Today we upgrade my first custom keyboard to have better acoustics and feel with the implementation of o rings and neoprene rubber. It was a pretty simple project, and I'd say worth the return. The sound of a tray mounted keeb cannot compare to one that is suspended over the standoffs by silicone.
**DISCLAIMER: Thanks to some comments, I realized I didn't technically gasket mount the PCB. By screwing in the two middle screws (which I did), the purpose of a gasket mount was somewhat defeated. I've added quote marks around "gasket" in the title to reflect this, so the video's not clickbait. Thank you to those who pointed this out. Regardless, I did feel a slight difference in typing as the mod is in the video, and it does sound different (softer, brighter) than before, which I enjoy.

I tried this mod too and it felt really nice to type on, but it totally gave me the opposite type of sound I wanted :) It reallllly brought out the metallic pingy-ness of the Tofu. Oddly, I was able to get the deeper sound profile I wanted by LOOSENING the mounting screws. Sure my PCB is slightly wobbly, but dang does it sound nice. I'm wondering if the O-ring mod will make an acrylic Tofu case sound killer?

I had a lot of success with this mod without having to place the o rings with tweezers. I got some 4mm m2 screws which are perfect for this. Just place the o ring right onto the screw, into the PCB, and add another o ring to the other side. Much less headache, same concept.

Thank you very much!! I am diving deeper and deeper every day. Trust me. My biggest gripe about the keyboard industry is the wait between group buys, which usually have the most premium products (that will be) available, and the actual shipment date of said products. Hey so regarding the o ring mod; it’s more for exaggerating plate noise characteristics vs case noise and increasing consistency of the sound, mostly because you’re isolating the plate from the case. The feel will change a bit? But not as much. Typically changing the mounting style and plate of the board will be the biggest things you can do to change keyboard feel, but of course that’s pretty hard to do with tofu. But damn your videos are really good, once again! Glad to see you working on custom keeb content, and I look forward to what comes next!
@Sebatech
@Sebatech 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the tip Anzel. I actually realized that I did the O-Ring mod in a way such that I didn't actually gasket mount the PCB; I screwed in the two middle standoffs, so there is no gasket-esque suspension. I've added quotes to "gasket" in the title to reflect this... And thanks for the compliment, always means a lot :). I'm working to do some product reviews in the near future (likely in the coming uploads), so look out for those

One tip for O-Ring tray mounts that i don't see people doing is simply making the pcb rest on top of the o-rings, without any screws. To do this, you'll need to stack 2 o rings on top of the 4 mounting points(i use a tiny amount of blu tac to keep the orings in place), and slide the pcb into the case. But because we're not using any screws, to keep the PCB in place you'll have to friction fit the pcb into the case with tape/bandaids. I find it to be a slight improvement over the typical screwed in tray-oring mount in terms of bounce and flex.
@Sebatech
@Sebatech 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. Might try that with command strips for the friction fitting...

I believe in order to get the consistency you're looking for you have to do what Keybored said in his video and only use the 4 standoffs in the outside corners and not the middle ones. This will allow the board to flex much more and will make the typing feel and consistency better. The amount of foam/leather/rubber you have in the bottom also might take away from how much the board can flex, so maybe a lighter foam and less of it would improve the flex a little too. Great job though, I love to see that you're responding to feedback
@Sebatech

Instead of using that rubber foam, try casting silicone into your case. You will need a level to get it perfect though, since the PCB is held at an angle. For the "o-ring" mod, try putting the o-rings on the actual case stand-offs. I put about 3x 2.5mm diameter o-rings on the stands, since when you screw the PCB back in, if you put just 1x o-ring, it will be squished and pushed around the stand-offs. Watch, disassemble your board after screwing it in like this and I bet one or more of your o-rings is now wrapped around one of your stand-offs, causing that inconsistency you mentioned. When you put 3 or more o-rings, they all compress against each other and prevent the PCB from touching the stand-offs again since their combined height is slightly more than the stand-offs. For the spacebars, you can do something similar and o-ring the stem holes where it connects to your switch and stabilizers. I typically o-ring all my tray mount spacebars and it makes them sound like I am using a silent switch.
@Sebatech
@Sebatech 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed description! I'll look into doing all of this. Would I not need a longer M.2-5 screw to mound the PCB with the added height of the o-rings stacked?
@johnyjoe2k
@johnyjoe2k 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sebatech No because the extra height is only about 1-2mm. Very small. It depends on how thick your o-rings are. The 3 I mentioned was what worked for me, but then again mine are slightly different from yours. Just use enough so that the very top most o-ring is slightly higher than the stand offs.

To be honest, I couldn't make any totally sound suggestions without testing the products myself. Gasket mounted cases tend to have more consistent presses, from what I've heard/read/watched. My keyboard is hot swappable, meaning I don't have to solder. PCBs aren't necessarily good or bad, but there are ones that are hot swap and ones that aren't. Is my keyboard weird, because the usb c port is on the pcb and the mounting points would pass through the pcb. So i think if i tried the o ring mount, the usb c port wouldnt be meeting the hole on the case anymore.

Is the keyboard itself (plate and pcb) raised more because of the silicone orings? Does this mean more wrist strain? I'm just curious because I'm genuinely thinking of doing this with my tofu 60
@Sebatech
@Sebatech 3 жыл бұрын
It's not enough of a height difference to increase wrist strain. I suggest looking into a wrist rest if you're worries about wrist strain, since the Tofus are pretty tall
@dabeasthalofan6276
@dabeasthalofan6276 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sebatech thanks for your input. I did recently put decently thick foam under my pcb last month. The thing was however is that it increased the height of my pcb inside the tofu, making it more wrist straining. Idk, I don’t like wrist rests, and I’m comfortable with the tofu height. I guess I’ll just stick with thinner neoprene

The inconsistency is from inconsistent spacing using the screws to mount the PCB. It may sound similar, but I can't see how this method would give the same feeling as a gasket mount. I'm actually wondering if you removed the O-Rings would sound the same because of the neoprene and cause the keys to be more consistent without losing the sound mod.
@Sebatech
@Sebatech 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I doubt it makes as big a difference as a true gasket, but I was referring to the concept of sandwiching the PCB between silicone, which happens here

umm. you were doing it kinda wrong. You are meant to only put the screws and o-rings on the outer 2 standoffs... The PCB and plate are meant to hover over the middle standoffs. That is why it didn't work for you. I have done the o-ring mod and it worked 100%

@@Sebatech Those should sound deeper/thoccier, feel a little softer, and maybe poppier. I dislike brass plates as they make many boards sound very high pitched. I hate high pitched sounds as it feels like they resonate with the back of my head, and it feels weird. I think it’s a hearing problem or something.
