Hey JD, I soak all my old pennies in olive oil. It will not harm the coin but it will eventually loosen up the crud on that IH. It will take some time though. I recently took an old IH out of oil that I had packed away 12 years ago. The coin is gorgeous now. When I packed it in oil back in 2005, you could barely make it out as an IH. I am sure it won't take you 12 years either. I never intended to keep my IH packed in oil that long, I just kind of forgot about it till now. My IH turned out to be an 1864.

I've had Indians that looked like they had concrete on them too. It's usually calcium deposits they look and feel just like cement. You can put them in CLR (calcium, lime, rust remover) It will dissolve the deposits right off without hurting the coin as long as you don't leave it in too long. Good luck In the New Year

JD: try Muriatic acid diluted with 50% water to remove cement from coins. By deluting it, no coin metal should be removed, but try an edge first as a trial. Basicly, muriatic acid is hydrocloric acid so be careful and use rubber gloves and goggles.

I am not a detector yet but enjoyed watching your hunts, The aluminum piece looks like the wonder woman crown or headpiece my daughter had 40 years ago, If my crusty brain remembers correctly it was definitely more rounded at 1 time as you can tell where each 1 of the areas where it looks sort of creased happened when it flattened out, as for the concrete on stuff I am not sure if this helps you or not, but I have been in the construction business for 45 years and when we pull our stakes and forms we soak any of them that come out crusty in diesel or straight kerosene and after a few days the concrete wipes right off, I am not sure if that’s good or bad for your patina and such but I would think knowing the date would be as important Just my thoughts Keep on diggin!

Those are not incidental marks... if you look at a hand tooled leather belt (western - or google Tandy Leather and check out some if the patterns on their site you will see that it is definitely something that was created. Even though this is aluminum and the paterns I am familiar with are for leather - the process for carving or tooling the two would be similar...

Lead seals were often used by railroads to seal a train car with cargo to symbolize that the cargo within had not been tampered with during train shipment. Lead seals were also used to ID products' origin and to collect funds for shipped goods from other countries.

Nice hunt JD. Few things....i always get the "5" play coin too...got one yesterday the 1st of 2017. The last 3 or 4 hunts i had...those darn 1944-P and 1944-D lincoln cents always pop up...two a day even! Please don't despair on the Indian head cent with concrete on it...I've had much worse to clean up...soak it in olive oil overnight, use a brass brush with lots of oil-penetrating oil even and widdle away that concrete. Concrete DOES NOT adhere to surface copper too hard...in 1 to 5 minutes of brushing you can get a date off it, i promise you....hope it's a 1877.

JD..coolest thing.....i just figured out what those thin aluminum "half-Moon with notch in them" or broke in half at the notch things we always find. I've been finding them for 6 years and thought they were just aluminum bits of trash...until yesterday...i found an entire tray of them...they are from those old aluminum ice trays...those half moon aluminum pieces are the ice separation pieces. It was the coolest thing....figuring out what all those aluminum pieces were....from demo'ed house-sites. Makes complete sense now, when people move out they NEVER take the ice cube trays!!!...they end up bulldozed in the ground.

Most of the deep stuff I dig up was dropped a long time ago. They sink naturally as time goes on. Generally the less dense the soil the deeper the targets sink. Being in Tennessee I hunt in a lot of dense clay, so sometimes I can find 100 year old coins that are only an inch deep.

That is one part of this hobby that is just amazing... How some 2,3, even 400 year old coins can be just an inch or two below the grass... And here in Sweden you don't have to dig that deep down to get to where the surface was during the ice age (if the soil has not been plowed or used in another way)
