A lot of people use weight distribution hitches but do they really work? In this episode, I spend the morning at our local CAT Scales weighing our Lance Travel Trailer and our Chevrolet 2500HD in various configurations to find out just what is happening when we use our Anderson Weight Distribution system.

Great video, Patrick, and one of the easiest-to-follow explanations how weight distribution works I've ever seen. I was considering moving from the Fastway E2 WD hitch to the Anderson just to get rid of the heavy, sometimes noisy bars, but had read and heard that although they are outstanding at preventing and controlling sway, their weight-distribution capabilities aren't as good as a traditional "bar" system. I reached out to Anderson with all of the pertinent figures and information from my CAT scale measurements asking whether their hitch could get the job done (I'm transferring about 150 pounds to the front axle with the E2), and their reply was: "Our system is more so a load leveling system. You may get some weight distribution, but not as much as a traditional trunnion bar style system.." I read between the lines and took that to mean it wasn't a good choice for our 1/2 ton Silverado and Lance 2285. It does bring up an oft-misunderstood point about WD hitches though, as many people think the only reason to use one is to take weight off the rear axle (to prevent sagging or mitigate tongue weight that would exceed either payload capacity or rear GAWR). That's only half of the equation. It is equally important to add weight back to the front axle to make sure the front tires have sufficient contact with the road for safe steering and braking.

Thank you Jim for sharing your story. I think it will be very helpful to others considering the Anderson.

A WDH is a torque hitch. Fact: no torsion bars, means no torque, means no "wdh". If you need more torque than the Andersen can provide, you need a larger truck. Play safe: the life you save could be your own.

This was well done and good info. Some other channels say there is little to no WD with the Anderson, only sway control. You proved it does distribute weight appropriately. I wonder what happened to your 800 lb. tongue weight with WD? They recommend at least 10% of trailer weight, so 500 lb. In your case. For me, ideally, I would like less tongue weight and more distribution to the trailer and truck. But my Airstream weighs 6500 fully loaded, so I want a hitch that gives me 650-750 lbs. tongue weight. My equalizer is heavy, noisy, and dirty with lubrication. But it does distribute and there is no sway. The Weighsafe with adjustable tongue weight (built in guage/scale) might be better for my application. Thanks again!

I have a question. First I do have an Anderson hitch and love it. I just started carrying 2 e bikes Lets call it 160# total with carrier. I found my trailer became unstable, so I started carrying cases of water in the front cargo hold to offset the added weight in the back. So the question is could I have just operated without the weight distribution hitch to prevent the weight from moving to the trailer. I guess the question is where the actual weight the is moved back Is actually being applied. It’s a pretty big issue. I’m even thinking of adding metal plate to the tongue. Any suggestions?
@TravelswithDelaney
@TravelswithDelaney Жыл бұрын
There are so many factors that you would want to be looking at. The length of the trailer, what is your tongue weight (sounds like it might be light), etc. Where is your fresh water tank on your RV? Would having fresh water in the tank help bring weight to the front of the trailer?

An example of the EFFECTS of WDH. WDH is bullshit. A WDH cannot "distribute" weight. To distribute, the physical footprint must change: e.g. a 3x4 array of blocks must be altered to say a 2x6 array. What a WDH does is apply torsion to the frame of truck and trailer. Torsion means torque, which is a force. That force must go somewhere: Newton's law. It goes into the frame of your truck. The force is not static: it will multiply as you gain speed and as you traverse potholes and bumps. The stress on frames can be enormous: sufficient to crack them. uh, ask me how I know. The reason for the apparent "shifting" of weights is the angle of sag; the angle of deflection. ANYTHING that reduces the angle will cause weight to be shifted to the other axles: simple laws of levers. A better means is to use air bags. In my day, levers were taught in grade 8. The fact hundreds of thousands of American RV-ers cannot understand grade 8 science is proof how drugged-up and dumbed-down is the nation.
