Retrievable redirects have a time and a place while climbing; they may not be used on a daily basis, but knowing how to pull one off effectively and with minimal gear, can save the day!

One of my favorites! It is super good enough. I was hesitant when I first started trying it, but after some tests I trust it. Once the half hitches are loaded, it can’t be pulled out by the tail.

A major saftey consideration for this redirect is that if the two points of the redirect are in motion either from wind or movement forces generated by heavy rigging it can trip the redirect when unweighted. More tail can be used when creating the redirect to help safeguard against this. Another method for retrival of this redirect when climbing on a knot blocked cambium saver style anchor is to (whilst lanyarded in) pull down on the retrieval side of the climbing system to trip the redirect. This can also be done remotely by a groundsman. This redirect can also be difficult to trip if friction is introduced between the two points used. By the line rubbing past or around other branches. When the bight of rope reaches the half hitches if there is too much friction the bight won't pull through the half hitches. Two half hitches separated by six inches has always been how I have applied this redirect. Not sure of any benefits of using more half hitches, but possibly using more half hitches could cause issues with retrieval. Something to look into. It's a hazardous redirect to get right every time. (mainly because of encountering issues with tripping it where the bight dosent pull through but jams up against the half hitches. This creates a dangerous scenario where the redirect is neither tripped nor safe to continue climbing on) Definitely apply the low and slow approach for learning this one.

Very well said! We showed it with more to make the system redundant and as far as retrieval goes, it does create the need for a harder pull upon retrieval but still very possible with the five half hitches. Pulling it from the ground while working from a Golden Retrieval had not crossed my mind, but I love that; super dope!!! Climb Safe

I was in that position just a few days ago, pruning an Oak, ten feet from redirect, 30 feet from ground, I had four half hitches and was struggling to get them to trip, and knew that I couldn’t climb back up safely, but I ended up using my foot ascender to finally trip redirect, I will most certainly try two @ 6” apart! Low and Slow, thanks for your input

Hi, can I ask you where one can find the little wood you use between the wrench and the lanyard?

That’s a bunch of piled up half hitches. USE 2 half hitches!! For retrieval, the important thing to remember is to “load your flip line first”. You will NOT retrieve your cord if it is tensioned. Remove load from line before attempting. Separate those half hitches with 4 inches!! You’re GOLDEN, GET SOME🫵🏻😎🔥💪
