@@joshanonlineI didn’t ‘flee’ anything; i’m 68 and moved to Florida to be near the only family I have left. In the three years and two months I have been here I have put just over 5000 miles on my car so I don’t believe I am contributing to your traffic problem either. I haven’t had an accident in over 20 years and your traffic was already shit when I arrived in 2021, bad enough that my insurance carrier of almost 40 years would not continue my auto coverage anywhere in this state. As for your rental market, don’t blame me; I bought a 40 year old two bedroom two bath house over an hour away from Tampa. I am not rich and it’s definitely not a luxury property. Your comments seem to be a handful of unchecked assumptions that happen to be, in my case, completely wrong.

Technically, it’s a sandbar. I lived there for over 25 years and the best decision I ever made was to move. The cost of living is ridiculous. The wages are laughable. There are no workers rights to speak of and every year right before tourist season, the prices get jacked up. When people ask why I moved away from this paradise, I always respond “because I did not want to wind up drowning in the dark.” Hurricanes belong in Florida, not people.

I left Florida last month, the amount of stress I had while living there dissipated. Cost of living bled me dry. I worked my ass off and my bank account made it to E before every check(no matter how strategic I was with budgeting). And I got tired of the people there, they were disrespectful to the point where I was pulling weapons to defend myself(and was almost shot twice). People there are unapologetically hostile, it made me cynical towards society and I couldn’t see myself being around it for another decade. I took my dog and relocated to PR, jobs may not pay well and heat will still be a pain, but I have a house that’s paid for and I only gotta concern myself with utility bills. Compared to the financial stress I dealt with in FL, that’s nothing. I lived in Florida for 26 years, my whole life practically, and it gets worse with each passing year, I started out loving it, and with time grew to despise it.

Florida is ideal only if you are rich and okay living inside of a gated community. Otherwise, all the things that Texas complains about (immigrants, drug traffickers, crime, etc.) apply equally if not more so. But you also have issues like I-95 being a daily parking lot and poor urban planning and gated communities making side streets into a maze. Also, many condos have become a net-loss for their owners because the wet climate and strong storms have seen many, especially high-rises, suffering structural decay that is prohibitively expensive to repair. You may have bought a beach-facing high-rise condo 20-30 years ago, only to find that selling it is a problem because the building overall is considered too risky.

I lived in Palm Beach Gardens for three years. There were many aspects of Florida life I appreciated, especially the beautiful beaches, which I made sure to visit frequently, our condo community's lovely pool surrounded by palm trees, the tropical landscaping in many places, my screened-in balcony, which caught the southern breezes, and more. But when I took a job in Indiana, it was as if a weight had fallen off me--historic homes with front porches, "real" trees that changed color in the fall, a much lower cost of living, more relaxed people and a less self-selected, more naturally composed population, no threat of hurricanes, cool weather in fall, winter and early spring, traditional open neighborhoods rather than just gated communities everywhere, everything less sterile, more homey.... Now I live in Europe, but if I were to move back to the US, I'd gladly return to Indiana--and not Florida....

Now it’s was cut in half!!!! Drive by your insurance company and see all the nice new cars they are all driving!!!! My grandson’s Mom had damage 2 years ago for over $65,000. But the insurance would only cut her a check for only $30,000, she had to get a second mortgage to fix her home and it was all of maybe 5 years old!!!!

Not mentioned are the costs of goods and services that are not needed in many other areas. before moving to FL, we never had to have an annual termite control policy, power pressure washing to remove mold and mildew as well as rust stains from the driveway and sidewalks, insect control both inside and outside our home, etc. The automobile and home insurance are much higher than most other areas. The majority of our neighbors have pools, so that's another expense that needs to be maintained that thankfully we don't have.

