I worked at Walmart in the USA, and the people on food aid took away large amounts of the most expensive food as they had other people paying for it through taxes, so they didn't care. The other problem is they trade food aid for cash or drugs.