Left South Florida two years ago to live north more and out of state (not disclosing location). My reasons for leaving South Florida were the high cost of living, low wages at work places, and lack of overall opportunity of employment in general; it’s almost as if you have to work for self to make it worth the while in the times not just in South Florida but most places. Other negative factors were the already over crowding of the roadways and beaches, extreme hot weather and humidity literally year around leading to out of control electric bills due to having to run the ac virtually year around, out of control insects and invasive wild life causing physical damage to people and property, super aggressive thunderstorms especially during the hotter months of Summer that damage or destroy electronics along with constant power outages, not to mention it raining at around 2-4pm everyday in the Summer and Fall months, no seasons; because many people are over worked and under paid many people are walking around super stressed projecting their negative energy and attitudes on one another, people don’t have the the extra time energy and resources to enjoy things like the beach, entertainment, night life, restaurants, and other tourist attractions like Orlando, Disney, Epcot, Universal Studios etc…Crime is prevalent and prone in most communities with even the most affluent communities suffering parking lot robberies, cars being robbed, homes being robbed; there is lots of cultural clashing and segregation creating language barriers and people not able to agree on how to properly do things based on their culture and where they come from, irrigation issues are threatening as many areas flood and flood insurance is mandatory in most places, property insurance, rent, and mortgage rates are sky high along with homes costing an astronomical amount for places that were built over half a century ago or more, these places need to be completely demoed and rebuilt as they are a nightmare with having structural issues, electrical, plumbing, roof issues etc. Water restrictions can make it difficult to keep vehicles and other things clean along with grass in yards turning brown for majority of the year due to the heat and the need for lots of water to stay green. The drug and alcohol problems are out of control cause many people are unhappy, and synthetic heroine overdoses and heroine overdoses run rampant in even the most affluent communities among teens and young adults; you think your kids are living in a good area and going to a good school to then find out them and their friends are all on drugs and heavy stuff like oxycodone and heroine. Family life gets torn apart when finances are a mess and people are struggling to get by and have the essentials. Seeing million and billionaire lifestyles on the regular works on many peoples minds psychologically making them desire and want more than they could ever afford and need and force them to try and have it cause if they don’t, they feel as if they don’t fit in and are not good enough. Schools are scammy, the medical system is scammy, the legal system is very scammy, and people in general are scammy with their being a lot of child abductions and human trafficking; it lives up to the saying a sunshine state with shady people. Politics are a mess with people protesting all over the place and being aggressive towards one another over which party is the best. There are a large population of elderly who are still driving recklessly or at snail speeds due to vision and hearing impairments along with many other health issues that go unseen by the dmv, and live in poverty; they thought they would retire in paradise only to have their money run out and end up in a living hell. Many of the youth in Florida are not well disciplined and structured because of having over worked parents and lack of parental guidance and leadership while being raised, the youth in South Florida also suffer terrible distractions because of the over abundant sex, money, drugs, and violence distractions with not enough extracurricular things available and affordable to do; idle hands are the devils playground. The list could continue to go on but I’ll stop here. Definitely consider your current and future finances before moving to South Florida and make sure you have employment in place prior to moving because there is a good chance you will get there and your money will run out. Good luck if you do choose to move to South Florida and keep in mind most anywhere can be paradise if you have a large abundance of money. 🌴☀️💯✨

What i have noticed too that is not talked about enough is the hidden prejudice towards Americans, especially blacks from the Hispanics. I've seen it with my own eyes and it didn't take long. Florida is in a decline, it's not the 80s or 90s anymore. As you said, people need to wake up and consider their financial future before coming here. The quality of housing is ridiculously bad. @@geoffhampton9155 Racial tension in America in general is at an all time high, I have nothing to really discuss on the topic because it's a one way ticket to a dead end in conversation. Yes, the financial situation is of the absolute most importance when considering living in Florida because ones mental and physical health will tank if their finances fail. Yes, housing quality is terrible and only getting worse, I have friends in construction and they tell me the details of all the horror stories; where they may want to build with integrity and quality it just isn't possible because of the politics and numbers game in their industry. You can get much better housing for the money in the mid-west, just keep in mind that the mid-west is not Florida, regarding beaches, annual Summer weather, etc. If you prefer hotter weather, Florida is definitely the place to be; you could also consider being out in the desert in a place like Arizona as well, lol. Writing from the Tampa Area, Pinellas County. You have to do a LOT of research before moving to Florida. If you’re moving to a coastal area, just skip every place in flood zones 1-3. Stay away from high rise condominiums, as the HOA costs are stratospheric (you basically pay your share to support, or rebuild, a high-rise building.) Every decent neighborhood will have HOAs, but you need to know what the HOA is responsible for before buying in. Apartments are plentiful, but not necessarily conducive to good living. Florida is very cosmopolitan and you may have neighbors calling their families in the middle of the night due to time zone differences. Florida politics are very weird. The trifecta in the Florida state government has taken a serious track toward bigotry and hyper-religiosity. If coastal living is your thing, you can find a nice townhouse in the price range of $350-450K within a ten to fifteen minutes drive to the nearest beach. Our townhome is zone D, 32’ above sea level, but is still only a short drive to the coast. Study the real estate values two years ago to now, but remember, while you’re deliberating “should we or shouldn’t we?” someone else is making an offer on the same place you’re “thinking about”.
